I've seen talking heads at The Atlantic, NYT, etc. (who also fanned the flames and cheered on the Iraq war for years) say they need to get the National Guard out, like they're blood thirsty to redo Kent State. It's incredible how much the media is losing its fucking mind over students peacefully (I can't speak to anyone outside the campuses themselves) protesting for an extended period.
Agree. Atlantic is the one i lean on the most, and it has consistently maintained a tenor of israeli protectionism since 10/7.
I'm highly confident that deploying the national guard to campus protests has never in the scope of history ever been a good idea. At best, it doesn't help at all. It's the absolute dumbest idea, especially coming from people who presumably have some education on modern american history.
Plus, I have zero confidence in today's generation of rockers to write a banger like Ohio if it devolves into an historic tragedy.
This should solve things https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...house-speaker-columbia-student-gaza-protests/
We're talking some pretty tame protests too. In 1968, (for some really gross shit that Columbia was pulling btw both in regard to Vietnam and discriminatory housing towards neighbors in Harlem), student (SDS and SAS) protesters held hostage the dean of the university and held him for a week, barricaded the campus, and snuck the Grateful Dead onto the grounds for a free concert. Violence broke out in May of that year and a nypd cop got his back broken by a protester jumping out of a window.
The idea of a bunch of 18-28 year old National Guardsmen, some with an animosity towards the 'educated' 'elites', now put in a position of authority while probably scared and angry at the same time, sure seems like a cultural powder keg.
I think that's what the people calling for that want, not de-escalation Obviously deploying NYPD on their own students at Columbia completely backfired.
Biden makes the type of verbal gaffe he has for 40 years and its all the right will talk about no matter what. I am still waiting on Trump to put together a coherent thought but that's fine because he doesn't stutter.
Can I get some Cliff notes on what's going on at Columbia? It seems like some students are camping out in protest and people are losing their minds? I saw some non-students were doing the usual Nazi stuff but what's the big issue with the actual students just having a huge campout? What am I missing? Edit: sorry I should have read the thread
I think it's the first time the NYPD has been deployed on Columbia's campus since the Vietnam protest of the 1960s.
there are a lot of legitimate safety issues related to having people camp out on a campus that happens to be placed in the middle of a city of 15 million
lol the right wants to fire everyone employed by any level of education so of course they want the Columbia president fired
Would you like to enlighten me on the measures that campuses take to ensure student safety when there’s an event like a campout for basketball tickets and how that’s entirely comparable to an urban campus losing access control amidst a protest in which people (likely unaffiliated with the university) are harassing students?
"You can't do this, sleeping in a tent on the grass isn't safe!" is some bullshit excuse to not allow it and you're gobbling it up. If the campus is safe enough to go outside at night, it's safe enough for a group to sleep on the lawn. It's on the school to control access to their campus.
I expected more of a "foom, foom" Anyway zero doubt that bonker was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon
Headed to DC for my son’s class trip. I’m more than mildly interested to see what protests we may find.
Was there last week and it was interesting to see the class trips outside the WH next to the protests. These middle schoolers have no clue.
I was there in mid-February for a company conference, about 1 mi from the White House at the Marriott. I was a little shocked to only see one crazy person protesting and it was a guy dressed almost like a Russian Cossack that was holding a sign of a picture of a toddler and a QR code. Initially I thought it was just a normal "child abduction" Q-Anon adjacent thing, but then he started screaming that his brother's kid was kidnapped by his brother's inlaws and being raped and that we were bad people for ignoring him.
Maybe be tough on him on Israel because he won't interview?? Like something useful and not nonsensical
And I'm sure he knows the age stuff resonates with some people. Might as well run the Times like a tabloid
I think it's fucking hilarious that people get angry if like 1 protestor at a rally says they support Hamas and their actions.... WHEN WE LITERALLY HAVE PEOPLE HERE THAT FUCKING FLY THE CONFEDERATE FLAG Not just that when KKK members and Nazis walk the streets they're given police protection. What a dumb fucking country, you're a protected class if you're a white supremacist or a Nazis BUT DON'T YOU DARE PROTEST GENOCIDE
