Have you ever dipped into Graphic Novels? I just read a great one. Sentences the Life of MF Grimm. It isn't long and you can knock it out in one sitting. Very reflective and interesting.
Currently working on Outlier by Malcolm Gladwell, came out in Nov of last year so still relatively new. It has some pretty interesting accounts of what circumstances were in place for certain successful people to reach their fortunes.
Outliers is one of the most fascinating things I've ever read. I'm about halfway through and will then read the others
In Cold Blood is a good one for those who like non-fiction crime stuff. reading "Demon in the Freezer," true story about the remaining small pox samples contained in Atlanta and Russia, and Russia's attempts to create a new version of small pox for use in biological weapons. interesting stuff
Also, The Thing They Carried by Tim O'Brien. Semi true stories about Vietnam, some pretty fucked up stuff its really interesting and entertaining.
Lone Survivor is terrific and gives good insight into the culture we are dealing with in Afganistan. Im on Warren Buffet's Snowball Effect now after finishing Blind Side by Michael Lewis. All ML's writing is great as I finished Liar's Poker a few months ago.
I've pimped this a million times on the RB and it's been mentioned here, but if you have any interest in fantasy fiction or enjoyed any of the Lord of the Rings type of movies then ... You need to read 'The Song of Ice and Fire' series by George R.R. Martin. HBO greenlit the mini series and it's being filmed in northern Ireland shortly. Phenomenal 4 books in and is scheduled to go to 7, but Martin is getting old as fuck and he might die before it's done. He's almost two years behind on the 5th book's scheduled release date. ALSO, I know Dark Tower series was mentioned and that is really good also, but drags like any other King books. I actually have the symbol from the sides of Roland's original guns tatted on my upper arm/top of shoulder.
Here's the press release. Getting filmed in the 3rd quarter this year so I would imagine fall/winter of 2010. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i30b29365238b3652295a5a9e328518de
Just finished Lone Survivor. I think it just became my favorite book of all time. Just an incredible and moving story, one I will always remember. Damn fucking good.
1) Reading makes you a bad ass. 2) UA...Brave New World and The Giver are easily my two favorites of all time. 3) We would probably get along in real life.
I am reading "See no evil" by Robert Baer right now and its pretty damn interesting/scary(not in horror way but in a world sense)
Just finished Blink by Gladwell. Interesting topic but not as good as The Tipping Point IMO. Still I love his style of writing and it's very easy to read in a conversational kind of way. I have Outliers reserved at the library. About to start A Thousand Splendid Suns from the same guy who wrote The Kite Runner (great book strongly recommend). Also ordered 11 books off Barnes and Noble a few days ago. Many of which were recommended in this thread and that I'd never heard of. So props to the mainboard for that.
Definitely. I love that type of book. Did you ever read the other two parts of the trilogy by Lowis Lowry... Gathering Blue and Messenger? I still haven't but probably will after I read the book I'm working on now. Probably so.
I've tried to get into Martin's first book in the series, but his writing for some reason, really annoys the shit out of me. Also, the books seems to start out slow. Does it pick up steam as it goes or is it pretty much like that the whole time?
I dunno, I really liked the first one, it's definitely worth the time, I housed the first two books in the series in 2 weeks. Couldn't put them down. Then I got half way through the third, and I'm stuck, it's really good, I just don't have the drive to finish it.
Uhhhh yeah. Definitely go to a used book store and get some of his paperbacks for a couple bucks. They are entertaining. Great summer reads.
Lone Survivor was amazing. Now I'm working on the Giver trilogy. Just finished The Giver and now I'm working on Gathering Blue
The Pirates! books by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/s...index=books&field-author=Gideon Defoe">Gideon Defoe</a> are brilliant.
Told ya. Just picked up Guns, Germs, and Steel (about why civilizations around the world have failed) along with Seeds of Terror (about the poppy fields that are funding the taliban)
i got a few books i want to read this summer. any thoughts on them if you've read them? Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diaimond I Hope they Serve Beer in Hell
Read Max Brooks Guide to Surviving Zombies or whatever. Was an interesting book and makes you think. Now I am about to read World War Z.
didnt read the thread but dostoyevsky is my favorite author. Crime and Punishment could very well be the best book every written. All of his books are good though Tolstoy is damn good as well
