It really is, but good at the same time. I think I only understood about 70% of he was saying, but got the gist of it. The book gets better in the the second half as you connect more dots.
Since I was finishing up A Dance with Dragons during its month, I plan on reading it after I finish Wool.
I'm actually in the Zachry parts of Cloud Atlas now. I would say that the part most interesting to me is the Luisa story line, but we'll see what happens here.
I have Reader's ADHD (something I just made up). Books that don't grab me early on lose me. If I have to walk through a book like I'm walking through mud, I usually just grab one of the other 5000+ books I have in my extensive library. Wool is a damn good read, though.
Finished Catch-22 last night, one of the best books ive ever read. Genius. This is the only book by Joseph Heller I've read, any other ones worth reading? Starting Wool later today or tomorrow, very excited.
I can't believe I haven't read another Heller book either. Below is from wiki. I dug his response to the critic, shit's almost true. I should check out Closing Time. Heller's follow-up novel, Something Happened, was finally published in 1974. Critics were enthusiastic about the book, and both its hardcover and paperback editions reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list.[5] Heller wrote another five novels, each of which took him several years to complete.[16] One of them, Closing Time, revisited many of the characters from Catch-22 as they adjusted to post-war New York.[16][19] All of the novels sold respectably well, but could not duplicate the success of his debut.[5] Told by an interviewer that he had never produced anything else as good as Catch-22, Heller famously responded, "Who has?"
You're the only reason I wasted my money on Blood Meridian in the first place, and didn't ever completely finish it after 3 tries. I also read "The Road" and liked the movie better than the book.
Has anyone read "The Rook" by Daniel O'Malley http://www.amazon.com/The-Rook-Nove...=UTF8&qid=1349818127&sr=8-1&keywords=the+rook Has anyone read "The Strain" by Chuck Hogan and Guilermo Del Toro http://www.amazon.com/Strain-Book-O...1349818534&sr=1-1&keywords=the+strain+trilogy Both were recently recommended to me... Oh - and 1 week until the second book of "The Passage" trilogy by Justin Cronin comes out.
Princeton Press having some 20% off special on all law and political science titles U of Chicago Press always seems to be having an awesome sale: can get up to 80% on some stuff in all fields
Read Wool: Omnibus for the TMB Bookclub and enjoyed it. Then I read Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut which was short but really great. I flew through it. Will have to read it again sometime soon because i read it so fast I'm afraid its going to get sandwiched in between longer reads in my memory. Now i'm 16% of the way through Closing Time. Not as good as Catch-22 yet (no surprise though) but still very enjoyable with some old characters and some new. Can't wait to read more.
Just finished The Silent Don by Scott Dietche, about Tampa/Florida/Havana mob boss Santo Trafficante Jr. and to a lesser extent his mob predecessor/father Santo Sr. Discusses the families rise to power from prohibition, taking over the bolita rackets, and being a main point of entry in the early narcotics trade to operating the Havana casino's for the majority of LCN across the country (before Vegas was Vegas), involvement in the Bay of Pigs, Hoffa, JFK, and for those that remember Donnie Brasco; his involvement w/ Joe Pistone, The King's Court bar/casino. Not the most entertaining read, but a good look into one of the more secretive/under the radar mob families/bosses in history.
Wanted to make you folks aware that the TMB Book Club is starting a new book for November and can be voted on here: http://the-mainboard.com/index.php?threads/tmb-book-club-poll-for-november-2012.116508/
Finished Cloud Atlas and have moved onto the Wool series. About 70% through the second book. not too shabby
My favorite book of all time... I made a ruckus out of it on TMB when I first finished it, and am glad people here started to read it too.
Just finished the Hunger Games trilogy and i was surprised that i really enjoyed it.I thought it was just some teeny twilight book but nope its worth reading. Time to reread A song of fire and ice for the 3rd time.
yep gonna start 1 and go through 5 might end up being the entire series because GRR fat ass gonna die before we get book 6
Am I the only one ITT to of read the Acacia Trilogy? It was talked about a while ago, and a lot of folks had it on their list, but I'm not sure who or if anyone did? Curious what you thought of it if so, because I really enjoyed it.
maybe it's me but I'm under the impression Truman was asking if you really enjoyed the entire series of Hunger Games. That's the question I would have about your op
oh and yep maybe its because i expected it to be horrible.I mean its not award winning but enjoyable.
Celemo I meant ASOIAF. As in wow that is a big series to re-read. Although, I have no problem saying that I also loved The Hunger Games. Twas really good despite the last book being just meh
New book club poll for December for those of you interested. http://www.the-mainboard.com/index....b-poll-for-december-2012.117605/#post-8193612
Trying to read In Search of Lost Time/Remembrance of Things Past by Proust. My god this thing's a lot of work. Every sentence is a huge paragraph. This is my second attempt at slaying this dragon, not sure I will make it.
I'm a fiction guy, with the exception of Bill Bryson books(favorite: A Short History of Nearly Everything - amazing). So, I'm not much help there, but I did google it, and it seems you have many good options. I want some good Texas history suggestions
Someone tell me the best Sci-Fi... I've read Ender's Game, but haven't read Dune or Hyperion (or anything by either author). How important is it for me to read Dune? Is it just a classic, or is it actually impossible to put down?
I haven't read it which is pretty embarrassing for a scifi/fantasy geek such as myself but two of my friends who have couldn't recommend it enough
Trying to finish up the Harry Potter series, next up is The Defector by Daniel Silva. Want to read Ready Player One also. I've got a Nexus 7 so I want to start getting into Kindle books so I can take them with me easier. Just wish I had more time.
Big fan of Dune, haven't read it in forever...and like most movie adaptations, as good as Dune the movie was, they left out some pretty cool parts. I suggest reading it, never read any of the follow up books though. Conversely, I haven't read Ender's Game despite knowing I probably should.
