So I have horrible sleep paralysis and night terrors. I get the someone holding my head down and seeing a shadowy figure/hearing things ones. Sucks because it basically ruins my night's sleep because if I try to go back to sleep I just feel that wave of impending doom start to wash over me every time I try. Anyone else have this? I've read it's somewhat common, at least the paralysis part.
Had night terrors once or twice. Mostly happened right after going through a tornado, so I figure that's what caused it. I've got mild sleep apnea. Have a cpap machine, don't use it.
I occasionally get night terrors. I also sleep about 4 hours per night during the week because of insomnia. Good times
I had a run of sleep paralysis for a few months which was fucking horrible. Hasn't happened in probably 2 years so it will probably happen tonight. Thanks asshole. I have mild sleep apnea and use my cpap when I remember to drink enough water during the day.
My dad has one and will swear by it til the day he dies. If you can afford it Hoss Bonaventure id look into it
I don't think night terrors and sleep apnea are connected? I mean, they didn't suggest it when I got my sleep studies done, but that doesn't mean they aren't. Idk.
First time I had sleep paralysis I thought I was bring abducted by aliens. Happens rarely now and most times now I can control it a bit. Also I have realized it happens when im really stressed or have a vitamin deficiency.
I used to sleep 8 hrs and wake up still tired. Now with the machine even 5 hrs will have me completely refreshed.
Have there been any studies to verify the link between the number of times an adult male shits his pants to the frequency of his night terrors?
Aliens and demons are supposedly the two most common that people think is what's causing it. I've read up on it and there are several old paintings of people sleeping with demons on their chests which are supposedly supposed to be about sleep paralysis.
I'm 99% sure I have sleep apnea but I've always been hesitant to get the mask. Is it super loud? How do you go about getting it under insurance? Tell your doc and get a sleep study referral?
Have chronic insomnia and occasion sleep paralysis. Can lucid dream whenever as well. Ask me anything.
Had sleep paralysis when I was younger. Fell asleep and woke up frozen while being fully aware Price is Right was on TV. Once I started researching it i found out you can enter lucid dreaming from sleep paralysis. Worked a few times but tbh it kind of stopped happening once I started lucid dreaming out of it. They say the most common way to have sleep paralysis happen is when you fall asleep sitting up with the lights on. When you unintentionally fall asleep and your body goes to REM state it paralyzes the nervous system so you don't go kicking everywhere during your karate fight dream ect. If this happens when you are sitting slightly up with the lights on it is obviously easier to suddenly awake causing your body to still think it is REM state but your mind is awake and aware but unable to unfreeze yourself. Shit is scary af yo.
I can occasionally lucid dream out of it when I can realize that I'm dreaming instead of trying to fight it off. It's very rare though, but awesome when it happens.
It's not loud when it's attached to your face. It is kinda loud when you take it off, just the sound of air blowing. Go to your normal doctor, tell them your symptoms, get a referral to sleep specialist. Think you'll usually meet with that doctor first before getting your dates for the sleep study. The sleep study is annoying as fuck. Go to doc office that has a bunch of crappy hospital beds, basically. They make you wear about 12 different nodes all over your body. Legs, arms, head, chest. They all hook up to this brick you can wear around your neck or maybe nearby. Go to sleep in a room that has a camera watching you at all times. If you roll over or need to get up to piss in the middle of the night, they'll speak to you through an intercom and then have to come in and unhook you as much as possible from the brick so you can move. You go back for a second one a week or two later, where they'll actually try to fit you with different styles of sleep masks, but you still have to be hooked up to all the shit. Then you go to a medical supply company to actually get the machine they prescribe to you and get it set with the proper pressure. I probably should wear my mask, but after all that they said it was pretty mild, and I'm not sure I ever really noticed that much of a difference. My parents and brother wear one and think it helps, but really I feel like I slept better without the shit on my face.
i had a CPAP machine before i got my tonsils out. you have to get a sleep study done which is like $400.00. doctor reads the report and they will diagnose you with sleep apnea. cpap machine is covered by insurance. way better idea is to attack the cause of the apnea. weight gain and tonsilitis are the two major causes. i had the latter, tonsils removed (fucking awful btw)...and i sleep well now.
Do you get the seeing the figures or hearing like garbled weird voices talking? Had a fucking terrible one last night, hence the reason I made the thread. I even somewhat remember in my dream before it hit someone saying "behind you" before I got that chill running up my spine before it starts.
Yea i would fight it off everytime as a kid because I was afraid I would never wake up again unless I forced myself to at that moment. Then I tried the lucid dreaming stuff... then I would just accept I was experiencing sleep paralysis and fall back asleep no fucks given. Now it doesn't happen anymore so I guess I'm not possessed. Some Asian cultures believe it's a dark spirit pressing down on your body
Also anyone still sleep walk? I very rarely do it now but as a kid I'd wake up in random places in my house. I think that's also connected to the night terrors which are more prevalent in childhood.
That's what it feels like especially with the hallucination and voices. I know from reading about I that its your brain basically still dreaming and projecting that dream into your half awake mind but when it's happening it seems real. I still fight it and try to yell, move, wake up. Really need to focus on trying to lucid dream though because that's like the best feeling ever when you wake up.
Never had a sleeping disorder but I went through a period where I thought the wicked witch was going to fly by my bedroom window and abduct my ass. Had me pinning up blankets and shit to cover up my window. It was pretty fucking traumatizing
Freddy Kruger got to me the worst. I was looking around every corner at night. That and I had a baby sitter watching one of the original Amityville horror movies. She told me not to watch but I couldn't help it. There was a fucked up scene in a bathtub and I swear to god I was a little bitch everytime I would go in the bathroom for like a year.
For a while in high school I would sleep walk somewhat regularly. I would actually be aware of what I was doing but basically didn't really have control over what I was doing. When I'd wake up, I'd remember it, but just thought it was a dream. I realized I hadn't been dreaming the morning I woke up after remembering "dreaming" taking all the posters off my bedroom walls only to find that the posters were actually removed form my walls.
Get night terrors about once a year. Used to terrify me pretty bad until I realized and read what they were. They feel very real and you're essentially awake and the dream world has now entered your room. You can't do shit because the chemical that keeps you still while you sleep is still pumping. You are frozen
Oh man, I hated the nose pillow. Felt too much like it was forcefully blowing the air up my nose. Went with just an over the nose mask. Wish I had gone with a full mask nose and mouth, because I think I would have liked it more.
I actually didn't think I still did it but I guess I do. I text my gf and asked her what weird shit I still do in my sleep.
I slept walk once while in college. Locked myself out of my bedroom over winter break, so the only people around were others on the two basketball teams. I think I was the only one in my entire dorm. Ended up sleeping in a lounge chair because there was no phone around, all I had on was a t-shirt and some shorts, and it was like 20 degrees outside. So There was no way in hell I was going to walk to the other end of campus where security was so I could get them to unlock my dorm. Ever since then I moved out on my own I've been afraid I'm going to sleep walk and do something stupid as shit like lock myself out of the house during the middle of night in the winter and freeze to death. Plus ever since I first slept walk, I have always been afraid I would start sleep walking during one of those rare nightmares where I'm dreaming of killing or hurting someone. Haven't had one of those in many years, but last time I had one I woke up pretty shaken by it. Worst part is that a lot of times when I have a nightmare, if I go back to sleep really quickly after waking up during it, I'll go right back into that dream, so I have to do stuff to keep me awake for a little while.
Damn, you need to get one of those night vision, motion detecting cameras in your bedroom. Like them wildlife cameras.
I'm honestly considering it. She says I do weird shit all the time. I'd like to see me during sleep paralysis as well. I sleep on my side so I feel like my head is being held down whereas most people who get it sleep on their back and feel like something is on their chest. Be interesting to watch.
And I always thought you weren't supposed to actually know what you were doing while sleep walking. I ALWAYS knew what I was doing when sleep walking in high school, I just couldn't control what I was doing. It was pretty damn mindblowing when I figured out I had been sleepwalking. It was like what is real, what is a dream, what else am I capable of doing without being able to control it?
I'll have sleep paralysis about once a month. Normally on Sunday nights after a big weekend (what a crazy coincidence). I've taught myself to identify what is happening and then focus on waking up; for some reason if I concentrate on trying to bend an arm or a leg it can snap me out of it. But yeah waking up, not being able to move and seeing a shadowy figure at the foot of the bed staring at you fucking sucks. Also, the word "nightmare" is a very old phrase that addressed the sleep paralysis phenomena as though a horse was sitting on you in the middle of the night, preventing you from moving or sitting up.
I can remember night terrors from my childhood still because they were so bad. I know what I'm doing when I'm having sleep paralysis but instead of accepting it I always fight it like in my head yelling or trying to move. I don't remember any of my sleep walking episodes though. It may be kind of the same thing where you're doing it right before you wake up so you are aware of what's going on.
No after my sleep walking I'd eventually just end up back in bed sleeping like a normal human being. I wouldn't wake up until the morning.
Which one do you see? Thank the gods I don't get the guy in the guy in the hat. I just get the shadowy outline of a person. I always try to flip whatever it is off. I don't know why but that's the one thing I try to do other than yell.
