android development has been slow the 1st part of the year. should have some good phones by late summer, with app development (NFC included) following. app development for tablets is still rather lean.

wonder how busy dev's have been having to change shit up for google's privacy policy. maybe not app dev's as much as android OS stuff. got a small update pushed to my phone that had my hopes up it was ice cream sammich then realized it was some small shit.

Very little. Google's new privacy policy really just consolidated all their independent privacy policies. I'd say the lag in software development from the OEM's has to do with the switch from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. ICS is a vast departure from Gingerbread, unlike the Froyo to Gingerbread update which was minor in comparison.

What are you guys using for a tether app? I downloaded that Wireless Tether apk a while back and it used to work slick on my Incredible but it doesn't work at all on my Nexus. Tried the Open Garden tether and it gave a couple errors in the log and wouldn't allow me to tether. Ended up going with the Clockworkmod usb tether on a trial version. I'm in the airport for another 6 hours so I have time to mess around with it.

i use EasyTether. it's a usb tether but it's free, although the free version doesn't allow secure site connections

I've been spoiled so I'm looking for a root version wifi tether. Seems like if I could get something on my Incredible, I should be able to find something like that for the Nexus.

Wireless tether for root users. Use it everyday. The most current version works perfectly on the GNex (3.1 beta 11).

    :respek:

I will try it out. I had one of the previous versions and it was shit.

If I don't have luck with this, I might pay for the premium usb app from clockwork mod. Seems to be working pretty slick even though I have to be plugged in.

Log shows everything is a success, but it is still slow as hell and times out all the time. Back to using the usb I guess. Not sure why I'm having so many troubles with that app on this phone. Possibly a rom/kernel conflict?

Not sure, seems like others are having the same problem: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1257&q=nexus slow

The devs are really active so I would hope a new version comes out soon.

for USB tether I used EasyTether by polytech or something like that
for Wifi tether I use Wifi Tether (one of the newer builds) from Google.

most exciting phone so far from MWC is HTC ONE X. Im hoping Sprint gets it because otherwise, it would be like 1 year + between flagship HTC phones on sprint.

did anyone see battery info for eitehr of the new HTC ONE phones?

The HTC One X is going to be on AT&T. They are also stripping out the quad core so that the phone can have AT&T LTE. Don't know if that's due to compatibility or space, but regardless the phone will be dual core not quad core when it comes stateside.

Also, all the batteries on the HTC One phones are non-removable.

Got my first Android powered phone at the beginning of January and I'm EXTREMELY happy with my Motorola Droid RAZR thus far. If you decide to buy it though, make sure you get the newest version cause it's battery life is about twice as long though.

Not denying it. If he wants to build up hype for his future phone he should follow the rumors of the quad core release on his provider.

the headline is wrong, but will gladly accept that error in exchange for

    EVO Branded (>>better sales>>better support)
Dual Core Snapdragon S4 operating at 1.5-1.7 GHz w/ Adreno 225 or 320
w/ built in LTE for better battery
4.7" 720p screen - I assume smaller bezel will result in space saving improvements.
26 Usual GB of onboard storage
    NFC
    Bluetooth 4.0
    1 GB ram
    Beats Audio
    other little camera improvements.
    ~photo capture during video recording
~8MP camera optimized for low light/quick capture
    ~1080p Video Recording
~1.3 MP front camera w/ 720p video recording

    questions/concerns/missing features
    MHL-
    will screen be nice enough?
prob not good enough camera compared to iphone 4s
    only 1800 mAh battery
    not vanilla android
hopefully vastly improved speaker (hopefully multiple for video recording)

Yay. 1000 times over. Best screen on Verizon, incredibly thin, only device with stock 4.0 (yes, it is that good), guaranteed fast upgrade path. The only reason I would not get the Nexus is that you need a really really good camera on your phone or you need your phone to last 24+ hours on a single charge (in that case get the Razr Maxx).

How many months are you thinking until the Nexus gets dethroned for VZW? I am eligible for an upgrade and have the HTC DInc and am not sure if I should pull the trigger now or wait a month or so. If much longer than a month than I will just get the Nexus.

Also, does anybody have any ROM recommendations to get when I repurpose my DInc? I have not rooted yet but plan to when I get a new phone.

I'll be honest, I haven't been that happy with my Nexus. I'm hoping its performance improves with 4.04, but if it doesn't I might be selling the Nexus and jumping on the next big one that Verizon has coming out whatever that may be (assuming it gets good reviews).

tbh, im not sure it will change for a least 2-3 months. Friar would be more likely to know his device roadmap. CTIA is not until may, and MWC is for GSM carriers (AT&T/Tmobile) so its not surprising their isn't much buzz/press about new phones. I guess the iphone might come out this summer. even if a new VZW phone comes out, it will probably be in your best interest to have stock android. better support and faster updates, a good amount of dev activity.

no idea on ROMs for the dINC, glad it made it 2 years for you.

verizon released the list of phones that will get the official ICS update

We still don't know when Ice Cream Sandwich will makes its way to Verizon's existing smartphones and tablets, but now we know which lucky ones will be the first to make the switch.

Verizon hasn't actually shared a schedule, mind you, since there aren't any dates corresponding with the devices in question. However, if you own any of these smartphones or tablets, you can rest assured that your device will be among the first wave of upgrades; hopefully happening sooner rather than later.
Update, 12:03 p.m. PT: Post was updated to include Moto Droid Bionic.

What is the best data transfer sequence for upgrading from an unrooted phone to a phone I plan on rooting. Specifically, I will be upgrading from an unrooted HTC DInc to a Galaxy Nexus that will be rooted.

Does the order of transferring the data and rooting the Nexus matter?
    • Transfer data first to Nexus then root?
    • Root Nexus than transfer the data?
    • Does it not matter?
I realize unlocking the phone will wipe it, so I know if I transfer first then I will need to backup before unlocking. The benefit I see to transferring the data first is that the Verizon store people can do it very quickly for me when I get my upgrade. I plan using the backup feature of Wug's Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit to backup before rooting (Titanium once rooted of course) if I go with the data transfer first method.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
