EXPLAIN THIS TO ME LIKE I'M 5: I've been wanting to put a rom or root on my HTC Amaze. It's never been fucked with because I was scared I'd fuck shit up. I've jailbroken a lot of iPhones, how different is it to do a rom on an android. Is it better for me to root or do a rom? Will I lose all of my apps, music, contacts/pictures? Also, Paranoid Android looks really cool, is that one of the best roms to run? Is there a better root to run? Which is easier? Last thing, what kind of differences can I expect? Any speed increases, less lagging, etc?
Do you put your phone on airplane mode at night? If not, how do you get that flat line? I average about the same time on my GN w/WiFi using Franco and AOKP (although I plan switching ROMs in the near future). If I am on 3G, my battery life is nowhere near that good though.
Nope. I just use wifi and close all my apps before I go to sleep. I leave everything else, such as sync, on.
I can go into more detail later, but start with this article and see if it clears some things up: http://theunlockr.com/2010/08/27/android-101-rooting-jailbreaking-and-unlocking/ Also, think about what you would like to change on your device. What can't you do now that you would like to be able to do? That can go a long way in seeing if rooting is enough for you or if you need to go all the way with rooting/custom recovery/roms/kernels.
AT&T should have shipped out today and tomorrow for delivery on 6/21, T-Mobile is available in stores on 6/21 and Verizon ships next month.
I read the article. It explained some stuff but not necessarily everything I needed. I'm not looking to do anything crazy just set up home screen differently, overclock processor speed, fuck with the notifications, improve speed. So what do you think I should do?
I know this is going to sound like a simple fix, and I'm not trying to belittle your request, but have you tried a new launcher? If you're just looking make things run smoother and change the look of your home screens, a launcher can accomplish this without rooting. Also, the gains from overclocking your processor would in all likely hood be very similar to those attained by using a different launcher (unless you do a lot of 3D gaming). LifeHacker recently published an article on the best launchers, it is here: http://lifehacker.com/5918906/five-best-android-launchers Now, if you've already tried a new launcher or install one and find you want more we can S-Off your phone (unlock the bootloader), root it, and throw a stable but robust rom such as CM9 on it. However, in the reading I've done over the past 30 minutes or so this does not seem like an easy process compared to other phones.
Alright, ill read the article and see what I think. I just upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich and its working a little better but also added a shit ton of new apps ill never use. Also, since the update Twitter won't load nor will it allow me to update or delete. I appreciate it, ill read the article and message you once I figure it all out and understand it better. Thanks again man.
Oh you got the ICS update? I didn't know that was out for the Amaze (granted I don't keep up with that phone). In that case I would recommend trying Nova Launcher. It's the one I personally use. Also, one of the cool features in ICS is that you can disable any apps you don't want. So for all the new apps you don't want you can just go into Settings->Apps->All->(Whatever app you don't want). Once there hit "Force Stop" if it's running and then "Disable". Hope that helps!
What's everyone's favorite contacts manager? My contacts are out of control this point. Several gmail accounts, an exchange account, twitter and haxsync to import facebook details on my galaxy nexus. At this point, my shit is a jumbled mess
I keep mine all up to date in my exchange account for work and periodically export it to the SD and delete all my gmail contacts, then import the file from the SD to gmail. Huge pain in the ass and there's got to be a better way to do it. Still bullshit that facebook doesn't work seamlessly with all contacts for their profile pics and other info.
gmail holds my contacts and htc seems to manage linking all of the twitters/fb account pictures. as long as i have an HTC android phone
Meet someone you haven't seen in a while. "Hey, let me get your number." Add contact, hit save. No idea which one of the 4 email addresses or outlook contact lists it was saved under. Fucking rage. How hard would it be to have the option of auto sync all contacts? Change it on your outlook at work and it's auto updated on all gmail contacts. Help me help you Android.
so Sprint has delayed the 32gb S3's til the 28th, but said the 16GB preorders should still be good to go on the 21st. Samsung has really put all the carriers in a lurch with this launch. http://community.sprint.com/baw/com...6/19/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-availability-update
And T-Mobile has decided to price their S3 at $80 more then everyone else AFTER rebate. In addition only select markets will have the phone on Thursday with everyone else having to wait till the next week. Mobile companies are run by idiots.
any music player i should download for an App that also is on the computer. wasnt a fan of double twist when i had it in the past
Why not use Google Music? If all your music is in iTunes, just download the Music Manager (http://music.google.com), let it sync up to the cloud, and listen from there. Also, the music manager will automatically upload anything new you add (even podcasts) so you never have to worry about syncing. You can also pin your favorite albums, or just what you're listening to currently, and have them download locally on the device to save battery. This is what I do and it works great.
when Google Music came out there was some concern about pirated music and the service, so I didn't bother. Audiogalaxy lets me stream from my desktop at home, so I just leave it on and have everything available on my phone. Now that it's been out for a while, have there been issues with pirated music and Google's service? I don't even know if I'd change since I'm pretty happy with Audiogalaxy, but other options are always nice.
And if you use Chrome as your browser, add the Music Plus for Google Play Music app to your Chrome extensions.
huge fan and convert to google music. i have only bought a few albums on itunes, but they sync'ed up perfectly and I listen to them on my android fine. Google music store purchases are 320KBPS and I think itunes are still 256 kbps. Amazon is 256 kbps.
also, i routinely listen to my music on the host pc via the google music website as it doesn't chug nearly as much memory as WMP
Hardrive crashed and I lost all My music so I'm re torrance a a lot of it. I haven't even downloaded iTunes. Google music sounds good but why happens if I'm driving in an area without phone service can I save the music to my sd card through google music. I'll have a 32 gig with 16 internal on the galaxy s3. Wish I would have never left android. Fools me once apple shame on me. Fool me twice. Well you won't fool me again.
Google Music caches your most listen to music on your SD card. Also, you can pin songs, albums, or a whole artist's library to be downloaded to the SD card. For example, every time one of my podcasts is uploaded to Google Music, it is automatically downloaded to my phone since I listen to these while I drive and cell service can be spotty in rural South Carolina.
i hate road runner's upload speed. it's been 16 hours and hasn't even gotten 1000 songs uploaded to google music.
Next Google phones, and if I wasn't looking for a phone now and hoping on board with the S3 I'd be very interested in the rumored Droid Razor Maxx HD from Verizon coming out sometime this year.
SwiftKey 3 was released today. I've been using the beta for a while and it is amazing. I normally hate custom keyboards for various reasons, but this one is just perfect. It is also on sale today for $1.99. Here is an article about the release http://www.androidcentral.com/swift...s-developers-also-announce-swiftkey-healtcare Also, here is the changelog:
Wirefly has the SGSIII for $149 for sprint customers (new and upgrades) watch out, they generally dont have as much launch supply and you might wait a few extra days.
wirefly already pushed it back to 6/28 and I'd guess it will be even later than that since most carrier stores don't even have phones yet and are looking towards 6/28 as the day to get them. Still not sure wtf is going on with BB (looking more like it will also be next week for them). I should have just ordered through sprint instead of trying to get a 50.00 GC from BB that I'll just end up giving away since I never shop there.
SwiftKey is the best keyboard I have used, and my first app recommendation to any new Android user I come across. It is definitely worth $2. I am not too thrilled about the changes but I will probably get used to them at some point.
use it against the cost of the phone. You still have to pay tax, but they are supposed to let you apply to that purchase.
just bought swiftkey. it looks great, but i thought it was a swipe based keyboard. I now have like 3 or 4 keyboards. i like swype the best, but the look of swiftkey the most.
Det. Frank Bullitt I saw in the "post a pic of your most recent purchase" thread that you bought some Beats headphones for iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and the controls didn't work. Try using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.jays.headsetcontrol I use some Klipsch S4i's which are made for Apple products and they work great with this app.
* the controls do work on android but i dont own any iOS products to see if they do/dont work on iOS. idk. I mentioned a pair of adidas/sennheiser earbuds made for iOS, so if i get those, ill make sure to check out the above app.
