I was surprise there isn't a thread on this one already. I am enjoying it a lot so far. Colin Farrell doing an excellent job. Comes across as a standard LA shoegum detective show, but is it? "“Sugar” is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried. The series also stars Kirby (“The Sandman”), Amy Ryan (“The Wire”), Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry (“Mindhunter”), Alex Hernandez (“Invasion”), and James Cromwell (“Succession”), with guest stars Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”) and Sydney Chandler (“Don't Worry Darling”). “Sugar” is created by Mark Protosevich who also executive produces. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films, marking their second series with Apple TV+ under Kinberg’s overall deal following “Invasion.” The series was directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “Two Popes”), who also executive produces, and Adam Arkin (“The Offer”), who also co-executive produces."
enjoying it enough to finish but at times the voice over monologues and whiney jazz comes across as campy bordering on cheesy. We get it, it’s a modern day noir tale.
I think it’s more than this, but we will see. Apple TV+ was initially promoted Sugar as a "genre-bending series." There are definitely some weird things about Sugar that require questioning.
you thought that was where it was going? Based on what? That he processes alcohol too fast to get drunk?
Spoiler They said there was a big spin early on, like I pointed out, so I started watching for unusual things. The words he uses to talk about people, observation, etc. are very distant from him being human. The use of movies to understand culture, etc. Super human fighting, observation, and confidence. The weird looking shot kit. The strange flashes from time to time. I figured either AI or alien.
kudos to you for piecing it together. I knew nothing about the show beforehand so perhaps I would have been watching closely for hints had I known but I didn’t see that coming whatsoever. also we might be the only ones watching but on the off chance there are others maybe edit or spoiler your last post
binged it today. big fan so far. Spoiler i assumed he was a robot after the alcohol line and him being so nice. so i'm not entirely stupid.
I didnt think he was an alien or whatever he is, but they dropped a lot of hints he had super human powers. Not getting drunk. Extraordinary awareness/reactions. Hints that society / group he’s a part of has special abilities. Needed to see specific doctors ect.
Agree with most everyone. I didn’t know there was a twist but the abilities and weird interactions started really early on. 5 mins in he shoved his nose into a glass of scotch like a weirdo. After that NSA guy looked him up and mentioned the linguist program I figured they were a government super soldier project or something. I think the shows fine, not in love with it but I look forward to finishing it.
I already hated myself for watching this show but that “reveal” was even dumber than I could have dreamt up.
Seriously why the fuck have this pointless side storyline. Show could’ve been good with just the main story searching for the girl. I really don’t get it.
