glad i didn't hold my breath for this update or anything but seriously, finally found a download for it. decent so far
Damn my bad TJ. Was drunk and forgot I posted that. I like Raise My Glass, How Far I'll Go, and Far From You so far but the whole cd is good. Don't like it near as much as Naive but thats also one of my favorite albums so it's not a very fair comparison.
yeah it's tough to match up to Naive. i've liked what i heard so far. you're missing out on rush week this week, just got a report from the strip of a group of about 20 girls walkin into Outlaws. doesn't get much better than a bar playing the likes of Randy Rogers and many others and a bunch of sorority girls that swoon over someone that can dance
North Texas State Fair August 19 - Casey Donahew Band August 20 - Jack Ingram August 21 - Emilio Navaira August 22 - Pauline Reese August 23 - Dale Watson August 24 - Cody Canada & The Departed August 25 - Josh Abbott Band August 26 - Randy Rogers Band August 27 - Tracy Lawrence
glad to see more people that are a fan of his. i haven't listened to much of his new cd but i might just go ahead and buy it
Sorry if this has been posted already but here's a link to what I assume will be the first single off Reckless Kelly's new album that's supposed to release next month. I like it so far http://www.lonestarmusic.com/index.php?file=mer-musicmerch&iArtistId=826&iAudioAlbumId=6396
downloading the new Eli Young now. besides the songs from the EP on itunes, the others sound pretty decent
I've been jamming to Josh Abbott and Pat Green - "My Texas" and Turnpike Troubadours "Long Hot Summer Day" lately. Anyone have that mexican link for all the cd's?
looks like I'm gonna see Josh Abbott two nights in a row in September. On a Thursday night in Atlanta, then have tickets to see him and Pat Green in Nashville on Friday
Listened to the Eli Young Superfan concert series on Sirius the other night. Can't say I'm digging the new stuff.
Okies and North Texans..... Turnpike Troubadors at the Arbuckle Ballroom in Davis, OK tomorrow night.
You going to the game next Saturday? We've been talking about having some beers for like 2 years now.
Yeah, this is my last year as a student so I'll for sure be at all of them. We have said that for a while. I'm not positive yet where we'll tailgate because I usually go see some of my family but their parking lot got moved so they're moving their tailgate.
We changed from west endzone to club level behind the student section this year. We got new parking, not sure where it's at.
New Bob Keen album: http://www.29-95.com/music/story/robert-earl-keen-tries-avoid-odd-concept-songs#loopbegin Americana and Texas music pioneer Robert Earl Keen tried something different for his 16th studio album, Ready for Confetti, which hits store shelves Tuesday. Instead of seeking solitude by squirreling himself away like he did for the past decade inside the Scriptorium, a limestone retreat on his ranch between Bandera and his home in Kerrville, he wrote most of the new album’s tunes on the road. “I always avoided the road-song weariness because I was afraid you’d get too many songs about little bottles of shampoo and USA Today outside your door,” Keen said. “This time, I thought, you know, that’s a stupid rule.” Photo by: Bill OliveSo, facing time constraints during a busy nationwide touring schedule, he wrote on the bus, in motel rooms and back alleys behind clubs he was playing. Then he hit the studio with his traveling band of the past 17 years and producer Lloyd Maines, who also helmed Keen’s acclaimed 2009 album, The Rose Hotel. The result is a dozen songs that, while reflecting Keen’s knack for vivid lyrical portraits of life, love and conflict, seem more concise and accessible yet just as melodically complex. “It turned out pretty well because I don’t think I had as much time to think,” he said. “I just wanted to make songs that felt good under your foot when you tapped them and sang good on your throat when you sang them.” Those include Black Baldy Stallion, a twangy love tune; the country-fried Show the World, about helping others; the retro-swinging cruise through life Top Down; and one of the CD’s highlights, I Gotta Go, with a buoyant tap-dance melody that belies the subject — a ne’er-do-well who ends up on the wrong end of a gun. One of the things Keen wanted to avoid on Ready for Confetti was songs with inside jokes or odd concepts, such as a couple on his 2005 album What I Really Mean: A Border Tragedy, about weird happenings in an alley in Acuña; and The Great Hank, about running into Hank Williams in a modern-day bar. Keen almost pulled it off. He tips his hat to his signature song on The Road Goes On and On, a humorous but biting slap in the face of a jerk. It works just fine on that level, but it’s also one of those inside jokes about a real person. “I naively thought that in the world of music we were all brothers and we all hang out together, but the fact is, every once in a while, you run into some people who are not very nice,” Keen said. “I was being picked on by this person over the years, and I got tired of it, so I wrote him a song. You can only get bullied so many times.” There’s more than meets the eye in the title track, an upbeat and melodically textured rocker about whacked-out folks living on the edge of society. “Those people wake up in a new world every day,” he said. “I thought that by using those particular characters it would magnify the whole idea that we are all individuals and we all have our plans and hopes and dreams, but every day could be a big confetti canon kind of day or a big ol’ pie in the face kind of day — but all in all, it’s always different.” He co-wrote the reggae-infused love song Waves on the Ocean with Dean Dillon, the stalwart country songwriter whom he teamed up with for West Texas Town on George Strait’s Grammy-winning album Troubadour. The CD’s only outside songs are Train Song, by Todd Snider, whom Keen admires, and the album-ending Soul of Man, a beautiful early 1900s gospel song with harmonies by lead guitarist Rich Brotherton and bassist Bill Whitbeck. “I’ve used it sometimes as a closer in shows where people are really listening, like in a theater,” Keen said. “When you listen to the whole album, it makes it feel like you have gotten to the end, and here’s the message.” He also includes a stripped-down version of Paint the Town Beige, from his 1993 album A Bigger Piece of Sky, for two reasons — it’s a fan favorite he rarely plays live, and he wanted to expose it to newer listeners who may not delve back that far in his catalog. “And the surprise cherry on top is that the song is about settling into your life,” Keen said. “I realized I had written that song 20 years ago, and it didn’t fit me as much then as it fits me today. I truly grew into the song. That’s a cool thing.” The icing on the cake for Keen is his two daughters, Clara, 16, and Chloe, 10, and wife, Kathleen. They will celebrate their 25th anniversary on Sept. 20. “I’d say that’s quite a milestone in the music business — or anywhere nowadays, for that matter,” he said. In-store performance When: 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Where: Cactus Music, 2110 Portsmouth Admission: The show requires a wristband that can be had with the purchase of Keen’s new album from the store. KPFT Private Party When: 7 p.m. Wednesday Where: House of Blues’ Bronze Peacock Room, 1204 Caroline Tickets: $200 (cost includes two tickets and one copy of the album plus admission to a meet-and-greet);
downloaded the new REK album yesterday after pre ordering. Haven't gotten a chance to listen to more than a couple songs, but it sounds good so far
"Play a Train Song" is my favorite Todd Snider song so I'm immediately intrigued by REK's new release.
have been listening to it non stop the last few months. it hit me sometime over the summer that it is unbelievable
was gonna post "wagon musta lost a wheel or they lost ambition, one" but then i realized that there are so many great lines/lyrics in that song to only post one
Dude, me too. Everything about that song is fucking perfect. Yeah, I'm gonna go :aero:and say where they sing "Smoke on the Water" and "Joy to the World" was chill inducing the first time I listened to the song in it's entirety. And if people don't like it, .
Just ordered it (along with Stoney and REK's new albums) earlier today. Went cheap on the shipping though so will probably find a download before it comes in. Yes I still order cds.
Anyone have No Justices- Far From Everything album? Previewing it on iTunes right now.. Sounds legit, need some affirmation on it.. Their last album was badass
I do. It's pretty good, not as good as 2nd Avenue, but that's a tough comparison. I may be somewhat biased since they're Stillwater locals, but it's solid.
I havent listened to 2nd Avenue.. I have their first album No Justice, which I think is badass.. You think 2nd Ave is better than that.... Big game for yall this weekend also
That first one is really good, but I like 2nd Ave a little better. It's probably a toss up for me between the first one and the latest. I'm headin to College Station for the game, pumped but nervous as hell
Alright I'll give 2nd ave a listen as well... I'm headed to CS as well.. Should be a badass and rowdy game
fucking law school is killing me this week. It's been a lot of reading every night so far but not unmanageable, but this week has sucked ass. Wouldn't be all that terrible except for the fact that Micky and the Motorcars was playing tonight in Atlanta. I swear every time they or Reckless Kelly are in the same city as me, something comes up and I can't go. Two of my favorite bands and I've never seen either live. I may just have to sack up and make a road trip to Texas for like a solid month this summer, if only I could afford such a venture.
I mean tonight as in Wednesday. I've been up all night working on this ridiculous 14 page memo due by 8 AM Friday, so it's still tonight the 21st to me. If I didn't also have about 150+ pages to read for my other classes the next couple days, I would have tried to go tonight and worked on this all day tomorrow.
wonder how i fucked that up. had it written on my calendar for yesterday. well, maybe i'll be able to catch it after all. thanks for the heads up
