Leaving for the venue soon. I don’t know if I’ve ever been as excited to see an artist live. Paul Simon is the only other one I can think of.
Guys, I feel pretty confident in saying that was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Just perfection
In my attempt to jot down the set list while paying attention to the show, I forgot they played Green Earrings and Green Flower Street (from The Nightfly) as well.
Jealous of the Rikki and the Green Earrings. But got Godwhacker, Josie, and Black Cow, so I ain't mad.
My wife and I both predicted they’d open with Black Cow :(. There’s obviously a bunch of other stuff I would’ve love to have heard (Kings, Only a Fool Would Say That, Haitian Divorce, Caves of Altimira, Bad Sneakers, Gaucho, etc.) but the only song I’m really bummed they didn’t play was Deacon Blues.
I'm seeing them next month. I had been hoping for a surprise guest appearance from Michael McDonald since he lives pretty close to the venue, but he's on tour with Doobie Brothers.
My first real exposure to Michael McDonald was the joke about them constantly playing his DVD in the 40 Year Old Virgin. Because of that gag, I thought he was kind of a joke. 17 laters and he’s one of the vocalists I respect the most. The guys work, whether with Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers or solo, is phenomenal.
That's how I discovered Steely Dan, yes. The guys I worked with and taught me (guys who had previously worked for Metallica, Prince, RHCP, among others) always had a copy of Aja with them to set the EQs. edit: Gaucho was my go-to.
I obviously love Can’t Buy A Thrill, but it’s criminal that most radio stations only play its singles plus Rikki Don’t Lose That Number when there are so many other great songs of which listeners should be exposed.
Obviously Dirty Work and Only a Fool Would Say That are well loved, but Midnight Cruiser is a stone cold classic, as is Fire in the Hole
Saw McDonald with the Doobie Bros at Lockn. But they were playing another show in NC that night so he took it easy so he didn't blow out his voice. They were also playing with String Cheese so that helped him out I'm sure.
I have vivid memories of my mom turning down the volume on the Countdown to Ecstasy cassette when we were riding around in the car as kids and Show Biz Kids came to the part where they say "You know they don't give a fuck about anybody else." I would listen to the cassette when she wasn't around (latchkey kids woo) just to try and hear what was so scandalous.
The girl I’m talking to was unfamiliar with SD (her dad and I need to have a talk if this progresses) i assigned her Aja for some travel music. A lot rides on this reaction.
halfway through...so good. and a great companion to the music with the way it's broken out with each song/character
Imagine if Gaucho, an already perfect album, had this banger on it. We might have a different thread title
