Those methods are less deadly than an AR-15 in the hands of someone that was trained in rifle shooting at the school he would later shoot up in a class funded by the NRA.

I understand that and understand your hate for NRA. Wasn't my point. Yes guns are the vehicle they use for these acts of violence and somehow we need to put an end to that. But doesn't change the fact the person is a lunatic. Measures have to be put into place to identify these kids that fit those profiles. How far we go with that? Who knows.

Should probably just let everybody have nukes then. If they want to commit mass murder, they’re gonna find a way.

Someone with mental illness is only as deadly as you allow them to be.

Everyone is more deadly with an AR-15 in their hands than without. The problem with school shootings isn’t mental illness - we’re legitimately never getting rid of that. The problem is the guns that allow a large number of bullets to be fired in a very short amount of time. That’s what needs to be eliminated - because it actually can be.

Watch this girl and tell me she doesn’t deserve you to fight for her safety. Watch her speak and tell me giving up is acceptable. Watch her and tell me that doing nothing isn’t completely letting her down.

I feel like its safe to say that one bullet can be enough to kill a person. obviously depends on where said bullet hits that person.

you legit equip almost anyone who wants it with a device that can kill 30 people or however big the mag is in a matter of seconds.

    Thats fucking stupid.

Will they? Or will some come to the conclusion that the juice isn't worth the squeeze? Part of the reason this happens is because getting guns is easy. Low maintenance, low cost (as far as effort), high reward as far as carnage. Going to the black market is much tougher, more time consuming and more dangerous. Making bombs is much tougher, more time consuming and more dangerous. Going around with a knife or a baseball bat is a lot less effective. Even using a conventional handgun or shotgun is less effective. It's opportunity cost. Burglars very rarely go into houses that are occupied in the middle of the day. Why is that? Because they want to maximize their efforts. If you make something hard enough then people are less willing to go through with it. And if that happens, that's a step in the right direction.

If you care, you fight. You don't take shitty half-measures and cry "woe is me."

I said this in other threads, but every older generation says stuff to this effect about younger generations. I'm not sure how legitimate it is on a macro scale.

For the 'its going to happen anyway' crowd; while that holds some validity, are we not at the point as sad as this is to say where 1 or 2 of these a year would be a major improvement over where we are now? We aren't going to completely eliminate it no matter what is done. Evil will always find a way. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't create measures to make it as hard as possible to do.

I was under the impression that bill had to do with people not being able to manage their finances was being referred to as a mental illness and therefore keeping people from getting straps

Short of banning all guns and going door to door to round up all the current ones out there it absolutely holds validity.

Of course not. It's not "just a" anything issue. I was pointing out the intellectual dishonesty of your dismissing it as being unrelated to the availability of guns when there have been significant technological advances facilitating mass shootings since the fifties and sixties.

Since the ban expired in 2004, there's been an explosion in the manufacture and sales of AR-15's and the like (and prices have gone down, making them more accessible). Over a million are being produced each year. They account for almost 20% of all gun purchases. Now, obviously a very, very small percentage of them is being used to kill people. An even smaller number is being used in mass shootings. But, most mass shootings involve that platform or similar. There's a reason for that -- they're wildly effective for that purpose.

With all that said, I am a gun owner and I have an AR-15. Would I give mine up if it saved one life? Absolutely. Do I think they should be banned altogether? No. But, I do think that it should be much, much harder to get and keep one. I've said it in here several times before, but I think that (1) the full NFA vetting process and wait period should be applied to anything that can hold more than six rounds; (2) all gun owners should be required to carry liability insurance for their weapons; and (3) there should be a national registry.

I dont think Australia had over 300 million guns to account for when they changed their gun laws.
Banning and rounding up every gun in the US would suit me fine. However Im realistic enough to know that is never going to happen. You could do that and still have a gun slip through the cracks and be used in a school shooting so im really not even sure why you're trying to argue there isn't some validity to the "it would still happen" stuff.

Some people use "it would still happen" as an excuse to do nothing. Others use "it would still happen" as an admission but say you still have to do everything you can to make it as hard as possible for it to happen.

Even if this was effective and stopped all school shootings are we cool with night clubs, concerts, churches, politicians on a baseball field being shot up?

I don’t know what the best steps to take to help, but let’s try something. At the very least make every sale go through an FFL dealer and have a registry- I don’t see how anyone can be opposed to that and if all it does is slow the flow of guns to domestic abusers and felons then wouldn’t that be a good start?
