The ship Han claims to have in the first Sabaac game is the model of the Ghost in Star Wars Rebels

Not just the script, the direction was really flat too.

But Ron Howard has always been like that. His movies are rarely visually stunning.

TBH, just making something that wasn't a disaster is a huge win considering the circumstances.

Poor pacing and editing, lousy cinematography too. Kept waiting for it to get better. It didn't. Whole film felt like it was cobbled together, as if they tried to make the best of a mess when faced with the Memorial Day deadline.

not seeing Solo until Sunday morning, but the response in here so far is about what I expected. Think I'll have fun with it, anyway, because I'm more and more liking the stories told in the Star Wars universe that aren't BIG DEAL events.

Does the Boba Fett announcement mean all that Obi Wan buzz was off again? Could Obi Wan somehow appear in the Boba movie?

    THIS.

Chewie was my favorite part. More Chewbacca personality than in any other film.

    I really really enjoyed it.

    Saw Solo.

    Thoughts:
    1. The plot was a little bland, but considering Ron Howard reshot 70 percent of the movie I could say I've seen worse.
    2. I really liked the sepia color palette they used throughout the film. Rarely did we see any vibrant colors, which worked. It really resonated with the gritty, rough landscape Han came from.
    3. Lando's L3 droid did absolutely nothing for me. Maybe it paid off by uploading her hard drive into the system.
    4. Donald Glover was an awesome Lando, and I thought Alden Ehrenreich was a really good Han Solo. Look, it would take an Oscar-worthy performance for any actor to have all us giving a standing ovation for their performance of Han Solo. Enrenreich did very well.
    5. The parsec run sequence was really cool, and I almost shed a tear when Chewie sat into the co-pilot's seat with Han parallel to him — also, they played John Williams' 'Asteroid Field' from TESB which was awesome.
    6. I would have liked to have seen Michael K. Williams as the antagonist, but Paul Bettany was ok. That role didn't really blow me away.
    7. Maybe it was my theater, but a lot of comedy didn't connect with anyone in the audience. Maybe a couple of times, but some of it was forced.
    8. I thought the third act was somewhat ordinary and weak. The standoff with Beckett and Han on the beach was ok, but Han shot first.
    9. What was the point of Darth Maul? Really cool to see him again in that scenario, and with the look from the Rebels series, but Han's story has so many awesome characters that you didn't need him.
    10. To add No. 9, I was going to say the Solo sequel could have a real Dark Knight tone with Jabba, Boba Fett and others, but Maul kind of confuses things.
    11. Good movie, wasn't blown away, but good time and would recommend to someone to see.

I got a very loud "What the fuck?" from someone in my crowd when Maul appeared.

I'm glad the movies finally acknowledged something significant that happened in Clone Wars/Rebels and don't give a shit if people were confused

I was really hoping Ron Howard would have made something great out of this, and I respect that it wasn't a total bomb, but I was bigly disappointed. The editing was horseshit, just like TLJ, I felt like there were 8 different spots where the movie should have/could have ended. I was pretty much done when they got to the refining planet. Merida from Brave (was she supposed to be Beckett's kid?) going on a monologue about people getting their tongues cut out or something, bla bla bla.

There were redeeming things. The huge space monster thing was cool. Maul was cool (but when he put the lightsaber close to his face, it looked like his skin was softening and transforming into someone else? I hope if an Obi-Wan movie happens that they face off). Qi'ra choice to ascend to be a criminal boss bitch was cool, although her betrayal of Voss was predictable. Alden and Donald did respectable jobs for their characters, they didn't take me out of it.

I'm just underwhelmed and I don't want to rewatch it. 5 out of 10 perhaps.

fellow rebels watchers, correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t obi wan have no idea Maul was alive until just before their rematch? Therefore another fight with him in the obi wan movie would be impossible.

Yeah a big part of that arc in rebels is Maul discovering Kenobi is alive and looking for him. When he finds him they "fight" and it's over on seconds.

I don't see them retconning new canon

I loved it. Went in expecting little and was thoroughly enthralled. Loved the Bossk reference. I also enjoyed some history on Han’s father.

It is interesting seeing this story weave into Rebels.

Maul was fine. Woody was great.

I guess I went into it expecting fun and excitement. There were some peeps in our theater that definitely wanted Inception like plot and it just wasn’t ever going to be that.

It’s a movie about Han Solo. It’s not going to be complex. It’s going to have a Kansas City Shuffle or two, but nothing too crazy.

Might have been a case of differing expectations, but I enjoyed it more than TLJ.

Considering filling Ford's shoes might be one of the most difficult acting jobs in history, Ehrenreich did a great job IMO.

after qi'ra took off and han went to tatooine, I expected more of a brooding, sulking character. That was a misfire imo. Considering it's an origin story, Han should have been grumpier at the end.

    Overall thoughts

    - movie definitely felt a bit clunky at times and it reflected in the pacing; the story is Howard stuck to the script but the overall film feels like separate contained scenes put together like a puzzle piece moreso than a coherent narrative or story

    - the action pieces were damn good and that battle scene in the mud made me want a saving private ryan style SW film

    - it wasn’t as funny as I was expecting which was surprising given Kasdan; I chuckled a few times though, mostly at Han and Chewie interactions and some of the L3 stuff

    - Alden was surprisingly really good. He’s definitely got the chops and his chemistry with Emilia Clarke was believable.

    - I wouldn’t mind if we eventually get another Han and Chewie movie and perhaps more Qi’Ra. I’d assume Jabba would be in it and Boba Fett would be brought in assuming he’s getting his own movie as has been reported

    - DG was good as well but bordered on a BDW impression at times

    - woody was woody which was fine but Bettany surprised me with how effective he was

    - clone wars bit: Aurra Sing name drop when Lando said Beckett killed her so I guess that confirms she’s definitely dead, but hopefully Cad Bane is still out there

that was one of the worst fucking things to come out of the dark horse comics run. slipping him into a movie reeks of the star wars novels where they just drop a character in for a cameo like they're trying for anime style fanservice. fucking stupid.

Obviously some clunky editing and cutting together of scenes, but i haven’t felt that genuine sense of adventure in a SW film in some time

I think this movie would’ve been a better fit for JJ than a saga one

that's fine... I thought it gave Chewie more depth than any previous film had (though much of it was pre-Disney canon already). They are carnivores and he was starved and only fed deserters... a wookiee is gonna wookiee in that situation.
