Probably not. I think you're likely right, mine was just wishful thinking instead of the obvious "we all love this guy, lets bring him in" play they seem to have made

Unless it’s a red herring the moth he used to melt the wraiths clearly is a Gandalf indicator.

I'm really going to dislike it if it's Gandalf. Just doesn't make any sense.

People keep saying this, but there really isn’t anything saying he wasn’t there ever in 2A. Would actually make sense if he gets wrecked by Sauron in this show because he didn’t want to be sent in 3A because he was scared of Sauron.

I’m still going with it being one of the Blue Wizards; one of the unfinished tails hinted that he got to ME sometime in the second age, then went back to Valinor, and then returned with the other Maia and went east and eventually was corrupted.

The fact that the one ring was under his nose for years and years would be even worse if he was around the first time the one ring was being used.

I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong but that just doesn't make sense to me that he wouldn't recognize it if he was around for it the first time.

Well we haven’t seen the one ring at all yet, we’ve only seen the elven rings, one of which winds up being Gandalf’s.

I'm talking about when Bilbo has it. How does Gandalf not recognize it at all if he's seen it before.

They 100% want everyone to think it’s Gandalf, it’s the only reason to include those Easter eggs. With Halbrand being Sauron like we all predicted my guess is it’s not a herring.

Idk, it says explicitly in the essay on Istari in Unfinished Tales that “they first appeared in Middle Earth about year 1000 of the third age”.

I get why they brought him in as a familiar character and they’ve shown they’re not real interested in a coherent timeline but i don’t think there’s wiggle room to say this is reasonable based on the written accounts.

guys, it's Gandalf. I said a long time ago if they wanted to be boring Halbrand would be Sauron and the Stranger would be Gandalf and if they wanted to really shake things up Halbrand would maybe end up a Nazgul or something else and the Stranger would be Saruman or something a bit more out of left field but that's probably what lore nerds would hope for and they made this show for the general public and not lore nerds so Halbrand is Sauron and the Stranger is Gandalf. I'm guessing he'll be Mithrandir on this show and probably cross paths with Galadriel and/or Elrond, who will recognize him as a Maiar and thus name him.

well, Rhun got mentioned because the wraiths thought he was Sauron and Sauron spent a lot of time hiding with the Easterlings. FWIW every one of the Istari except Gandalf spent time in Rhun but I imagine the angle will be "just because the books never said it happened doesn't mean it didn't" like well, Gandalf being in ME in the SA. also worth pointing out Rhun is gigantic and not particularly well mapped, it's not like it's a destination city or something, a lot of major characters could be in Rhun at the same time and never come close to crossing paths.

As somebody who doesn’t know the lore, have only seen the movies but don’t remember a ton of details, I’ve enjoyed it. It is a bit slow at times, and the Harfoots bring nothing besides trying to humanize the stranger.

Shouldn’t they have discovered Sauron’s identity after forging the rings? Did Galadriel really not think “hey maybe we shouldn’t do the things Sauron is obsessed with us doing”?

I felt like even in that last episode not much happened. Other than the revealing of someone who we already guessed and the forging of something what else even happened? These guys need to learn how to move a plot along.

With the understanding that one of the Tolkiens is blocking you from sticking with the written works: If you had the backdrop of the Tolkien universe and the budget of Amazon, don't you think you could have come up with something a little better than this? They are getting a major boost from people being just generally interested because it is the Tolkien universe and they'd watch whatever you put out there. But this could have been much better.

I can tell you that if the Tolkiens were blocking me from accessing the good shit even after offering a pile of cash, I would not give a single fuck that in chapter 49 of Unfinished Tales it clearly says that the Istari didn’t arrive until TA 1100, and I’m marketing my show towards the median potential viewer, who is not going to be upset at changes to history that they’re not familiar with.

What power did the One Ring ever weild over the elven or dwarven rings? Obviously the 9 human kings become the Ring Wraiths, but from my little knowledge it doesn't seem like anything happens with the others.

I'm honestly not an expert by any means but I think they do for a time but then figure out what Sauron is up to so they stop wearing them. But I could be completely wrong too.

But even if that is the case the show may change it since they are trying to rings to the elves being able to stay in ME.

They don’t let him corrupt them. Galadriel even dropped that aspect of the lore verbatim. He has a hand in crafting all the other rings. But the elves do use them - for instance it’s how Galadriel keeps lothlorien from fading.

Sauron has a hand in making the 9 for men and the 7 for dwarves but never touched the 3 elven rings, which Celebrimbor did on his own. Show got right up to that line but his hands off of them didn’t allow him to tether them to the one ring and Galadriel, Elrond, and Cirdan then Gandalf are all wise/savvy enough to use them appropriately.

IIRC, when he put on the one ring the elves could feel his evil and took off the rings. The dwarves were too stubborn and strong willed to turn to Sauron, but it made them all greedy and selfish and doomed them. The humans turned into Nazgûl with the quickest of ease.

From what I can recall, the three were made independent from Sauron. And were worn until he put the one on his hand. Then they immediately perceived him and took them off. Then Isildur cut the one from Sauron’s hand they were able to use the three again freely.

the rings were made in reverse on the show. the Elves, helped by Sauron, made the 16 rings of power. after this happened, Sauron departed and Celebrimbor, of his own doing, decided to make three more rings about a century later so that the Elves had some of their own. because Sauron wasn't there he wasn't able to "link" those rings to himself like he did with the main rings but because they were made with knowledge he granted, he did have some level of power over them. not long after Celebrimbor made the three Elvish rings, Sauron constructed the One Ring and the Elves heard Sauron's voice and took their rings off. once Sauron was defeated in the War of the Last Alliance, the rings were safe to put back on and the Elves did so and used them. this will probably be how the show ends, with the Stranger/Gandalf/Mithrandir being given one by who I hope is Cirdan, and Elrond will be given his by Gil-galad.

also, Galadriel was suspicious of Sauron in the books, he was just good enough to hide that he was Sauron. he basically was a traveler of sorts and she didn't believe his bullshit from the start but she never had any proof he was Sauron. Sauron in the show is like a Bond villain, he wasn't doing this schtick in the books. he would have never revealed his plan to her in freaking Eregion. the show just chose to weave his and Galadriel's stories together so now there could be no surprise smith to show up and teach Celebrimbor. he deceived her (Sauron, like Melkor, was an expert at this) initially but the second Celebrimbor said weird shit about power over flesh she knew something was wrong. she wasn't brainless but she wasn't immune to being deceived like well, practically everyone was with Sauron. Tom Bombadil was probably the only thing on ME that Sauron couldn't trick.

The final third of the season was much better. This show has a lot of potential, but they must improve the pacing next season.

Minor pet peeve, and I’m sure it is technically correct, but the way the elves pronounce “Galadriel” seems silly to me.

Would think we’d rarely see the Harfoot clan. The only reason we saw them was the girl and the stranger. Now they’re separated, so hopefully we just get a couple check-ins to see where they’re at.

if you watch the first three minutes of the first movie you know how this show will end. for people familiar with the books and/or movies the thing for the showrunners is to make how we get from point A to point B interesting and I'd say they're doing a decent job of it if I ignore them absolutely massacring the timeline beyond recognition. we're headed directly for the big war so things should (generally) pick up the pace in future seasons. there will be other fun things along the way like the fall of Numenor to help distract us.
