I get the idea, but I’ve never found a dub I like more than the sub version. I don’t even bother anymore. I like Frieren enough that I may rewatch in English for the heck of it though.
We are same. The last anime I watched entirely in dub was DBZ. Even that is hard to do now. I chalk it up to the awkward way that names are pronounced and an inability to fluidly translate emotional dialogue into English. Everything heavy just sounds right in Japanese. That’s aside from tonal and thematic differences that get lost in translation from sub to dub.
The only shows I can watch dubbed are the ones I grew up watching dubbed. So the OGs like Gundam, Robotech, DBZ and Bleach….later Naruto. Some rando movies like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D. The best dubbed is Yu Yu Hakusho, final decision no take backs no questions. Everything else has to be subbed. But, dubbed have dramatically improved since the 80s and 90s used to be very lazy. You youngins are lucky, I used to watch anime without English subs or I’d buy VHS tapes and send them out to a lady who would put the dubs on them.
Naruto dub is god awful. For one, hate the VAs. 2nd, people literally say stuff like Mangekyou sharingan and Jinchuriki in english. The idea of a dub is to translate
Only time i felt that way about a dub losing the character/subtlety was Chainsaw Man. I guess i typically end up finding very good dubs.
Goku's character in Japanese is verrrry different from the one in the dub. This was more intentional in an effort to make him more appealing to western audiences (akin to Japanese Superman). Ironically, the most manga-accurate depiction in English of Goku is the one Team 4-star did in DBZ abridged.
Gotta be honest, dbz never appealed to me more than dumb saturday morning cartoon fighting and watching the heroes overcome stuff all the time
Uhhh that’s exactly what it’s always been. It’s the original Superman esque inspired. It used to air on some bootleg channel in Washington back in the early 90s on Sunday mornings. I’d have to go to church so I’d record it along with a few other old 80s era anime. Good times.
dbz (and i guess yu yu hakusho) introduced USA millenials to anime. I'll love it forever but if I'm being honest it has looooooong since been surpassed by way better shows. DBZ creator knocked it out of the park with saiyans - freeza - cell but fell off hard after that
Oh yeah. The War of the Best was cool but the time skip is like going from Dragonball to DBZ. The fights to end the Wano arc are all insane and they span like 100 episodes.
Man I just gave it an honest shot and really couldn’t get into it. For whatever reason, it loses a lot of its charm in English for me. I can’t say that the Japanese VA are definitively more talented because I can’t understand any of it, but it seems that way. The delivery of lines just feels more on point. Frieren’s VA really seems to capture her perfectly imo. No offense meant btw! Just one dork’s opinion
Give it a couple episodes. She nails the cold-but-trying-and-still-curious delivery, like nails it. Stark also takes an episode or two.
Yeah that’s fair. It’s possible it was a just what I was used to type bias. I respect your takes, so I’ll give it another go
Solo Leveling has been pretty good so far, even if the "hey there's a real life dungeon people can enter like a video game" genre is crowded.
Just caught up on Frieren. I think the best word I can use is charming? Idk, but it’s already established itself as one of my favorites. Watching Frieren & Solo leveling at the same time has been fun. Also, FMA:B is the only dub I can tolerate. It’s genuinely phenomenal.
Kid binged that today. The power leveling annoys me. Same with the Slime anime. Characters go from useless to OP in about 5 episodes.
I generally prefer dubs over subs. Maybe it’s sacrilege, but I can’t stand goku’s japanese VA. Yuyu Hakusho is probably the GOAT dub along with full metal alchemist: brotherhood and maybe cowboy beebop. One of my favorite dubbed characters ever is Escanor from seven deadly sins, but man, that show fell off hard. If the show is good enough I don’t mind just watching subs, it’s how I watched all of attack on titan and demon slayer. I watched all of the English dub of solo leveling last night and it was pretty entertaining so far.
Jinwo is not even close to op, he's just not useless anymore. Idk how far the anime plans to go this season but they would have to go really far into the manhwa to feel he's op.
If you don't pay attention to the ranking system early on it may seem like he moved up fast but the people/monsters that he beat so far have been C and lower. Spoiler: future episodes spolier he still hasn't acquired his real skill yet. now when that happens he'll start surpassing his peers quickly but they aren't his main antagonist(s) anyway
Seven Deadly Sins had a lot of typical cringe early, but it had enough interesting elements to keep me bored bingeing for a while. I forget where I finally checked out, but it will remain unfinished
