Spoiler gotta be one of the blue wizards that are MIA in the 3rd age. Though I think it says in the Silmarillion they are in the east so maybe it isn’t them
again, Amazon is not licensed to use the Silmarillion so don't read a wiki and try to use those facts to make sense of the show. the Istari didn't come to ME until the Third Age because the Valar were getting a bit nervous for everyone because they could see Sauron consolidating power again. now, having said that, what I'm about to say next probably isn't entirely true but just to give you an idea, this show, about making the Rings of Power, would canonically be about 5,000 years before the One Ring was destroyed. the Istari shouldn't be in play for a solid 3,000 or so years. however, as I said before, I do think this is a Maiar and likely an Istari. and it's not about that they can't use "Hobbits", it's that it would be a poor descriptor and also confusing to those who didn't read the books well. it's like calling every snake a snake like yea, you're technically correct but it sounds smarter to say rattlesnake or pit viper or cobra. all Harfoots are Hobbits, not all Hobbits are Harfoots. this show isn't canon. the showrunners are not steeped in knowledge of Tolkien, you can generally assume stuff like that to be a happy coincidence.
I'm amused nobody here has said Saruman, which I think has a good shot of being the one for a few reasons. Saruman was flawed as a Maiar but before he was corrupted he was a strong warrior for Eru Iluvatar. when they convened the council to decide who amongst the Maiar should travel to ME to help everyone, not only was Saruman the first to volunteer but Gandalf and Radagast did not want to go, which caused tension between them and Saruman. Saruman would make for a better story here because he later (far later) seeks to emulate Sauron's rings for himself and in general has issues with jealousy and favoritism shown towards the other Istari, in particular Gandalf, which was why he was ultimately corrupted by Sauron. he would be a power for good in this series but if he was written well you could really show some chinks in his armor and sort of lead people to see how he ended up on the wrong side by the time the War of the Rings came.
Is a harfoot a hobbit? Sort of. Harfoots are ancestors to the hobbits you know from the films, like Frodo, Samwise, Merry and Pippin. There are in fact three ancestral breeds of hobbits: harfoots, stoors, and falllohides. And while they all have differentiating features – fallohides never grew beards, for example – we only need to concern ourselves with harfoots for the time being. According to the source material, hobbits didn't get up to much in this age of Middle-earth. The harfoots are a neat loophole for the show’s creators; they provide a more relatable way into the story than those snooty elves, and they could have done interesting things in this show’s timeline. The showrunners have been clear about going off-script, and there are brand-new characters in this show. In fact, this entire series is an inventive navigation of IP and licensing rights, and the harfoots are just one example of that.
My money is on Saruman. I could see them pulling the fan service card and making him Gandolf but Saruman just makes sense. I also saw a brief little Treebeard cameo, that was cool.
Finally finished. My thoughts on the meteor man match what most think Spoiler most likely an istari, I think Saruman would make the most sense. Long shot and probably wrong because of the hair color but isn’t this about the time the Valar sent Glorfindel back?
Got a real “I’ll have no pointy ear out smashing me” vibe from that endurance challenge. Galadriel really matured in the next 3-5000 years. But of a hothead rn, far more divine and above every one. Millennia will do that to ya
Wouldn’t Sauron still be on ME and just hiding and building his army in Mordor? I’ve never dove deep into Tolkien lore before at all
Spoiler: Second Age Spoilers In short, he builds an army in Mordor, and may or may not have been defeated by the Numenorans (Aragon’s ancestors) on purpose and then been captured, brought back to Numenor (Tolkein’s Atlantis) and eventually caused the destruction of Numenor, which eventually leads to the Last Alliance we see at the beginning of LOTR
Spoiler: Galadriel Spoilers She was heavily involved in the Rebellion of the Noldor, which led to the genocide of a whole group of elves and the near destruction of another group, which (depending on which Tolkien letter your reading) led to her being personally banned from ever returning to Valinor. Denying the Ring from Frodo showed the Valar she’d matured from her arrogance/ambition and they let her come back.
I don’t know if I’d consider the Noldor the good guys; not as bad as Melkor of course but Feonor and his whole family were quite the collection of bastards.
Spoiler yeah, for sure. Family ran deep so being pissed about Finrod makes sense. More of a comment about the temperament of actresses.
That’s what Galadriel was doing with her expedition, she can feel his presence still and that’s why she wanted to keep pushing north into the darkness to hunt him. Maybe you misread because I think the mystery guy is Saruman, the white elf that turns evil during the LotR trilogy. I think he’s been sent to help hunt for Sauron.
I think it was more apprehensive following wanting an adventure. She wasn’t in on the kinslaying that I recall, though I haven’t read the Silmarillion in a minute.
She was on Feonor’s side and was a leader in the rebellion, but didn’t take part in the Kinslaying and was part of the group Feonor abandoned
I just realized who Galadriel was from Lotr. That’s how little I know and I remember from the books. I think it’s Saruman as well and went down a google hole reading about them. Always thought him and Gandalf and them were just another human that were sorcerers
important to note that this is not book Galadriel in any way, shape, or form. her great-grandfather was one of the Three Fathers. the light of the two trees shone on her face (this is a big fucking deal for elves), something that arguably no other elf on ME can say. she's a thousand years older than Gil-galad and Elrond is like a child to her. she is the most powerful elf on ME by a country mile and this is before she's granted Nenya, one of the Rings of Power. she's not a petulant, impulsive woman, she is a wise and badass motherfucker. the interactions alone with Elrond and Gil-galad are just...wrong in nearly every sense. Peter Jackson did Galadriel justice in the films. even though the scene at Dol Goldur where she banishes Sauron and The Nine with the Light of Eärendil isn't in The Hobbit, it's very realistic. the annoying thing is I actually like the actress, I think she's doing well with the script but they've written her horribly, she's so much more of a badass in the books and she's a badass for badass sake, there's little depth to it.
Went back and re-watched and one of the statues in the dead elves garden is definitely Luthien, she's got a hound in her arms. Cool detail.
The TV spot during the game highlighted a black horse running. From Shadowfax to Felarof were any of the Mearas black or were they all white?
Shadowfax was gray. It might not even be a Mearas, they really weren't talked about until TA anyway but having said that, the showrunners have outright said they take liberties with the uncertainties Tolkien left in his writings during this time period. There's really no reason a Mearas couldn't be whatever color they wanted.
First black elves, then black hobbits, now black Mearas? When will the Amazon Woke Agenda end? /Twitter Edge Lord Comments
I seem to remember the three Hobbit tribes were supposed to vaguely represent the Anglos, Saxons, and Jutes with their western migration to the Shire, which is roughly where England would be in Middle Earth
Yeah, Sir Phobos has been crushing this thread. He’s been reminding me of a lot of things I’d had forgotten. Definitely makes the show more enjoyable.
Timeline is definitely fucked up, I thought maybe they would move forward centuries at some point, but Celebrimbor died like 1500 years before Isildur was born. At this point the war should have already started and the rings already been given to those Sauron corrupted. Unless they’re just gonna say Men lived 1000 years in the second age or condense all of it.
I kinda hope they do a switcheroo and make the audience believe that the mystery meteor man is Gandalf and make people like him etc, and then it ends up being Saruman. Not sure how they'd do it or if it's possible but the idea of making everyone like a character that ends up being "the bad guy" in films they know well would be interesting.
Episode 3 is good. I think this is going to end up being a great show I still have no idea where these places are and who these people are besides the elves
If you’ve watched the LOTR trilogy you’ve met/heard of Elendil and Isildur before, dad and son of the sea guard in Numenor
What if someone has watched them multiple times but doesn’t realize the significance? Asking hypothetically of course
Lol I’ve seen the movies so many times but didn’t know their names. I googled and now realize who they are clip above and also
Ok this is all making sense and I can also place the tree on the island now as well. Knew it looked familiar
So then Mordor doesn’t exist yet? It will be where the elven guard tower was and where the tunnels are ?
Ok upon all of these connections now being made, I am pretty confident Spoiler the guy from the south lands (which I now know is future Mordor) is Sauron
