rough first draft. if you guys have a chance to watch a bit please do so and hit me with those critiques and criticisms. definitely aware of the audio issues. Spoiler
finally got around to starting our strixhaven campaign tonight. one dude got crit and literally died. 5e is so not tuned for level 1 combat.
I’m a few episodes behind but that Thull fight has this group so spooked. Matt just presented them with 3 centaurs and they’re like, we need to run! This being the second fight in like 3 episodes where it’s clearly an encounter they can handle and people are trying to run. It almost cost them in the basement fight
i'm sure 6e and the vtt are going to be a whole lot of drama but i'll be really interested to see what the vtt would do for actual play.
ashton and i seem to have some similar health issues so i can relate to them but yeah, it's not a great character. the subclass i'm very interested in though. also, not only have they stopped dndbeyond ads but now they've switched to trying to say gm over dm.
Just started listening to CR, and I figured I’d just start at the beginning of campaign 3. Is that a reasonable place to start?
i think the general consensus is to start with c2 because it's the only truly complete product but c3 is a fine spot. there's a little timeline complexity there between c3/exu but that's also probably fine to ignore for now.
Very reasonable. You’ll miss some backstory of the planet/lore of the calamity/blah blah and not understand some ah ha! moments but overall you’ll be completely fine.
Detlef Schrempf this isn’t actually bad advice before C3. I’d say Calamity is a good watch/listen before C3. The miniseries takes places hundreds (thousands?) of years before C3 but does provide some framework of one character’s backstory and some background of some of the plot too. It’s also only a handful of episodes and is really enjoyable for as short as it is. there’s another miniseries that Odin here mentions, ExU, that gives backstory on Fearne, Dorian, and Orym, but it’s completely unnecessary to listen to in order to enjoy C3. It’s not early as good as Calamity either. but nothing is required to listen and enjoy C3 as a stand alone.
it’s fine to do that. C2 is the best campaign in my opinion. I’d say start there but you could start with 3 and when you catch up start 2 as you wait for new episodes to come out. That’s what I did with campaign 1
it's interesting cr has reached "watch order discussion" status. regardless, i think "best" is probably: lovm c2 + one shots exu prime c3 eps 1-18 exu kymal c3 eps 19-24 exu calamity c3 eps 25-current c1 + one shots sprinkle in various one shots along the way to keep a cleansed palate. exu prime+kymal aren't the best and maybe aren't required for c3, but i do think calamity is as close to required as possible for c3 but luckily it is very good. it aired after c3e24 so anytime before or around that timeframe is probably good.
I agree that c2 characters are more "complex" but for whatever reason I just don't have the same love for them as I do the characters from c1
The part of the recent episode where they have to rhyme to leave the fey realm was probably the most I’ve laughed all campaign
I enjoy Dorian’s character and I already stumbled upon a spoiler that said he’s only in episodes 1-14 so bummed out he’s a temporary participant. Currently on episode 9.
Yes, I was on a Wikipedia dive on each of the participants because I was curious and I accidentally stumbled on it.
So for the first time having all of this take place in the same world at the same time is falling flat for me a little. Bells hells has information some god killer that may destroy the world is going to be released and one of the party members knows keyleth who at this point is a level 20 god being that could solo almost any other being in the world and they haven’t immediately enlisted her help. VM could show up and destroy the key without breaking a sweat.
Yep, a little immersion breaking knowing the BBEG could be wiped out by one of your contacts and her friends but they can’t help because they are “busy”
I mean, this is the idea behind every comic book series, right? Why is Batman dealing with this threat without just calling Superman in to eye-nuke it? It's an unfortunate requirement of make believe in a large enough universe.
The first one of you fucking nerds that "well, ackshually, all versions of Batman don't know Superman..." me...
fair point, but it's a critical role thread not a roll for combat thread. very different levels of pretentiousness.
yeah. first episode dropped today. it's supposed to be their cr tier long form campaign, plus other stuff eventually. it's very good. i've never done a dnd pod, just videos. on their patreon ($5) there's an additional ~11 hours of them playing as level 0 characters with no real abilities and only partially rolled ability scores. basically they just rp'd earning all of the starting stuff. it was really fantastic. well worth the $5. i believe the character preview bits they did were uploaded to youtube but sound quality there is lacking. lot of other discussion on it out there too. i can't stress enough how spectacular the music and sound effects are.
first one campaign episode is 2:23. character previews are about an hour and feature part of the level 0 stuff and part of ep 1. level 0 stuff is 11 hours over 8 episodes.
They basically said other things were happening that required their attention, but I get what you're saying
