His explanation for his qualifications to be The Athletic's recruiting guy is that he covered Urban Meyer at Ohio State and so he knows how important recruiting is. I think I'm remembering that correctly, at least.
His formula for college football success is so simple it works great. No need to overcomplicate this stuff.
Lmao 247 acted like that was some great IP grab when they got him. But hey, at least he is doing some homework. Providing something. And its not as bad as his gambling takes.
Have thought the same on Ari. Even the people who do rankings won't take that approach he does. He's basically a third party interpreter which waters down the perspective. he also might have one the biggest profile pic/real life differences on his twitter in all of sports media
The sad thing is that he's probably making like $80k to do it. I have no idea how he suddenly became this national recruiting guy. Weird trajectory.
I think it’s a fun idea to let Bruce Feldman create a mock draft where he then provides feedback on the prospect from college coaches. It’s super weird that he’s clearly using a players own HC for the intel though: An example (Micah Parsons) The Coaching Intel “He is no doubt NFL-ready today, and he has only played linebacker for two years. He hasn’t even scratched the surface yet of what he will be. A future Hall of Famer in my opinion. He’s one of the most competitive people that I’ve ever been around. He always shines in the biggest moments.”
I'm glad I'm not the only one put off by wasserman. The dude is incapable of nuanced thought. It seems like things are binary to him and that's the only way to think about recruiting.
i have never listened to any of the Staples podcasts with him where they rank foods for fear of how bad it would be like a 5 Guys is the best burger in America shit tier opinion bad
Apparently he says this in the article: “I have trouble with L.A.,” Simpson recently told Tim Graham of TheAthletic.com. “People may think this is self-serving, but I might be sitting next to whoever did it. I really don’t know who did this.”
I love The Athletic, I think it’s great, but I never really understood the economics of what they’re trying to do.
would guess there would be a lot of eyeemojis to their writer salaries just within the Georgia/Atlanta sports sphere on the Athletic there's a lot of fat they could trim too
Really enjoy their reporters and stories, but have no idea how they can seemingly charge nothing for all the content and large staff they have. Apparently they haven’t figured it out either.
The Athletic is incredible- the baseball coverage the last 7 days has been unreal. however it’s bringing in $70 million in revenue in 2021 is also impressive- they can get expenses down in the future. Seems like VC money will keep flowing in to me
They’re taking giant losses if $70 mil is their revenue Good site, financiers don’t seem to want to lose face, and seems like a dreadful business model
It won’t last with these financials but let’s enjoy it while it’s still here. Reminds me of when I was a kid and waiting patiently to read the USA Today’s sports section each day. People just don’t want to pay to subscribe to online news. I would go up to $15 a month if that’s what it took.
That’s nearly the price of Netflix, $15 doesn’t mean much but would probably do a hard pass on that Hate ESPN but it’s great value
I cringe when I see people c/ping athletic articles on this board. It's like $5/month or less with new subscriber deals for incredible content. I don't know how much longer it can last, but I'm certainly going to miss it when it's gone.
people want good journalism but they expect to get it for free and that's why it barely exists anymore.
I'd probably be willing to go up to $20 a month for the Athletic if I'm being honest. there's nowhere else that comes close to giving me content for all my sports interests. I follow seven teams on there and the only one I wish had better coverage is PSU football. plus they roll out some really good fantasy content.
As a baseball fan it's a must have. I'm not sure about every team but their Yankees coverage is awesome. If doubling the sub cost kept them in business I'd gladly pay it. Me and 99% of this board have spent $12+ on a drink before. I can find $12/month for a great service I use pretty much daily.
Is the Athletic like Sirus Radio when it comes time to renew subscription? Hard time justifying paying full price when they give out 50% discounts every day of the year to new subscribers.
Posnanski leaving has me thinking things are headed in a bad direction. At least that’s how my simple mind works.
“We learned very quickly that folks tend to listen to their podcasts in specific apps like Spotify or Apple.” Lmao, fucking tech experts there.
yea Idk whats the target demo who is going to the Athletic app to listen to some secret special additional bonus episode each week you have some good podcasts, just get that ad revenue.
love their content but the model always seemed doom to fail for me when Georgia's beat writer "Why I am coming to the The Athletic" article was essentially "I am getting paid more to do less work"
