Why does the collective of cosmopolitan gays feel so ominous? Surely Tanya will be taken advantage of.
yeah, they seem like an opportunistic bunch to say the least. But, it’s so heavy handed it might be intentional misdirection.
Saying "tell me everything" to Tanya is the biggest tell they aren't on the level. A narrative sledgehammer.
Show is fucking amazing. Spoiler My theory has always been that Albie erupts. They’ve been building him up too much as the nice guy. I could see him coming to Portia’s rescue and murking the male prostitute
I’m getting some major Joran Van Der Sloot vibes from the nephew though I definitely didn’t see that ending coming. The one chick has an incredible voice. The tension was through the roof every time Aubrey Plaza’s character opened her mouth. Show is awesome.
I kinda buy this theory I came across on Reddit. Spoiler The straight cowboy Quinton was in love with was Greg. He would still do anything for Greg, including killing Tanya so Greg inherits her money (and will presumably reward Quinton). That's why Greg was so pisssed when Portia shows up, she's going to be in the way. So Quinton is having his rentboy distract Portia.
I can appreciate the theory, but Quinton was literally just reciting the plot of Brokeback Mountain because he knew Tanya is too dumb to know any better.
Goated episode. Michael Imperioli and F Murray's conversation was great, especially in the context of Cam and Daphne / Ethan and Harper.
This show is so good. This season is better than Season 1 imo. I think its interesting that Portia has the same insecurities as Tanya and right as Portia is freaking out about her life, she gets shown a life of opulence and dives in head first... just like Tanya does.
Also, Id bet the story about the old lady on the island who was killed by the mob was some foreshadowing.
Yeah he's painful to watch. I think he's that way because he doesn't seem to know what a healthy relationship is because of his father. So he's trying to overcorrect by being perfectly deferential towards Portia, but really he's just like his dad and grandad while also getting taken advantage of by Lucia.
The grandfather, son and grandson are all patriarchal assholes but in different ways relative to the times they came up in. F Murray Abraham is the old school "grab her by the pussy" asshole who is very open about his misogyny. Not only did he not respect his wife, but he was completely clueless to her feelings or self awareness. Michael Imperioli is a boomer fake feminist who at the very least knows the right things to say. He considers himself above flirting with the waitress, but he obviously still views women as objects for him to fuck. Albie loves his own self righteousness but fails to see how he views himself as a white knight protecting women that are mere victims of an oppressed system. And he can't comprehend that a woman like Portia isn't going to be into him just because he is attractive and says all the right things. He's just a further evolution of his father and grandfather. It's the same reason while being a highly educated intelligent person, he completely misses that the sex worker is a sex worker. And now he's being very obviously duped by the fake pimp Lucia brought in. She can easily manipulate him because she knows they are all narcissists and view every interaction they have with females as a means to an end.
I disagree with characterizing Albie as an asshole. He definitely over corrects and is super awkward and naive, but I don’t think he’s insincere, even if it comes off poorly. I also think he easily comprehended that Portia was more into Jack because that type of thing has probably happened to him before given his awkwardness. It’s not like he reacted in some asshole, incel way.
They pretty much said it but they are all just products of their upbringing. The show proves what monumental effect parents have on their children.
I’m with you man. I feel like his desire to be better than his male role modes has caused him to become a bit of a caricature. I also think that’s the point of his character. in the end though when it comes to Albie his character exists in a show that asks you to accept the unlikable characters it presents you and he stills comes off as unlikable
I know I’m probably just coming off as a bitchy complainer but I just loathe the scenes with Albie in it. I’m super anti-awk when it comes to media (to the point I despise the meet the parents franchise and couldn’t finish uncut gems) but white lotus has gone a long way to curing that affliction and I still just wish Albie were done differently
How on earth can you sit through any scene with Aubrey Plaza? They are the most awkward scenes I have ever watched in my life. Props to her for crushing her role.
I feel like for the most part there’s a human balance in this show that cuts the awkwardness. Albies self righteousness kills that for me
Albie finally gets with the assistant and she wants him to be rougher then he accidentally kills her.
- anyone else starting to see things in the intro that are happening in the show? Rewatching the beginning of ep1 -daphne is completely alone. Chair next to her is empty with towel rolled up like albie had waiting for Portia. Has she been alone yet? -daphne is wearing a starfish bathing suit. Valentina gives the other hotel employee a starfish broach -daphne says “you are going to die, they are going to have to drag you out of here” -the legs of the body look white and skinny -Rocco says “a guest has drowned” and “other guests been killed” -daphne is just kind of standing on the beach. She doesn’t seem overly sad. my guess: Valentina is involved with the drowning. Her reaction to that is “the ocean is not hotel property” and seems more concerned with the inconvenience than a person dying. She is not aware of the others. Also, I am thinking maybe Mia is the one who drowns and makes Lucia’s line about all whores getting what they deserve end up coming true lucia snaps and kills the others because she brought Mia into this
He’s definitely tough to watch in the scene with women. I find his self righteousness towards his grandpa and dad was understated to start and then once he hooks up with Lucia it gets worse. Almost like he thinks he’s hot shit. The best part is the underlying joke that his dad hooked up with her first.
I feel like Albie is a good representation of a type of guy who graduated college in the last 5 years or so
Yes, it's weird to me that people think guys like Albie don't exist. It's just nice guy syndrome. Obviously nice guys are flawed, and it is cringey to watch someone who is acting that way especially when you know how the person on the other side feels. That's the big difference here is that we know who his two love interests are and what they think of his nice guy behavior, so it makes it worse than if it was nice guy with nice girl. I have no issue with him on the screen. It's just a different type of cringe. They all are uncomfortable in different ways and that is the brilliance of the show how they are able to tie in all the cringe's while hammering home the themes of privilege.
