I should have gone Larry Doby, but tried to out think it and think people wouldn’t pick Paige.

I posted this in the baseball history thread a while back, but black attendance in Cleveland was a real boost to the bottom line financially. African Americans were turning out to see these guys.

Larry Doby was the first black AL player. Then they signed 42 year old Satchel Paige.

On 8/3/48, they had 72,562 for a night game in old Municipal Stadium to see Paige. On 8/20/48, 78,382 came to see him. 86,288 attended Game 5 of the World Series.
