This show was about the journey, not the destination (as cliche as it sounds). Liked it, didnt love it. Glad I watched it though. Most importantly, Im glad there was a payoff to the kiss. It really drove me nuts, and thought it was completely retarded storytelling at the time. Im most happy it turned out to be not as silly as it first appeared.
But now after thinking about it for 5 minutes it's still a bit irksome. What's her motivation to put her reputation and career on the line to ruin herself just for him, who she barely knows.
I'm okay with the kiss now that I know the purpose was to get Stone to do the closing statement, which I enjoyed. What I'm not okay with is her doubling down and smuggling in drugs for him. That was fucking stupid.
but that wasn't her motivation. it was a stupid plot device to get to that point, but an awful character choice. it was, along with the drug smuggling, just stupid
also, i didn't see this discussed in the thread, but may have missed it. given where we left off, i wouldn't be shocked to see season 2 http://www.vulture.com/2016/07/hbo-night-of-might-get-a-season-two.html edit: just read the link. that's a bit different than the discussion i saw on twitter and on vulture (the very same site that linked me there). so idk
That wasn't premeditated. She's just an idiot. A hung jury ending was great actually. Best part of the season for me was the jury foreman putting the Judge in his place. And lol at the Prosecutor withholding exculpatory evidence. Court scenes were awful.
Turturro's speech was probably the best part of the series, but I was disappointed in the finale and the show overall. I really hope there isn't a second season.
The attorney sneaking in drugs was dumb. I liked the show overall - but that added nothing, and took away a lot.
The tattoos shouldn't bug me as much as they did, but they did. I couldn't get over it. Just seems so pointless.
yeah that was a little overkill also, the saved head, and crack would've accomplished the same thing as a plot device... the neck tat was too much.
It gave Stone the ability to tell him that he shouldn't have gotten it on the jury side. It's a show about how appearance and perception in the criminal justice system.
It wasn't even a stupid plot device. The only reason it was there is because it was part of the original BBC series. Should have been cut entirely imo. If the show wanted Stone to do the closing statement, they should have played it as a strategic decision. It happens all the time.
As for the show itself. As soon as it shifted to the courtroom, the show fell off. Was hastily done with not a lot of realism. Lot of little things that completely unrealistic. EX. the court reporter using a stenograph from 1980 that printed out on receipt paper as she typed. I doubt you would find a single attorney who has seen one of those actually be used in recent memory. By the end, I cared more about what happened to the cat than I did about Naz or who killed the girl.
the fact that the investigator nor the prosecutor ever bothered to look at bank or phone records is just stupid. first episode may be the best episode of television i have ever seen. show went downhill fast. only redeeming quality was stone's character and his redemption.
The show was artfully done and the scenes held great tension, but the final episode revealed some major flaws with the plot.
It needs 1 more episode. Turn the attention to the cops new investigation and Naz's new life doing crack and fucking Chandra. Then set up a season 2. actually, I like that idea.
I'm assuming the cat was supposed to be symbolic. A second chance for criminals or forgotten defendants. Or a giant plug for animal shelters.
I loved the show and thought the ending was solid as well. Only thing that really bothered me was the kissing shit.
Damn, I'm surprised by the negative reactions, as I really liked it (watched the first few episodes twice to make sure i didn't miss anything crucial, which in the long run was completely unnecessary). There were some flaws but overalls believe the show presented its intended message well.
To me the character arc of Nas was uninspiring but I enjoyed the show more as an insight to the justice system. I like the lack of closure actually. Box, Bodie, and Freddy made the show for me. Not as high on Torturro as others
actually this was the only good part of the episode. love bodie and him on the stand was classic wire bodie
The 1st episode was fantastic and set expectations very high. The rest of the series was a let down compared to episode 1 and that definitely skews perception imo. They also had a number of unforced errors that needlessly made the show worse like the prison tattoos, the kiss scene and the lawyer smuggling drugs for him. They also used about 1/8 of their time showing Stone's feet but completely ignored the actual investigation and trial for much of the season which is poor use of a limited resource (time). The season was solid but could have been far better.
I liked the show a lot. After I was able to get over the fact that it wasn't a whodunnit. I'd watch another season.
Yea I dunno maybe I'm just easy to please but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I guess I don't get as upset as others when things don't go exactly as how I thought they should...I'm not the director
Plot was weak at times but I still enjoyed the show overall. There were some strong characters and acting performances that salvaged it. Could have been better though
The kiss was stupid but that was kind of the whole point. It's not like that's something that's completely unheard of in real life.
