You aren’t actually being punished, tho. You can beat Father Gasgoine. I’ve played through a dozen times and I’ve used the cheese once. You’re rewarded with the cheese for exploring

Just stairway cheese. I went 0/30 against Father even with the music box because his 2nd phase is obnoxious and I honestly just couldn't get the timing down on parrying
My understanding is the music box can stun him like the Margit shackle…? I got him down to his second phase with him only hitting me twice

Just hit Old Yharnam and level 30 plus 3’d the Saw Spear and added a gemstone that does 1.1% attack and +1 health regen things are going well
Not being able to travel between lamps is lame design I’m sure the fans concocted some bullshit “lore reason” for it like they do with enemies being able to clip through walls with their attacks
Also, I can’t remember where you can just grab chikage or whatever in the chalices. You can get one later in the game for sure.
I’ve killed something called the Blood Starved Beast also on the second try Easy game imo what are these chalices for
This game is really good my only complaints so far would be fast travel and a lack of weapon diversity I’m having an easier time with this game than I did with Elden Ring so far
Chalice dungeons. You can run through the initial dungeon fairly early and it’s not a bad idea to maybe look up a glyph for an early gemstone but the meat of the dungeons are gonna need to wait till your character is fleshed out

There’s no encumbrance penalty so you can use the LHS and switch to the tonitrus situationally. Its a good way to play
