I just don't see how Loras' skill with a lance says anything about him in a one on one battle. all his acclaim was from how talented he was in the joust. Jaime said it was like the lance was part of his arm. in the melee at Bitterbridge (I think) he got housed by Brienne.
Jaqen would never allow himself to be put in such a position. A man would murder people and sneak out before the morning.
Lora's fought in the melee at Bitterbridge and finished 2nd to Big Shirley I mean Brienne. Thought he used a war hammer though
Yeah Brandon was the warrior. Ned was shy and quiet, surely not potato with a sword but there's nothing to suggest he's great. The closest evidence to him being good was surviving the TOJ and that was 7 on 3.
Brandon was the hot head, that doesn't mean he is the only one who knows how to fight. I'm sure they received the same training while growing up.
Ned and Robert were wards together. If Barristan the Bold calls you a good fighter, you can kill a flowery queer.
It was with a sword. In fact I have to re read it. Royce may have won 2v1 vs Ned and Rowdy Roddy Cassel.
I should clarify my point that I think Ned being average to above average with a sword I believe enhances his character, not detract from it.
No its not. So Drogo has to use a longsword instead of an arakhs? Robert (I know he's not in this) would need to use a sword and not a warhammer? I'm such a nerd
It wasn't in a real battle. It was just in the practice yard when Royce was visiting Winterfell. I just read some article, that is likely where jorge read about it. Just google Ned Stark vs Yohn Royce.
Actually, here is the article. http://sf-fantasy.suvudu.com/2011/05/eddard-stark-and-the-song-of-steel.html Cliffs on the article are that show Ned = top tier swordsman while book Ned was above average, but not elite. Luckily, Loras isn't elite with a sword either.
that article took every mention of Ned being good with the sword and discounted it while giving full credit to anything that denigrated him.. fwiw, I don't think Ned was great with a sword. I thought he was above average, but a very smart fighter. I just also don't think Loras' skills lie in one on one combat on foot.
I found the quote. I couldn't remember exactly which book it was so I had to kindle search a few of them "She could see him in the yard, a practice sword in hand, hammering her father to the ground and turning to defeat Ser Rodrik as well. " -Sansa So its debatable if it was 2v1. Thats what I had gathered though when I read it.
I'd also like to point out that that melee' at Renly's camp that Loras took home the silver behind Brienne was on horseback. There would be no horses in this 1 v 1 tournament.
Yeah, but what I'm implying is that Loras' skill on horse, which is evident in his jousting, was the reason he was able to get second in the melee. It's not b/c he is some badass in 1v1 fighting.
If by "sneak out before the morning" you mean "strut down the road like Vince McMahon" then a man agrees
I'm team ned, but I do want to point out this difference. In that season 1 scene with Jaime where he says something like "I don't fight in tournaments, because when I fight a man for real I don't want him to know what I can do" he actually says this "I don't fight in tournaments, because as someone who has seen the horrors of war, I find playing at war to be distasteful. I spend my time actually working on governing my lands, not knocking men off horses with a stick. Maybe when your older, you'll understand that."
My son is off warring, not playing at tourney (or something like that) Twas Catelyn's best line after 'these are the knights of summer and winter is coming'
