Robert Glasper is scoring this and I watched him give an interview the other day where he mentioned that it was originally called Showtime but HBO nixed the name lol
Some of the reviews I’ve skimmed seem to be not great, which I hope is off the mark; they’ve seen more than us. I thought the first episode was awesome, but I’ll admit to being a huge sucker for nostalgia, and frankly, it’s probably enough to make me love this show in spite of any minor shortcomings
The show runner for this was on Ryen Russillo’s pod last week and he talked about West battling depression and how he was very hard to deal with in the 70s and 80s.
Reilly is a better fit for Buss and Ferrell should only be known for one basketball role and that is Jackie Moon also I didnt realize Buss was this big of a playboy back in the day
I'm sure they will show it in upcoming episodes, but he and Magic always hung out. I didnt know about Jerry West or that Kareem was a complete dickhead. Need StinkyPinky to chime in.
his autobiography is a really good read and touches on this. I still think they were a little unfair to him, he had to overcome a lot of really shitty things in his life before he found a measure of happiness. One thing that came through in the book that the show nailed is how much the Celtics losses ate at him. He is one of those guys like Jordan that struggles to ever turn it off, and those losses drove him insane.
Kareem has always been notorious for being extremely surly, especially with the media. A lot of people in general just portray him as an asshole, though I believe he's mellowed more as time as gone on. I've always thought that is why he is rarely mentioned as a contender for the GOAT, when he honestly has a very compelling case if you did a blind resume. But with the sour relationship he always had with the media, they never will give him as much love he probably deserves.
I think Kareem doesn't get as much mention because his prime was during what amounted to the dark ages of the NBA. He was by the far the best player of the most forgettable decade (1970s) in league history. Not counting the 40s/50s when the league was just starting in that statement, ftr.
Also the notion of him being surly is highly suspect imo. Like why wouldn't a black man with his brain and interests have an antagonistic relationship with ... so many things in America. Oh you think Kareem is ungrateful/rude? Innnnnteresting emphatic sideeye
They got Sally fucking Field and Michael Chiklis in this shit too?!?!?!?!!!! Chiklis as Red was awesome
I didnt realize the GM Bill was Celtic great Bill Sharman. That was my mistake. NEXT WEEK IS PAT RILEY TIME
They nailed the Magic, Kareem and Buss casting, but I'm not sure the West character can act. His scenes seem pretty corny. He does look like him though. The Auerbach scenes were a little corny too. But all things considered, still an entertaining show. Reilly is carrying it and he is great for this role. I'd love more Kareem in the coming episodes.
w2b gets to see his man Tark in action I never thought of Pat Riley having a fruity voice but I bet Jack Parkman and the #Miami Heat fanboys love seeing their idol me personally not a big fan since he made the Miami Heat franchise relevant and the 2006 Finals
Clarke's a very good actor. I don't know any of the real West's life off the court, but I'm confident he's portraying as directed.
Never knew Clarke was British until I saw him in an interview last week. Can't be the women playing Claire is Gabby Hoffman from Uncle Buck.
