Out of curiosity, do you think the situation needs to change? If so, what would you recommend?

I used to work with a gun nut who would tell me that he and the NRA are against a national registry for guns because "then they have a list of all the people who own guns and know right where to go when the time comes"

How fucking mental do you have to be to think that way?

There is a big problem that a 19yo, most likely autistic, kid has access to military grade weaponry, but the bigger problem is we have a shit ton of idiots in this country like the family in this article who think it’s ok/normal for someone like Cruz to possess them. “We made him keep them locked up“ Give me a fucking break, you idiot!

I'm going to indulge you for a minute, even though you are a fucking moron, because I'm bored.

While it is technically true that the government could use a national registry to collect all the guns, it would be fucking impossible to actually do. The mentality of "come and take them!" and "You can pry my guns from my cold dead hands" is far to prevalent among gun owners to make seizure easy. Gun seizures would turn into shootouts. It would require more than just local, state and ATF forces. Hey, you'd get called up and could finally see some action instead of just being a keyboard warrior! You'd get to fight against Americans who won't give up their guns. Cool, huh? Oh, you don't want to do that? That's not what you signed up for? That will be the same case for many, many others who would be forced into that situation.

Gun seizures are a complete non-starter and anyone who thinks it could even remotely happen is a fucking simpleton.

We had an article stating that this kid joined and trained with some alt-right group that admitted to giving him a WW2 rifle.

That’s a gut punch when thinking about what could have been done to prevent this: if the gave him a $300 milsurp no reason they wouldn’t give him a $300 AR.

9 million ARs out there (citation needed), plenty owned by shitheads wiling to give them over to other shitheads looking to die for the cause.

Toothpaste into the tube argument. I don’t know.

No federal agency could refrain from stepping on its own dick long enough to confiscate all the guns in America.

And this is why we won’t be able to actually ban guns in this country.

My fellow Democrats are going to puss out because it’s ‘too hard.’ We will just keep whining about it on the internet letting more people die by gun violence.

Again, I know you are mentally deficient, but here goes anyways: Banning guns and confiscating guns are two separate things. Banning the over the counter sale of a type of gun can and does work. You cannot go into a gun store and buy an Uzi, for example. You can buy them, but it requires ATF approval and a lot of tax $. Sure, there will still be millions of AR-15s and other assault Rifle style guns out on the street, but no new ones getting out there. If you stop the over the counter sales, close gun show loopholes, then it makes getting an AR-15 that much more difficult. Not impossible, but more difficult. Don't be fooled, American's are lazy as fuck, as a whole. Requiring extra steps to get an assault weapon style gun will make many give up trying to get one.

Maybe instead of calling others deficient, you could explain how you would create a registry if you’re not selling the weapon anymore?

Also, you want to create a registry of weapons that are illegal to own but not do anything about those people owning the weapon?

Just because I didn't include restrictions on individuals does not mean I do not support some of those as well.

You can start from zero with a registry, you know that, right? We just went 7 pages making fun of Saul for his bizarre understanding of registries.

If you're not an FFL dealer you can just sell to whoever at the show without a background check. it's bullshit that two tables right next to each other at a gun show don't have the same requirements for safety

How do gun rights advocates argue this? It seems common sense that an individual incapable of purchasing from an FFL (on account of the background check) should not simply be able to get on gunbroker.com or Craig’s list and buy the same item.

I must be missing something here. Seems as though you’re for background checks on firearm purchases or you’re not.

Yes, which is why you'd get like 90% approval to a plan where all change of ownership of weapons requires a background check, but to enforce this or monitor it you'd likely also need a registry.

The issue is that 10% against it are WILD and have tons of lobbying power.

I do think we have a problem. Like many things, I think this one doesn't have an answer. There is no fix to it. I think more progress would be seen from parenting than making changes to laws. Not raising completely fucked up kids due to neglect or just plain selfishness would be a start. I am absolutely positive I don't want the federal government doing anything. Those guys fuck EVERYTHING up.

I honestly think Dems could propose a bill that requires all sales to go through an FFL and get it passed. I think that reaching too far will get them nothing though.

The big NRA donors are manufacturers. What do they make on a re-sell? I think there is far too much public support on background checks for it not to pass. I doubt a bill with just background checks ever gets proposed though. It’ll have an assault weapon ban & mag restrictions tied to it. No way that passes.

I don’t know that public support is really any higher, but the issue seems to be more talked about. Kasich was on CNN saying it’s silly that people are allowed to sell guns to people that they don’t know without a background check. He was still arguing for the changes to be made at a state level instead of nationally, however. The former member of congress has quite a bit of disdain for the institution as it exists now.

This kinda reminds me of the events leading up to Kip Kinkel, shooter at Thurston shooting Springfield Oregon. I had a cousin who went to school there at the time.

He was found at school with a loaded handgun and was expelled. Only the handgun was confiscated by the police because it was used in a crime. His parents took all his other guns away, he then he stole them back, killed both of them and then went to the school and killed 2 and wounded 25 in the cafeteria.

In a note he left at his house he said: "My head just doesn't work right. God damn these VOICES inside my head. ... I have to kill people. I don't know why. ... I have no other choice."

Even if they pass FFL legislation, the loophole would be to sell the gun to a trust, then pass it down within that trust. It's what many people do around here with silencers and other accessories that are to be put out to individuals. That way it stays in the family and you won't have to give it up when you die.
