Again Loras maybe a better Swordsman, but you didn't mention that Loras was green/summer child against Ned. You have to remember, Ned was the second hand man leading the rebellion. He fucking destroyed Pyke. I think Ned wins.
yea but that was just a massacre, they ran them down from behind and nobody saw them coming. he also got his ass beat by Brienne in the melee. with a Lance and on a horse I think Loras would fuck up almost anyone, but standing and fighting one on one I think his lack of strength would hurt him.
Thats because I dont think it matters in that matchup. Ned is probably an excellent leader of men and brave but maybe not a top notch fighter while Loras was famous for his skills by 16.
Ned also came out on top against three of the best fighters in the history of Westeros at the Tower of Joy(granted he had the numbers). Ned didn't get much acclaim because he never fought in tournaments, but he could definitely handle himself.
Not saying he couldn't just that that was about 15 years before and Ned was never known as great. Loras was famous at 16 in a land before telephones and faxes and was known even in the north for his skills. That's true but we also saw him murk guardsmen after Renly died and he also fought in the Battle of Blackwater so he's not so green at this point in the story or at least he proved that he can fight for real. If they were close in skill I'd give Ned the nod due to experience but my thought is that Loras is far more skilled than Ned

When Selmy and Ned were chatting in season one, Selmy gave Ned serious props for his skills. Right after that Ned says that his dad told him that Selmy was the best he has ever seen with a sword. Ned also said his dad was rarely wrong when it came to judging that sort of thing. Loras book 4 or 5 spoiler Spoiler Also, Ned was never seriously (mortally?) injured, like Loras was when he besieged Storms End, or Dragonstone, whichever it was that he had to take down for Cercei to send help to stop the invading Iron Islanders.

That could be taken as Selmy being a gentleman. Also Spoiler I don't think that matters. Well actually it could matter in a way. Loras got burned to a crisp and even great fighters get murked (Rhaegar seemed like a great fighter and Robert killed him one on one). That could show that Loras is too hot headed and doesn't think things through which could give Ned an advantage though I defintely think Ned led the fight but that doesn't mean he was a world class fighter in any way. Robb led the fighting against the Lannisters but nobody thinks he was a great fighter either
Ned was a world class fighter, that's why Jaime wanted to kill him so much. It would be a huge feat for him, and he was all about pride at that time in the series.
I'd also like to point out that Ned is the only one with a Valyrian steel sword in that tournament, aside from Jon.

Jaime was talking shit to Ned pretty much the entire time Ned was in King's Landing. When they kidnapped Tyrion it finally gave him an excuse to start the fight. Then he was pissed at his guardsman for interfering with his fight with Ned when it finally happened.
