Just started this last week as I had never seen it before. On the last ep of S2 and I have to ask, when does it get good?
I’ve never looked up season rankings but my recollection is that it does and beyond my personal opinion there are several episodes in later seasons considered some of tvs best (I think). Once Tony’s mom dies it gets much better. She was fucking miserable.
Historical context comes into play here. S1 E5, “College” is when it became interesting at the time. Up until then the characters were still being developed. Most of the audience honestly felt the show was something of a comedy centered on a mafia family. Edie Falco was pretty much carrying the show. Then “College” came along. In it the dark side of the heretofore kind of loveable protagonist comes out in several scenes. He murders a guy in one. It was absolutely ground breaking in TV at the time for a protagonist that much of the audience could relate to as a family man dealing with a complicated world to become something else…yet still be the relatable guy. I doubt my info above helps. It might simply be a show that never appeals to you.
Just watched the ep where Richie tries to get Ally boy on board for a hit on Tony “he just couldn’t sell it”
Paulie is great this entire episode, but I love how uncomfortable Tony and Paulie get when they start beating the shit out of the kid and chase off the cops. Think we've all had this feeling visiting a foreign country at some point.
Yep David Chase was 100% laughing at all the wannabe Italians who do shit like Sunday dinners and cheer for Italy in the World Cup without a thought.
Whole game is apparently just beating people up until you get made but the cutscenes of the regulars are authentic Paulie talking about Tony to random guy "Just a mirage my friend. He aint here." Random guy looking for Tony "Don't be so fucking stupid. You see a mirage you don't hear it. Who doesn't know that." Paulie throws drink on guy "MADON" "Now go clean up, before I do something we both regret" Main character Joey "Hey Paulie you ever in the car business?" Paulie "I've been in every business my friend"
Tony just strangled Ralph to death in what's been the best moment in the series thus far. I had given up on Ralph getting got after Johnny called off the hit and was genuinely surprised when it happened. Now if only someone would get rid of his sister because Janet and every scene/storyline she's in is a waste of screen time. edit: also did Paulie getting arrested and held in Ohio happen off screen or am I just a fucking idiot that somehow missed it?
Ralph was one of those characters I hated the first time or two I watched it. After that I loved him. Janice is actually growing on me during this rewatch.
ok I thought I was losing my mind. I rewound that ep and didnt see anything about nor was it mentioned outside of him randomly making phone calls while in jail
I believe it happened because the actor was having some health issues, but I could be wrong. Either way, it happened off screen from what I can remember.
Yes, Paulie described the arrest to Johnny Sack on the phone. He was in the car with someone, they got stopped, and there was a gun in there from a murder.
Was a little late to get started because I decided to finish Bosch Legacy first. Currently trying to decide if it’ll be before or after S1E6 when he starts banging his therapist. Tony, Chris, and Tony’s mom are the standouts so far. Also the ducks. Looking forward to someone killing Brendan. The guy is a moron.
I couldn't be more jealous of you. At worst a top 3 show of all time considering its influence. I'm here for more takes as you go thru it.
I google basically every little quip Tony makes. One of the best scenes. “Fucking Matt Helm” pelican don’t watch Spoiler
It’s incredible how they show how they’re all not very smart but successful and they’re incredibly street smart and hyper violent to back it up
