Imagine losing a close match for the title of World Chess Champion and then they make you wear this shit the next day
A really ballsy play with less time on the clock. The reaction when Nepo realizes he's going to lose is pretty sad
Was vs a bot and it took me a minute to figure out how to save and share it but I think this will work https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/computer/1686324266477?tab=analysis Haven't had chance to play vs a human in a while. Being home with an almost two years old pretty much means I can't ever know I have blocks of undistracted time.
can't black just play b7? i would've thought forcing the trade on g2 would've been a better move but i suck at chess
Didn’t work for me but under options in the bottom left of the iOS app there’s copy PGN which should work
Want to check out the game but best I can figure, the bishop on e4 is defending the rook moving to a8. White moving his bishop to f5 forces the black bishop away

Not sure why it was deemed brilliant. I was basically just trying to take black's pawn and add another defender to my pawn on d7 knowing blacks bishop couldnt take my bishop there without causing a forced mate.
I'm not sure i follow this. what are the specific moves? White wins with Rook A8 as the board is currently set and he's trying to clear that A1-H8 diagonal. But as far as I can tell, Bishop F5 allows black to put their Bishop on F3 or B7 (and D5, though that one would get complicated). In response to this Bishop F5, black could play Bishop F3 and threaten a Queen exchange on C1 and then winning the white Rook on G1 with something like Bishop F3, Bishop G4, Queen C1 check, Queen takes C1, Rook takes C1 check, King D2, Rook takes G1. White has compensation with the Bishop on F3 but the Pawn on D7 is no longer protected and the checkmate threat is gone. But I'm not actually good at chess so it's likely i'm missing something here.
this is the best move but you’ve won a pawn and now can move your rook on g1 into the game. They are in a tough spot. That king is entombed there and it’s going to be really hard to get that pawn off of the 7th rank without losing. If they mess up and take your bishop instead of moving back it’s mate in 2
Magnus not playing in the world championships so he can just get drunk with his friends and crush people on twitch will never not be funny to me
I mean, I can’t fault the guy for that shit at all. The level of fatigue endured to play at that level for that many years is absurd.
I just watched Magnus win 9 rapid games in a row against grandmasters and I’m more sure than ever that hans nieman was cheating
It’s wild that Magnus has now gotten dismantled by Hikaru on the biggest stage in both bullet and rapid over the past 6 months or so. It’s crazy how good Hikaru is at speed chess. Of course these are all online matches, and Magnus is still the goat, but it’s been almost shocking listening to some of these post match interviews from Magnus after he plays Hikaru. I think he clearly thought of Hikaru as kind of joke before and now Hikaru is probably the only player that motivates him.
That’s Hikaru’s wheelhouse. Hikaru doesn’t have any interest in studying anymore, because he’s making a decent chunk of change with his videos. He’s incredibly adept at processing moves at rapid speed and working within those set time limits. It also revolves around an entirely different set of stratagem. If Magnus retired and felt like fucking off, I have no doubt he’d routinely wreck Hikaru.
I don’t think this take is remotely fair. Hikaru obviously still studies and is currently the #2 rated classical player in the world. That wouldn’t even be possible if Hikaru just didn’t study. Not bad for being streamer and retired chess player though. As for Magnus, he’s clearly not been trying to stay at the top of his game in classical, and plays a ton more speed chess now. But he’s just simply not as good at this format as Hikaru is. Yes, it’s Hikaru’s wheelhouse, but that’s like saying “clay is Nadal’s wheelhouse.” He’s simply the best speed chess player of all time, and Magnus could probably get to that level sure, but he still has to prove it.
Maybe if anything else was comparative to classical time format. I don’t think anyone would argue that bullet or even blitz is anything more but novelty chess. It’s cute that Hikaru can pre-move a bunch of shit playing online, but it’s utterly meaningless. It’s not even comparable to even just basic OTB play.
I don't get this train of thought. Classical chess is fucked because all of these super GMs, with that amount of time, are nearly computers. But limit their time and you test their human-ness and instincts. Way more entertaining, too.
Idk if bullet is all that entertaining. Rapid and blitz definitely the best formats. I watched a lot of the bullet championship. 90% of the time I didn’t have the ability to process the position or understand the tactics. Announcers are as good as possible and even still it was super tough.
I like watching classical chess because the announcers will be like, he won the pawn and the game is over. I’m thinking what the hell is going on out there
chess makes no sense. I’ll be on a roll, hit a new high. Win some games, lose some games, then lose like 14 in a row and drop my elo to back where I was. Then randomly I’ll win like 8 in a row just as I’m about to quit the game
I’ve been hovering some where between 530 and 580 for my ELO rating. Got as low as the 300s before I started doing better
My other favorite thing is why Magnus or some GM will just randomly move their king and I’m thinking wtf. Then 13 moves later it’s in exactly the right spot to defend a key square. They are playing a different game than I am
Feels like every time I think I’m being smart by not castling or doing a weird King move, it ends up being on the worst possible square 10 moves later.
This is how I kind of view it too. Bullet and blitz might be a better test of actual chess acumen these days given that classical chess is now all about memorizing engine lines. Or having your assistants spending months analyzing engine moves trying to find weird lines that might still be playable, but could confuse your opponent. Of course, playing over the internet on computers, having or not having time increment, and being able premove all can create their own skill gap. It’s true that Magnus probably isn’t as good at premoving and not having mouse slips in time scrambles, and those are kind of “non-chess” advantages Hikaru has over him. But also, Hikaru is the current Fischer Random Chess (aka Chess960) World Champion. Magnus and Ian both competed, Hikaru beat Ian in the finals (who had earlier defeated Magnusin the semis). This format was created by Bobby Fischer to basically remove the whole “memorize a bunch of computer lines to gain an advantage in the opening” component. It also might be a more pure test of actual chess knowledge and creativity. (I should also note that Magnus defeated Hikaru in an exhibition Chess960 match back in 2018, and also Wesley So crushed Magnus 13.5 - 2.5 in the first inaugural Chess960 World Championship in 2019.) And again, Hikaru is still the current 2nd highest rated Elo classical player anyway! So basically, it’s not completely fair to be totally dismissive of Hikaru, as unlikeable as he is sometimes. He does a good job playing the villain, but still the guy is probably the 2nd best all-around chess talent in the world and he very well might actually be better than Magnus will ever be in some formats, as crazy as that is. And does all this while he fucks around on Twitch all day watching episodes of Survivor and doing blitz speed runs to 3000 Elo while blundering his Queen on purpose and playing the Bongcloud.
Lol that line was wild. “We’re simply better at chess than the others so we can make good moves more quickly.” I was honestly kind of blown away he included Hikaru in that sentiment. Magnus has done like a full 180 on Hikaru over the last 18 months or so.
Similar to what you posted about above, Hikaru just seems to be on a tear. Outside the championships he has won, he did come in third at the candidates which is no small feat and a draw away in the last game against Ding for playing for the classical title. Just seems so much more relaxed as a full time streamer and as he has said it just takes off the pressure from making a living out of it. Compared to the rest of the Super GMs, outside Magnus, and maybe a few others these tournaments are huge for income.
This is why chess is so intriguing/frustrating for me. In every other sport, hobby, game, discipline or whatever that I've ever played, I've gotten significantly better just by playing. With chess, it doesn't seem to work that way. No matter how many games I play, if one of the quick and easy strategies doesn't work im just lost. I'll win 10 in a row then lose 10 in a row in hilarious fashion.
To be fair, that’s just everything evening out with your level of play. Without any sort of study/doing puzzles you’ve pretty much reached where you’re going to consistently hover at.
The estimated 14 people watching the dedicated driver feeds for Bottas or Zhou might see Hikaru’s name!
Me scoring a victory against someone who was almost 130 points higher than me was a good way to start the day.
