Pups are leaving this week. Really irritated with the rescue and probably won’t be fostering through them again, but gonna miss these guys
Our golden doodle has started getting seasonal alopecia. While it doesn’t have any health effects on her she looks absolutely ridiculous
When my wife signed up to foster them we were told they were already adopted and we just needed to take care of them until they got spayed/neutered. At one point they asked my wife for pictures and we thought it was just to update the adoptive families. 10 minutes later they post the pictures on social media saying they’re ready to be adopted and to send in applications. We also found out they were separated from their mom way too early and when we asked about it they gave a lame and dismissive response. They just seem really disorganized and getting any info out of them is like pulling teeth. We don’t want to complain or badmouth them to other people because they’re still doing a good thing, just really disappointing how they’ve handled everything. We’re down to one pup now and can’t believe they haven’t found him a forever home yet. this is also our first time fostering, so we have nothing to really compare it to and this may just be how it typically goes. This is the rescue we got Sully from, and it was really well run and organized, it the girl who ran it then left to start her own rescue so I’m sure that has something to do with it.
Interesting, that is pretty odd with telling you they were already adopted... it could have been they had apps fall through but it doesn't sound likely. As far as there being one left and the time it takes for adoption now, I don't think you can pin that on the rescue. I can't even begin to tell you how badly applications have fallen off in the last 12 months, it's insane, even for puppies. Back in the day (pre-pandemic and of course during it) you couldn't keep puppies past their surgery at 8 weeks, they were snapped up as soon they hit the website. Now, good luck finding any apps at all, even if they are crap that you would never rent to. We had a litter of four toward the end of last year, beautiful dogs, they were on the website for a week or so and got almost no interest, we took them to an event and two ended up getting adopted but most of the apps were for just two of them and the folks didn't want the others, so they ended up being around for a few more weeks after that. It is rough out there trying to find good adopters, and 10x worse trying to get good fosters and donations.
Yea, didn’t mean to make it sound like it was the rescue’s fault the pup hadn’t been adopted. More like “how can no one want this puppy??” We think the original foster just lost her mind and told the rescue they needed to go, so the rescue said whatever they needed to say to find the pups new fosters. It was a litter of 11 pups and after having 3 for a few weeks we don’t really blame her lol.
We also live in Charleston which seems like an extremely dog friendly city so we’re just kind of surprised it’s taking this long to find him a home.
gotcha, yeah I wonder that too, people just don't have the money or mental bandwidth these days it seems. As for the foster losing her mind, yeah they tend to do that. It's incredible to me how many fosters do that, 11 puppies (or any number really) are tough to manage so I get the stress, but I've had fosters call in the middle of the night and demand the dogs be moved asap. People involved in rescue obviously need big hearts, but with that comes big emotions that are typically very close to the surface, and that can lead to some very interesting and upsetting conclusions.
70lb dog tried to knock me over by running full speed and jumping into my backside. I laughed at her. Two minutes later she upped the ante and full on bit me. Never been so close to punching a dog.
Daughter turns two next week, so me and the wife decided to get her a pup, as our German Shepherd is getting older Meet Lando(can’t get any of the better pics to work)
After one day, and 3 hours of sleep, we love him Pros: -Generally a good boy, a lot of fun and energy but without being crazy -Peed and pooped outside for the first time 15 hours after getting him -Generally slept through the night but obviously woke up every ~2.5 hours or so to take him outside (con is twice I would stand outside with him for 5-7 minutes then he'd pee as soon as we'd get back inside) -Good eater -No issues on the drive back at all, just slept like a baby in the car with no motion sickness Cons: -Absolutely hates the crate. Assume this is all to almost all dogs but we haven't been able to keep him in there more than 10-15 minutes and hate rewarding yelping, but we just melt and take him out after 15 minutes -We bought him this nice see-through play pen but he keeps bumping his head on the see-through glass and generally doesn't like it much -Given the point above, slept next to me near the couch vs. in the crate which we need to work on -His heartbeat beats incredibly fast; assume this is normal for a puppy but he'd be on the couch and I'd be worried his heart is working too hard
Is he an Aussie doodle? We rescued Otis a couple of years ago. If he is anything like Otis, have fun. Otis is insane but the sweetest dog too. Just non-stop energy and smart as shit. All he wants to do is play from sun up to sun down. Old pic of Otis below.
With the crating, you have to suck it up and keep doing it! We adopted a 1 year old rescue about 6 months ago. She cried, barked, ripped up everything in there with her (blankets), tried to chew her way out, and would destroy anything else she could reach from the inside. We were at our wits end but we didn’t have a choice but to power through. Fast forward to now, and she’s an absolute angel in her crate. Literally zero issues now.
Beautiful pup! He’s a bernedoodle so we were told he was calmer than many other doodle types and he’s even about 60/40 Bernese vs Poodle which we were told makes him even calmer. But I assume that’s like comparing between different raptor types lol. We’re still only 24 hours in but he’s chilling now and has been sleeping about 30 minutes after playing for about an hour and eating a meal. We heard sheepadoodles were the most energetic / wild but I’m sure you’d get a bunch of different answers on that
I love doodles so much; they have the best personalities. Love it even more that you can rescue them now pretty much at any given time. I would say that his temperament will change as he gets more comfortable, and his true personality will show more as you progress. Don’t give up on him, no matter how wild he may get. I don’t have any experience with bernedoodles, but I have had three other doodle mixes and they are all different but all so awesome in their me own ways. Just be consistent, don’t give in to the whining when he is in the crate, stick to a schedule/routine, and give him plenty of exercise/tasks and you’ll be fine. Enjoy!
The hardest thing for me was walks. He hated walking for about 2 months. Trying to tire his ass out and ended up on some nightmare 15 minute turned 45 minute “walks”/fights around the block. I learned later that I was trying way too much. 10 minutes of walk for every 2 months of age x2 or x3 a day is fine. Let him/her get comfortable with the leash in the house and on potty breaks. Just dropped my guy off a few hours ago for a long vacation for the first time and lol I miss him already. ETA: Labrador, not doodle.
I was just looking at Rover to have someone watch the dogs at our house. $55 for the first dog then $30 each additional dog.
anyone have recommendations for some sort of supplement for joint health? not exactly sure what i'm looking for but my lab is 10 now and getting just a little stiff occasionally. want to be proactive with something to help her for a bit.
Our last dog started getting stiff to the point she couldn't or wouldn't jump up on the couch Started giving her glucosamine and after a few days the difference was significant. She had one every day for the rest of her life and very rarely slowed down
We have a boutique dog place that sells a CBD treat for joints and mobility that we give our oldest dog.
My Dorgi tore her duclaw tonight, my fault for letting them get too long. It tore along the quick but doesn't appear to have damaged it nor is it bleeding. I trimmed as close to where it broke as I dared, and she's already on antibiotics for a suspected UTI so she should be good for any infections that might try to happen. Anything else I should be doing?
Wrap it to keep her from licking it. That's what the vet did to my last one when she tore it (lots of blood though).
Was taking my golden for a walk and she was having a great time, the kids at the park know her and always come up to pet her and such and she was loving it. Was walking back to my place and she just stopped. Her eyes glazed up and she wouldn't move. Had to have someone hold her while I got my car and take her to the emergency vet. She had a form of cancer with tumor on her spleen that ruptured and the cancer had already had spread to her liver. Apparently it is hard to detect in Goldens but is common and it is a death sentence. She went from being her super, happy energetic self with all the kids at the park to having to be put down within 2-3 hours. She was the sweetest girl and the shock of it is fucking me up
Seems more cosmetic than anything if I would remove any of them its the back ones just due to them having less of a chance at getting caught on something but it maybe more common up in Alaska with sled dogs
Splenic tumors are rarely if ever caught in time before rupturing. And once it ruptures you have a very short time to get them into surgery and even then its less than a 50/50 chance of them waking up. I’m sorry for your loss
We have a Bernadoodle, Trudy, she turns 1 on leap day. They’re the perfect family dog in my biased opinion. She’s great about mirroring whatever energy we’re putting out. They are Velcro to the one human they imprint on. More separation anxiety than flight risk. Gentle with young children. Only bark for a purpose. Counter surfing is an issue and she’s not the best on a leash. Good news is the leash can be optional when appropriate because they aren’t running away. Congrats on your new family member, they enhance your life more than we deserve. Also, it’s just a matter of time before your dog is sleeping next to you every night. I think there’s a direct correlation between intelligence and stubbornness, they know what they can and can’t get away with.
Puppy is doing well overall 10 days in. He's socialized with a few friends that have come over and is generally a very friendly, loving dog. He's everything I could have asked for and more. On the crate, he's actually slept three straight full nights in the crate only with minor whimpers (go to bed around 11 PM with a pee right before, 1:30 AM wakeup to pee, 4:00 AM wakeup to pee, 6:30 AM up for good). Issue is on potty training. He was making incredible strides until yesterday. We got him last Saturday and he pooped in the house for the first time since Monday yesterday. He's started peeing a lot again in the house - he was about 80/20 outside/inside from Monday-Saturday, then yesterday and today, he's been peeing all over the house. My wife thought we've been too loose with him during the day vs. crating him all day, but even today we had him in the crate about ~4-5 hours during the day and he's still been peeing a lot in house tonight. I'm sure it's gonna be a lot of ups and downs and we've had him for 10 days, we're just exhausted and kind of surprised by this picking up again
we called this phase “the puppy blues”. It’s humbling to stand outside in the rain holding an umbrella at 3 in the morning waiting for a puppy to go potty.
