per wiki Pate was a novice studying to become a maester at the Citadel in Oldtown. He was also a patron of the Quill and Tankard inn, and was in love with the innkeeper's daughter, Rosey. With his studies not proceeding well, Pate agreed to steal a key that would open every door in the Citadel for a man known as 'the alchemist' in return for money. Having performed this service, Pate was then killed by the alchemist, who expressed regret for the necessity. As he died, Pate saw the man take on his own appearance. The imposter then replaced him in the Citadel. Later, the 'fake Pate' was revealed to be in the service of Archmaester Marwyn and an associate of Alleras the Sphinx, although it is unknown if they knew of his true identity.
Do you buy it? Westers.org Spoiler the theory is that alleras is a she in disguise and is one of the sand snakes of dorne named sarella (anagram for alleras)
It has to be the case, it is almost too obvious though with Alleras being Sarella backwards. I just finished reading AFFC so with all the details fresh in my head it matches up so perfectly (a dornish father, a summer island trader for a mother, proficient with some weapon like all of the ther sand snakes mentioned) it has to be her disguised as a man. I did totally miss it the first time through however.
haven't read any of the thread but I've really been struggling to consistently read this one. Roughly half way through no Tyrion, no Bran, hardly any night's watch, no Daenerys, barely any Arya, etc. The only storylines that have really been interesting to me at all have been Brienne's and the Iron Islands. Cersei is a bitch, Jamie mostly does nothing. Hoping this shit picks up soon but will truck through it regardless.
can you refresh my memory on the Gravedigger? what was this about, I know the hound is missing. I remember the monk guy on the island saying he buried him, not buying it nvm, read some tower of the hand, got it now.
if memory serves...the Elder brother suggested that "The Hound" was a facet of Clegane's psyche and that is what died and what's left of Sandor joined the Quiet Isle Monks.
This. And the gravedigger being extremely large, a novice, walked with a limp, good with the dogs, etc
Okay this shit is really starting to get good. Spoiler Brienne just got attacked at the crossroads by Biter, Jaime just freed Edmure, and Sam knows about Daenrys
I'm probably 8 or so chapters into ADWD and I keep getting deja vu. Because the beginning of it is the same time as a AFFC you keep reading about things you already know about from Crows. So Sam recalls having some conversation with Jon before he left and then in Dragons you see the actual conversation happen. I keep thinking haven't I already read this?
in hindsight I really enjoyed the paranoia of Cersei causing her to make dozens of terrible decisions. Fuck that bitch edit: also loved Jaime telling her to fuck off
I have finished it the chapter. Nevermind I realized I'm still in the middle of the chapter. We shall discuss tomorrow.
If I know Martin like I think I do though that means bad things on the horizon for Jon Snow I'm assuming. Martin is the kind of asshole that would have Jon Snow somehow become King of Westeros and then have a space ship fly down and zap him with a laser and fly off. The end.
I just finished chapter 6 (the first sam chapter), and I dont know why everyone is hating on book I am really enjoying it.
It's just a change of pace from the other three, and the the POV's are centered on newer or unpopular characters. I really did enjoy the last quarter of the book, though.
It is a change of pace, but I like where everything is going. I guess it just is the worst by default
the Victarion chapter titled The Reaver in this book might be the most badass chapter in all the books.
Just finished AFFC and have to agree the first 3/4ths of the book was slow compared to ASOS but the last hundred or so pages really finished strong.
Didn't think this was up for debate. Victarion You don't have the big three Dany, Tyrion, and Jon. Also you have a bunch of just awful characters and it's really only telling half the story. I just don't think the whole split was the best idea but I understand why he did it. You do have several good stories in it [my favorite being Arya and the kingsmoot storyline]. The book is good but it's a step below book 5 and book 1 so it's the worst book to me. Book 5 and 1 are very good though so it's not really a negative. Numbers are based on my rankings of the book 3 2 1/5 4
into Chapter 12 now of AFFC now... book's getting better but the Iron Island chapters are about as boring as Silas Marner. Still hate that book from high school.
About 120 pages in, no clue on chapter number but it was Tywin's funeral. Jesus I hate her, such a bitch who thinks everybody is out to get her (which is probably true).
Spoiler Just finished AFFC, I need to reread the sam chapter, but is Alleras the kid that said he was Pate? And is this Pate the same one that was the whipping boy? If that's not Alleras, can someone explain the theory of who he his?
this also Spoiler Alleras is Sarella Sand, she's mentioned in an Arianne chapter by Doran as "off playing her game"
The real Pate is dead. He was killed by someone with a hook nose and black curly hair who he called the alchemist.
I'm 140 pages in to this book and will read Cersei II tonight. I hope this book doesn't do what ASOS did and make me like another Lannister. I want to continue hating this bitch.
I'm about 400 pages into this book and have realized this will be the most difficult book by far to adapt to TV. Will be interesting to see all the showfags rage.
That makes sense. Otherwise it would almost be like starting a brand new series with all this focus on Dorne and the Iron Islands.
Wonder if they'll leave a lot of stuff out to make it easier to follow if they mix ADWD and AFFC. Having so many characters will be tough for a tv viewer to follow.
I planned on reading 3 chapters last night until I got stuck on a 25-page Brienne chapter and fell asleep while reading it, so needless to say I only got through one. Woke up pissed off that GRRM put me through that.
