For whatever reason, it didn't occur to me that Isis's goal would be to conquer Rome and not Washington. Rome was always the Ottoman's goal during the 16th century. Empires of the Sea is a great book about Spain, the Knights Hospitaller, and the Ottomans fighting over control of the Mediterranean. The Great Siege: Malta 1565 is also really good.
I take it you guys aren't all that aware of how the US sticks its nose in latin american politics and elections. To whit, this isn't exactly unheard of.
Vice has really gone in deep over Afghanistan and Iraq the last few years and rightfully so. The waste and disaster we've wrought in the region is astounding.
oh right. sorry if I sounded like a dick don't forget the environmental damage and using essentially irradiated weapons, causing horrifying birth/developmental defects and cancers in children in Fallujah! Another 100% necessary action taken with appropriate weaponry in a city!
Interfering with elections is small potatoes compared to regime change. I'd be upset if we didn't game election results after what we had poured into Iraq.
I think they overstated ISIS' ability to effectively hold populated land and I don't really think a captured ISIS soldier is a credible source when you're looking for a clear picture of their capabilities. I think they did do a good job of showing just how rag-tag the defense is. Americans should be asking why we aren't helping them more.
I still struggle to wrap my mind around the death wish level hatred between sunni and shia. It would be like if catholics and non-catholics hated he each other so much that they would murder each other on sight. There could be no united states if that were the case. We would have to split the country. And it seems like that is the reality over there. I don't see any long term solution that involves them simply living together peacefully. Perhaps the arbitrary drawing of lines by Europeans long ago maybe wasn't the best way to form states in the middle east. I also posted in the ISIS thread that the show just reinforced the reality that invading Iraq was easily the dumbest decision of the last century. And boy do the Russians love to rub that in our faces.
Anyone felt that battle scene was staged? They were like "most of the shots being fired are from our side but we promise they're also shooting".
and how many hundreds of thousands have died since he was ousted? there is no valid justification for the invasion of iraq
I have no idea what a "liberal slant" has anything to do with whether it was a good idea to invade Iraq. The fact the you even bring it up in defending the invasion is pretty curious. The Vice show wasn't even about the invasion. If anything it highlighted mistakes after he invasion by both presidents. But to your point, we didn't invade Iraq because Saddam killed thousands of his own people. We invaded because he had WMD's, was plotting with al qaeda and was an imminent threat to the US. Remember? Hell, if having a maniacal dictator who kills his own people is the reason we wholesale invade countries, we are going to be pretty fucking busy for the next century or so because there are plenty we seem to ignore.
We Take an Inside Look at Boko Haram in Tonight's 'VICE' on HBO Premiere The third season of our Emmy-winning HBO show wrapped up last summer, and ever since then, we've been hard at work on our next string of episodes about the pressing and untold stories happening around the globe. This Friday, February 5, at 11 PM, HBO will premiere the first episode of season four. We've got a ton of really great stuff coming in this new season—including Thomas Morton trying to see what life on Mars would actually be like—and we're excited for you to check it out. Friday's premiere will open with a segment on Boko Haram hosted by former Navy SEAL Kaj Larsen. Larsen spent six weeks embedded with the Nigerian army on the front lines of the fight against Boko Haram, and interviewed the president of Nigeria, a Boko Haram commander, and one of the group's 16-year-old female victims. Check out a clip from that segment above. In the second half of the show, Isobel Yeung delves into the world of human gene editing. She talks to a couple who decided to choose the sex of their baby and meets the scientists who've been developing the technology that could reshape evolution as we know it. The 18-episode season will continue every Friday night at 11 PM, exclusively on HBO. Be sure to keep watching. And if you're desperately in need of more VICE episodes to fill the weekly gaps, you can rewatch our entire third season online now.
lol. Actually HatterasJack I think we invaded because a powerful (lunatic) minority liked the idea of converting Iraq into a democratic hub, one profitable for American industry and capable (again, if you are a lunatic) of supporting an extensive campaign to defeat Islamic extremism throughout the region - and when sane rational Americans most needed courageous thoughtful leadership from the Democratic party, they cowardly went along with the nonsense those fucking idiots were throwing at the wall. "9/11!"
It's sad that we live in a society where stuff like environmental issues and Human Rights get politicised as "liberal slant"
Vice is doing segments on notable streets and their neighborhoods in cities. Kinda like a discount Anthony Bourdain. Good watch whrn killing time
I think the "liberal slant" he was referring to was the method by which they presented their ideas. Ie. cherry picking clips, interviews, whatever else much like netflix did with Making a Murderer. Not simply the fact that they are addressing those subjects.
Right. It can be a left slanted view that they are pushing or it could be a right slanted view they are pushing. Vice just happens to cherry pick to support their typically left-leaning views. Never tried to say that vice was the only one that did it, in fact I even included another content creator that does it.
Are you trying to say that Vice does not cherry pick the clips that they show to push their agenda, whatever that may be?
If you have a problem with the methodology of Making a Murderer, your actual problem is with the truth. (Much like the vast majority of morons who utter the phrase "liberal media bias" with any kind of frequency). And Vice isn't any more or less biased across the board than anything else. Yes they have agendas, and more often than not those agendas line up with the truth of a story.
The problem is that "liberal slant" or "conservative slant" are often just used to describe things people disagree with. If Vice was trying to slant the Iraq story in one direction or another they did a pretty shitty job as both Bush and Obama looked horrible in that episode.
Instead of saying they cherry pick, give me an example of what they could add to give it less of a liberal slant.
They could only take out atrocities committed to fit his narrative that falls in line with his "safe" fantasy world where his political team "wins" like a football team wins a game. People that are adamant about certain political parties like one is the good guys are scary. They are all crooks.
its a geopolitical nightmare. the fact is when the fighting 'stops' the guns will be faced towards us. That's how this always works.
It was interesting to me that one of the captured soldiers appeared much more conflicted about his involvement and the institution than the others. he didn't say "we will win" but more along the lines of "it would be very hard to defeat them." believe he also stated he joined because ISIS had already taken over his region. found that to be insightful ...
Yeah. It felt like shots of the Jews on their way to the concentration camps, and the Soviet prisoners to the labor camps
Would've been a lot worse if that woman had an incurable disease imo. Was still really sad though with her kids showing up and stuff.
Idk how you can approve death without proof of an incurable disease? They said a 24 year old who was depressed was approved for it, what? At least there's still some hope for people with slight mental disease. Alzheimer's, cancer, ALS, etc I understand. PTSD, depression? Can be overcome. Was sad to see the children have to watch their mother die, who appeared to be ok.
amazing episode. The documentary on Right to Die in Oregon was exceptional too. Excited for Viceland to launch.
Just watched the euthanasia episode, god damn that was depressing. To me the Dutch lady was just looking for an easy and legal way to die and not by suicide. The Oregon mom was just heart breaking and I'll keep my opinions to myself on the situation, but feel really bad for the kids.
