Thought it was really good. I’m mildly bothered by the pendent being purchased by Billy though. But I guess it’s really not that important.
The show would’ve been better had I thought about the title of the show more instead of insisting on it being a murder mystery show. That’s not really the show’s fault. I do feel though that it did attempt to tackle too much.
Show has had some incredible acting, but the Mare-Lori car scene may have been the best in the series.
kinda what i think too. a lot of things that were just distractions, IMO. good to very good show, but i was more intrigued after the first few episodes. Winslet was incredible
Guns & roses spaghetti incident Ole dirtys nigg* please sans got your money eastbound and down season 2 Things more disappointing
Agreed on a few things that are intentionally there to throw people off. However, the opening seen between John and Billy is what bothered me. John contemplating killing Billy and then even himself in a brief moment. During that whole conversation, not one mention of what really happened while blaming each other.
Spoiler He doesn’t want anyone to find out who DJ’s real dad is because his parents (and probably him) want to keep him
iirc the sales receipt just said Ross and Mare assumed Billy because Erin had stayed in his cabin and lived with him shortly.
A lot was going on, but isn’t that kind of more authentic? don’t get me wrong the so doing it and the incest and all that is unusual and a bit much but hell even that isn’t unheard of on the news. People have shit going on. A detective can be in a tough life with personal issues. A deacon can have had a horrible past and be moved to a new Parrish (that’s sadly really commonplace). Life is messy. That’s what was so real about it IMO. Hollywood usually makes things overly simple in an effort to tell a story. I appreciated the muddiness of it all. That said, how does billy and mare’s BFF not end up in jail?
Probably up to Mare and the Sergeant to press charges and they decided not to. They already had the dad and the son. Leave the mom at home to take care of the daughter
Yes, pretty sure we only heard her say Ross and just assumed she saw Billy also or thought it because of what was told to her about that night.
I was wondering the same because the show wasn't clear on it because it seemed to be more of a diversion than actual development of Dylan's story. The reason I found online makes sense. Dylan was doing it in an attempt to hide John as the real father and keep Dj under Dylan's parents care.
So when Mare came to Loris house that morning thinking it was Billy, Lori knew it was actually Ryan? Billy and John had already worked it out that Billy was going to take the fall for it, to keep Ryan/John out of jail bc he didn’t have a family, but they obv weren’t aware of Jess coming forward with the photo? Kind of confused how much Lori knew, and also makes the John/Billy gun scene at the river confusing. Billy got a call from John the night of the murder, helps to cover up his nephews crime, then agrees to take the fall, then is “oh just shoot me”
Yeah I think Lori initially believed there was an affair but John had told her the truth prior to Mare coming over.
Yeah, Ryan confirmed to his mom he was back with the same woman, even though he knew it was Erin. part of the cover-up.
1. Billy bought it for John. 2. John bought it under Billy’s name 3. Billy was really proud of his brother and Erin and wanted to commemorate their copulation.
This comment deserves all the likes because of this part alone. There’s a scene in this show that has a mother who buried her husband because of suicide, her daughter and her ex husband who buried their son, holding their grandson who they are raising as their own all sending off an incredibly grounded young woman they all helped raise to college all the way across the country. Life is cruel and sad and uncomfortable and joyful and beautiful and wonderful and sad. I really appreciate how well this show got that point across. Easily an all time favorite of mine. Easily
I enjoyed true detective s1 more but this show has to be #2 in the HBO mini series group and definitely had a better ending. There really isn’t much I can pick apart.
Solid and enjoyable show, but not even close for me. It's above average to very good for me, but there wasn't anything about it that made it any better than most of the crime dramas that I regularly watch from the UK or elsewhere. It was meat and potatoes for me as a crime drama, which I would watch any day, but in the long run it won't be that memorable. True Detective had absolutely epic scenes, like the one camera shoot. The closest this came was the scene where she caught the first guy and her partner got shot. I think this could have benefitted from a slightly longer season. I don't feel the aftermath of that got it's due.
I honestly don’t think this was a meat and potatoes cop drama but more exceptional character study into a gutted and hollowed out community. I think solely judging this show as a cop drama will ultimately set it up for failure. I was much more engrossed in Mare’s life and how the events were such an albatross in this small town. I feel like the death of Zobal and him as a character was kind of a sign that this isn’t about the investigation. True Detectives S1 is some of the greatest television of all time but that’s a true crime drama. To me, that wasn’t the purpose of Mare.
In the end Mare's friend sort of ended up in the same spot as Mare...no husband, lost a son, and left with a daughter to raise.
I got all of that, but there are plenty of police dramas that do the same. I watch a ton of English cop dramas and most of them have the story about the cop and the crime. Almost all feature a cop who is divorced, which is kind of funny. Again, I thought it was very good, but something was missing for me to take it to the next level.
Man to each their own but I can’t imagine watching this show and not coming away fully satisfied and fulfilled.
It can go either way. Once they included certain aspects they had to go deeper, or not include them at all. Pretty much two sides of the same coin.
Minor gripe. Dillon can't afford a few grand for what he thought was his own sons ear surgery. Yet he drives around in a rare mint condition 1970's Bronco he could sell and buy a fucking house with.
I don't think it was about him not actually being able to afford it. It was about him being immature and not being ready to be a father. I think the whole series was ultimately about the difficulty of parenthood in 2020/21.
Nah he said he didn't have the money and his parents did enough. I'm sorry but justifying my gripe is a bigger gripe than my gripe.
Totally agree w you. I thought it was pretty flawless from start to finish. Are people expecting some crazy jaw dropping twist ending in every show now? I thought the one provided was a pretty big twist until maybe halfway through the final episode. What exactly is the gripe? I thought it was the best show I've seen in years

Just finished e7. Spoiler Knew something was wrong when they wrapped that shit up so fast. Fuck Mare. . Well done.
