Started watching last night and really enjoying it. It’s created by the creator of Peaky Blinders. It is about the rise of Ska music in Birmingham and Coventry in 1981 under the backdrop of the "The Troubles" in Ireland and England with the IRA, etc. It's a bit whimsical considering the nature of the content, but I really like the characters so far and the conflict they setup between characters as well as their moral dilemmas and addictions. (A good part of it is filmed in Wolverhampton for some reason. Thus the icon since we don't have Coventry or Birmingham City._
My wife is really into this show cuz she's really into The Specials and other 2nd wave/2tone ska bands that came out of this area. I'm finding the skipping back and forth between Coventry and Birmingham a bit confusing for me since to me they're both just "out that way" in the West Midlands, and I have no real internal cultural grasp of the different factions they're talking about, but I'm enjoying it. I had no idea the kinds of riots the UK was having in the 70s to be honest.
It is, but it is also very compelling. Saying this is about Ska or it is about the conflict with Ireland really doesn't do this justice. The execution is fun and interesting.
I just finished. I thought it was well done, but I wish it was longer. Tidy wrap-up. I hope they do a second season.
