peter Jackson didn’t want to make those. Everything that made the lord of the rings films great, Jackson didn’t do. Those were 100% a phoned in money grab even if there were some fantastic acting performances thrown in there. They’ve spent a shitload of money and taken a long time on this series. I think everyone should expect this to be awesome
Absolutely. I hadn’t read the books and I love it. I was a little skeptical of how it was going to play out/what direction it was going in the middle of the first season but it’s been great.
There’s obviously been enormous streaming events, certainly new seasons of Stranger Things...However!!! This is going to be a monster on its own.
Just randomly came across this. Colbert's obsession and knowledge on all things LOTR is one of my very favorite things.
I’ve watched this a couple times now and I still want to know what the fuck is up with Don Monaghan’s voice. He says in a show he does with Billy Boyd that it just naturally deepened over time or something but there’s no way. He sounds like he had throat cancer or something.
1. Galadriel…just….no. No. Fucking no. 2. The neutering of Elendil. 3. The complete absence of development or characterization for Celebrimbor 4. Seven episodes of fluff before rushing through the actual interesting part of the story…you know, the fucking name of the show? 5. Wink-wink maybe Gandalf being a homeless beggar man-child and apparently the only Istari but knowing nothing about it until I guess he needed to? 7. Inserting pointless new characters to check off boxes while ignoring the ones who were already established in lore. I can go on.
I enjoyed it, but that’s bc I’m a whore for any Tolkien content no matter what. Definitely have my issues with some of the decisions though, mainly everything jack said
I’m just tired of producers/writers manipulating beloved IPs solely to have an avenue to package and sell something that wouldn’t fly without the name recognition. I mentioned this in a Star Wars thread years ago, but it’s possible to write interesting and creative stories within the existing framework of the characters without torching what they were written as.
Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy is an annual re-watch for me. Everything holds up so well. The actors, soundtrack (still a regular listen when I'm trying to focus on a report at work), wardrobe, set design/landscape, etc. I'm not even sure the CGI would be much better at this point.
Isn't the bulk of the extended universe in The Silmarillion though? I thought the Tolkien Estate wasn't willing to sell the rights to that. Seemed like a partial explainer as to why the Amazon series sucked so bad.
A First Age story (focused on the Silmarils, Beren and Luthien, the war against Morgoth, the Kin Slayings, etc.) could be great, just keep everybody involved in the show away from it.
Def wouldn't be as they would use way too much. Of all they things they could do with this universe a reboot is the absolute last thing anyone needs. And I gobble up anything to do with Tolkien, I watch the Hobbit messes when they're on.
No lord of the rings property will ever be worth a shit because no one is going to do what Jackson did. No one is going to have 10,000 extras for huge battle scenes, no one is going to scour the globe for perfect set locations, no everyone is just going to green screen and CGI everything and it’ll never feel as real or authentic
Not enough credit is given to the exec that told Jackson to make three movies instead the one that he pitched.
