Have you ever thrown out opened bottles that sat for a few years because they went bad? I've never had to do it. I have probably 60 bottles in my collection and all of them are open. I guess I don't drink bourbon enough or have too much because some are like 3 years old now. It will be sad if I have to throw some out. So far so good though even on old ones.
The most excited I get about bourbon is when my local store puts out badass single barrel store pick that you can actually get your hands on at basically MSRP or well below secondary. I have never in my life bought a single bottle off facebook or the internet for secondary pricing. But now the really good store picks aren't even happening very often. Or nothing they are doing interests me that much.
This is why I am addicted to sites like Seelbach's, Keg N Bottle, Shared Pour, and Bourbon Outfitters. They tend to get the most sought after single barrel picks.
Our backwards ass state doesn't allow shipping of liquor from out of state distributors or sellers. Would definitely be a game changer. I think it has something to do with the centralized warehousing and distributing not wanting the competition. I forget the rationale behind the prohibition.
Seelbachs will ship to you, just select store pickup, and then send them a label. Sharedpour may actually ship to your house, they do here in Alabama, and we are in the same boat.
Yes, I think Keg N Barrel will allow for labels or may ship directly even without a label. California sites tend to say fuck it as long as the buyer takes on the risk, and even then I have had them refund me money when a bottle leaked. You can also get shipping insurance from most of these sites.
Well shit. I'm in that publix multiple times a week, typically. Guess I need to start dropping in and just looking around. I don't think I've been inside in over a year
I've had a couple of their single barrels and they are pretty good but probably not worth the $20 jump over regular cask strength.
Just swung by my local spot to see what they had. Had quite a few Penelope... Barrel Strength, Architect, Toasted and Toasted Rye. Also had Holladay Soft Red Wheat BiB. Any of those good? I couldn't remember which Holladay people liked.
Any Holladay is solid but I prefer their Soft Red Wheat. Both their standard BiB and barrel strength are excellent quality/value. Live in KC and see it everywhere and everything I've got from them has been very solid.
Penelope is owned by MGP, so their product is going to get better and better. I am not a fan of the Rio. It's too sweet for me, but I do love the light whiskey. I have a 16 year version of that which is phenomenal, but anything marked 15 is going to be amazing. I also have a 9 year single barrel barrel strength that is very good. I haven't tried the others.
What do you guys think about JT Meleck? I was looking at some of their cask strength but don’t know anything about it
I have been peer pressuring him to buy bottles for weeks. He has somehow managed to resist most of the FOMO. I have on the hook for one bottle so far of Kings County BP Batch 18.
