Baldur’s Gate 3

Fire magic is pretty solid throughout the game. Only “themed” magic build I’ve tried so far but it slaps. Has a pretty good spell at every level from cantrip to level 4. Probably the best early-mid game spell element.

Ice and Lightening are stronger at the end game levels but to really make them shine you have to use water.

me and my ps5 buddy who's played a bunch and does normal d&d sessions finally talked a couple of our XB bros into starting up a game last night.

went with Paladin for the first time ever in early game. We killed the tieflings that trapped Karlach so fuck me oath is broken.

Pally folks:

If I pay this dude 1000 gold does he vanish / there's no way to pickpocket that back?
Do ALL of our groups decisions affect my oath if it's restored or just conversations that I start? We've got a bard so I am ok not speaking to anyone ever.
I really would like to have Hunter's Mark and Enmity from the Vengence oath early game and then Misty Step/Hold Person at level 5.

 

I don’t know the answer to your oath breaking questions but can you cross play between ps5 and Xbox?

 

Oathbreaker is the best paladin class

 

What oath-specific stuff does Oathbreaker get that's better than Vengence?

I do not want to just be a all-time bless/haster Pally. Was going for more of an attacking spell + smite guy. Vow of Enmity is the best level 3 Oath ability IMO which is why I'm pissed. Oathbreaker having Hellish rebuke is nice but just means fewer smites.

long game odds are I respec into a Sorcerer at level 6 since we don't have a true offensive caster (bard is swords bard for now until he learns more of how the spells work)

 

aura of hate is really good plus you can use a channel oath charge to do 1d4 necrotic damage plus charisma modifier also at level 5 you get darkness which is one of my favorite spells

 

I've read Darkness is a fun mechanic to wreck people but idk if this is a dumb question or not but the class features "darkvision" (3 of our 4 have it up to 12m) that would mean darkness spell wouldn't affect our fighting inside the cloud? Just we wouldn't be able to do ranged attacks/spells at people inside the cloud?

Our swordsbard doesn't have darkvision and is going to be most likely a hunters mark > ranged flourish guy for a few levels, and we have a 2x 1h crossbow rogue that wouldn't be able to shoot people inside the cloud

 

Aura of Hate is good but I'm strictly talking Paladin levels 3-5 since that's a decent chunk of Act 1 that's kinda the hardest part in the game IMO.

Spiteful suffering gets a saving throw for advantage and is a normal action + oath. Vow of Enmity is automatic advantage and uses a bonus action + charge.

and I fuckin love misty step for a melee character. Especially if there's an argument for who gets the Click Heels bonus dash boots from the myoconid colony chick

Doing a run as a Lolth sworn Drow bardlock based on Critlander’s build also doing Karlach as a barbarian/eldeitch knight tavern brawler thrower build and I’m having a blast

I can’t stop creating new characters, over 400 hours in and I still haven’t done anything as a magic based build this game man

 

This game is so good. Just made a fat monstrosity drink himself to death

 

vengeance pally is best in a crit fishing build. oathbreaker probably better outside of that. devotion probably best overall though. but there are no wrong answers for pally subs.

so I was randomly gifted this game and don't have the first clue what its about. I've never once played any sort of DnD or turn based style game, is this even worth installing or will I instantly be totally lost?

 

Some console questions as I get ready to install.

1. can you have multiple campaigns going simultaneously and/or can a character jump in and out? My partner will local co-op with me sometimes but won’t play as often as I do.

2. how does single player work? Do you end up in an npc party, do you control all 3 characters(similar to a final fantasy thing)?

Fuck. Encountered my first bug. Went to save and the game crashed. Hadn’t saved for like an hour before that as I was just exploring and clearing out areas I hadn’t walked through yet in the shadowlands

 

I moved on from Paladin after I broke my oath for the 2nd time in 2 play sessions (1st was setting up the grove vs. minthara helms deep battle, and 2nd was Auntie Ethel).
2nd time cost me 2000 gold and I went 0/50 trying to save scum steal it back... got lucky on the first 1000 and had enough inspirations to fool the oathknight into thinking it wasn't me.

Going full Sorcerer now instead because we legitimately have no caster: 1 TB Monk, 1 ranger/rogue hand crossbow, and 1 swordsbard.

I avoided casters for a lot of my original playthrough because I was a noob and the casting mechanics + random interactions are a LOT to pickup on. Respec'd Wyll to a full on Fire Sorcerer for the last 1/2 of Act 3 and it was a really fun build.

Decided to try it out in my new COOP playthrough and by level 5-6 a "create water" sorcerer (draconic + lightening) is super fun. It does take a little planning since some of these mechanics are equipment based - Spellsparker from the rewards for Wakunan Rest rescue is a big one. Boots for electrifying water/giving charges. Ring from the basement of the Arcane Tower that keeps you from being electrocuted + gives lightening resistance (***I'm pretty sure this will keep Haste concentration from breaking if I step in sparkley water, which was an issue in a couple fights). And a couple of Amulets - first one that gives "Lightening Blast" bonus action to spend all these charges, and the Amulet from the mindflayer at the Myconid Colony that gives you 1 free level 3 restored spot per long rest, just equip > restore slot > put back on the other Amulet.

Blasting everything with lightening has been real fun in goblinville at level 5 with most of that equipment. Going full Melee shocking grasp on wet people is actually super fun

Level 6 swapping over to Ice Sorc with the special staff you put together in the underdark. If what I've read is right (haven't made this switch bc we're a couple fights from leveling up) if I create water on a group of enemies and hit them with any kind of cold damage, it has a chance to "chill" them, which combined with wet = you freeze the enemy. So I'm hoping the mechanic lets me create water on 1st action and follow up with a twincast ice knife to hopefully freeze 1-2 enemies per turn and let my monk bludgeon the fuck out of them.

Pretty sure level 7-8 is going to go into 2-fighter for action surge just to make sure I don't get cock-blocked by counterspell every turn trying to get my Haste casted. My group likes to wander all willy nilly and so pre-casting then going to turnbased mode is something I'm gonna have to engrain in their fuckin heads.

Besides that... hit the SELECT button (XB) or the big trapezoid button on PS5 when you're looking at items in the game. it gives you a TL;DR explanation of everything related to that action/equipment/spell whatever.

 

DOS2 bros - what in the hell is the equivalent of pressing T to inspect your actions and stuff? I can hover my mouse over something and in brings up the initial tool tips and gives SOME information but if something procs a status I can't move my mouse over that status word to see what in the hell it actually means. I'm pretty sure T locked the item screens for you in BG3. Is that a thing in DOS2 or am I just going to have to play with fucking wikipedia pulled up on my 2nd screen?

Fort Joy is annoying as fuck and I'm probably gonna wait and finish my BG3 run with Mrs. Lau and have that be our next Co-Op game since we got her a laptop with decent specs for christmas.

 

I definitely recommend a play through as The Dark Urge (embracing the Urge) at least once. I just started a play through to resist the Urge

 

I should use potions/scrolls more often.

 

Mod question - does everyone playing, if doing coop, have to have the same mods installed in the same order and everything on Vortex or whatever mod program to be able to play in my game that has the mods? Or does just the host have to have that?

i started an honor mode run with no mods. i got to the grove before i decided to reinstall party limit begone. no regerts.

 

I really want to play on steam deck more, but I just can’t stand playing it with controller. I need the toolbar, lol.

 

I have only played it on steam deck when traveling or with my PC hooked up to my TV with a controller and I have no problems

Just can’t contemplate viewing these cutscenes on a monitor when I have a 55 inch tv 4 feet away

 

well being a foot away from a monitor is the same as being four feet away from a tv.

 

I have ~400 hours on my PS5 and I might buy on PC just to mod. Someone talk me into/out of this.

Also I am thinking of playing an all psychic damage Gith GOO Warlock. Will this work or will I end up just Eldritch Blasting all over again?

 

buy the pc, you wont regret it. bg3 modding is great, everything else beyond that is too.

and yeah, you'll probably just keep blasting.

 

Outside of the joysticks for movement, I can’t stand it on controller. I’m sure I’d get used to it. There’s just too much to cycle through for the cog wheels and what not.

I've started a few over the past few days. I'm running mods, but no gameplay mods. More QoL and UI immersion stuff. Accidentally stole something in the grove and got massacred in my latest run

 

i'm literally setting up mods to do a fully level scaled level 20 run.

 

Do you up the difficulty on those with mods, too? Was looking at some synergy builds meant for modded difficulty runs and it looks pretty cool.

 

The UI mod I'm playing with right now is Aether's Immersive UI and I wish I'd have done it on the first playthrough. All of the UI disappears in normal play and shows up when you hover the mouse over the areas where it usually shows up. Turn based also shows all the UI.
