I'll quote this in here... Yea...knowing everything that happens makes OotP a lot better than the first time through imo. So much important stuff going on especially compared to the rather nonsensical GoF
Nonsensical? You mean what truly tethered Voldemort to Harry and allowed for things to come out in the end? I would say knowing everything that happens make GoF a lot better, especially at the end.
For me the purpose of GoF was to show us the wider wizarding world and it served its purpose very well.
It was loads of fun no doubt with the QWC, other schools, etc, I just think the Triwizard Tournament was a rather dumb device.
Listening to GoF on my drive to work this morning and just about choked on my coffee when Crouch called Percy "Weatherby"
Truman at some point would you want to do an overall review post? Looking back over everything what were some things you liked and didn't like etc.
I dont know what I'd say that I haven't already. For a first read through I was really just soaking it all it, and probably would take a re-read to be more critical and pick up on some things that I missed the first go around like little plot holes ect. Im sure I'll do a re-read at some point, but not anytime soon. The biggest struggle I have is Snape's motivation to help Dumbledore after Lilly died. I guess it makes sense, I still have to force it imo. The funniest part by far was when Ron hit himself w the spell and was burping slugs. Still laugh thinking about it.
Voldemort wants the Potters dead. While Snape might be on board with James being out of the picture, Lily is the only person he ever cared about. He can't remain loyal to the Dark Lord, but he can't leave without Dumbledore's protection.
I get where youre coming from, It's just a hard sell for me. He's never shown the ability to keep his cool. He has a history of lashing out from calling lily a mudblood to flipping out on Harry. To me it's a bit hard to buy he be so calm and cool for all this time while he's exacting this long-con revenge.
Also I watched Fantastic Beasts last night and forgot to post. Not sure the running thoughts thing worked as well for a movie, but here you go -- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Grindlewald!! - "A Dark wind w eyes" - - A dementor? - This main character is so peculiar looking. Also having a platypus as your wizard pet is awesome - This egg hatching... A dragon??? - lol this platypus has super sticky fingers. - Oh I bet that fat muggle hit this dude with his own case and ran off with it. The laws of saturday morning cartoons say they totally switched luggage and didnt realize it - The call muggles Nomag's in America? terrible name. - Oh shit this chick is an Auror. Or at least was one. I guess Ferrel's character is one too. - Graves... - Yep. Switched cases... - Slytherins would like these American wizard laws. Can't marry muggles and shit. - Hold up... This likes like the 1920s. Grindlewald had already turned super dark. Assuming that puts him (and Dumbledore ) in the early 20s at the youngest. Dumbledore dies just shy of Harry's 17th bday which was 1999. Dumbledore was around 90-100 when he died??? Damn. - This creepy ass kid w the bowl cut giving a Snape-ish vibe that's with the anti-witch group is totally a wizard imo - Graves has some weird leverage on him. Maybe not a wizard? idk - Goldstien's sister is a real Molly Weasley in the kitchen - This is a crazy suitcase. - "My philosophy is if you worry, you suffer twice" . I like that. Wise words. - LMAO this Magic Rhino thing broke into the zoo to bang a muggle rhino. - Oh man Shaw got fucked up. Was it Grindlewald?? - What is Obscurus??? - Newt's bro is a war hero - Obscurus answered. - Newt was thrown out of Hogwarts for endangering lives w creatures. Hagrid's kindred spirit - Dumbledore was Newts teacher that advocated for him. That puts Dumbledore closer to 100 if not over at time of death. - Dang they're both sentenced to death? - Is this a big ass pensive??? - Swooping Evil is awesome - giggle water - Nope that thing in the egg was not a dragon - Leta Lestrange... - Ahhh Credence is a Squib. duh. - NOOOOPE he's the Obscurus!!!!! - Graves was Grindlewald?? Grindlewald is Johnny Depp??? Nice. - Nice Newt hooked Jacob up. Got his bakery! That was a great movie. I enjoyed it very much. There's going to be 4 more of these?
Another jk plot hole. She mentions during the HP series that the Salem witch trials were no big deal, but here we are in the fantastic beasts universe and the Salem which trial was a very big deal.
I've never thought that Snape was acting solely out of revenge or altruism. I think it's likely that once tethered to Voldemort and the Death Eaters it got to a point of no return and upon Voldemort's death he genuinely wanted to escape that life and regretted ever getting in it. If that's the case then his actions make sense in terms of playing both sides once V returns.
The Alan Rickman Snape is a lot more calm cool and collected than the book Snape. I watch the movies all the time on Harry Potter weekends and am so used to that Snape that I forgot how hot headed, cruel and vindictive book Snape is. I regularly use Rickman's derision filled "Obviously" in my everyday life
"It destroyed her, what they did: She was never right again," Aberforth said. "She wouldn’t use magic, but she couldn’t get rid of it; it turned inward and drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it, and at times she was strange and dangerous. But mostly she was sweet and scared and harmless." "[If] the Ministry had known what Ariana had become, she’d have been locked up in St. Mungo’s for good. They’d have seen her as a serious threat to the International Statute of Secrecy, unbalanced like she was, with magic exploding out of her at moments when she couldn’t keep it in any longer."
Has it been discussed how much of a steaming pile of shit the Goblet of Fire movie is? Getting close to finishing my reread of the book and realizing I had forgotten how much of an abortion the movie is
GoF movie is when the books got too long to be made into just one movie. They should have started breaking it up into multiple movies at that point.
I felt that books 4-6 should have been multiple movies and the book 7 could have been one movie. Lots of dead time with them trudging around the woods. However, even with the two movies for book 7, I think movie 7.2 was absolutely atrocious. Terrible job with the final showdown.
final showdown was brutal, won't disagree there. Pretty much everything post Kings Cross meeting with Dumbledore was awful. However, just like in the book, the wandering the woods was necessary to set a tone of hopelessness over how massive their task was and how little direction they had to go on.
I actually did bring that up. Loved the book, hated the movie. Also noted that Order of the Phoenix, which was my least fave book , was pretty good as a movie. Still need to watch movies of the last 2 books.
The first time I saw 7.2 I was really enjoying it (with some minor qualms, primarily that Voldemort could feel the loss of horcruxes) and then it vigorously jumped off a cliff post King's Cross Station into a cesspool of horrors. The movie as a whole hasn't aged well with rewatches and is below average as far as the movies go.
I don't care to ever watch it again but what did they do again at the end of HBP movie that was so god damned lame?
I've only watched the first movie in entirety, but I did youtube various scenes to see how they played out on screen. I think my two biggest disappointments were Dumbledore's reaction to Harry's name coming out of the Goblet of Fire and the final fight between Harry and Voldemort. I love the book version of Harry and Voldemort facing off inside of a ring of fellow combatants who have all stopped to watch. The movie version Voldemort chasing Harry all over Hogwarts as Harry explains everything and then them flying around before Harry finally wins is lame imo
I hate more than anything else in the entire movie series how the Death Eaters move around. It makes the fights all so dumb and it kills the fact that is was so terrifying that Voldemort could do fly without a broom when they all can
Shitty AMC Show of Cedric Diggory is such a monumental point in the book series, as it is the first time Harry witnesses how real this all is and how high the stakes are. Just reread this portion on my way into work this morning and Rowling does a fantastic job of it. It isn't an end of the chapter cliffhanger or anything, it just happens. She also does it in a way that forces the reader to internalize it and move on rapidly, just like Harry has to. There is no chance to dwell on the fact that a Hogwarts student has just been murdered, we immediately have to move on to the fact that Voldemort is on the verge of his rebirth.
Not sure if this was said in jest but they had it in gringotts and took it out days before death eaters broke into the vault
Cursed Child Act 1 Scene 1 - I know this apparently sucks but still want to put out some thoughts, if nothing more than to complete the series. - Right away, I hate reading this in play form. I love that Ron seemingly is turning into a cheesy dad w bad dad jokes just like Arther, and that Neville is a prof @ Hogwarts. Scene 2 - Rose Weasley is a bit of an snobby uppity bitch. Albus just trying to make friends on their first day on the Hogwarts Express - Oh shit. Scorpius is rumored to be Voldemort's son. What a bummer for that kid. - Albus in slytherin Scene 3 - Skipped a year. Albus and Scorpius are the school outcasts together. Awwww -McGonagall is still there :gosh: - Rose is the chaser for Gryff. Just like mom and dad :gosh: :gosh: Scene 4 - Damn skipped ahead again. This is moving fast. - Albus sucks at magic. Sounds like he's not doing great at school. - Scorpious mom died? - Lilly potter goes to Gryffindor. Poor Albus still segregated. Scene 5 - Harry grew up to be an Auror? Sweet. - Hermione is Minsiter of Magic? Perfect - lol at Hermione giving him shit for not doing paperwork, and Harry suggest her doing it for him like it was homework. Nostalgia... Scene 6 - Amos Diggory still giving Harry shit about Cedric dying for him - Wants Harry to use a time turner to get Cedric back Scene 7 - Ron sending Harry's kids prank gifts. lol - Albus is such a downer. Scene 8 - Oh we're back to the scene of Harry's 11th bday Scene 9 - Oh boy, Harry's scar is flaring up. Scene 10 - Now Albus is being a snot to Rose. - Sounds like Harry is still a badass as an Auror. Found another time turner - Oh man, Albus wants Scorpius to go with him back in time to save Cedric Scene 11 - Trolly Witch... blah blah Scene 12 - Hermione holding a big meeting. - Voldemort's allies are mobilizing. Oh boy - Draco dismissing it all just because V is dead. You'd think he of all people would take this more seriously. smh. - LMAO @ Ron asking Draco "Do you want a smack in the mouth" Scene 13 - Albus and Scorpius at a retired wizard home looking for Amos Scene 14 - Amos not having any of it. Hates both these kids lol - Well now he does. Sending his niece w them on this quest Scene 15 - Ron "Nothing scares me, Apart from mum" Her son is in his mid 30s and still scurred. Molly still got it. - Owl from McGonagall, They realize the kids bolted Scene 16 - polly juice! - The impressions of ron and harry are p funny Scene 17 - They realize the kids ran away, Albus was the ringleader Scene 18 - LOL at Albus trying to act as Ron w Hermione. Smooching his aunt Good stuff Scene 19 - These forbidden books... Got all up in Trelawney's stuff. - They found the time turner... It's ok. some interesting stuff, but def not up to the high standards JK as set for herself
More just being lazy and not typing it all out, than refusing to use it. Didnt know she didnt write it. Did she just lay out plot points and some playwright write it?
I just powered through and finished without the notes. It wasn't as bad as it was made out to be imo. It certainly wasn't good, but I didnt hate it. It was just good to be in that world again. I feel a lot of it was fan service to parts in the books. 6/10
My biggest gripe is that it felt like a bad fan fiction. Voldemort having a kid in the middle of a war w/ his right hand death eater. It made no sense
