Didn't take notes or anything but he fucking loves it so far. The last three nights we've put it on after dinner and watch together as a fam. The second Mrs. Celemo gets home from work he's hounding me to put on the next episode. I think mostly because he's dying to see Carmichael in S2 (he saw him in an ad and was sold). Anyways Klaus and Ben are his faves. He laughs at pretty much everything Klaus says and does. He kinda wants to know if Allison's powers would work if she used sign language (lol). Through S1 there were a couple times he got a little scared and hid in the bathroom for a little bit. He wasn't fazed by Klaus in the mausoleum with the dead people but he hid when it was apparent Vanya was going to kill Pogo.
Spoiler Agree. It’s what Heroes did with Peter. First season was great and season 2 they made him forget everything about his past and then had no clue where to go from there
Finished and thought it was outstanding. Agree that they need to move on from saving the world from Vanya and based on the ending that looks like what 3 season would be doing. A couple of cool things I didn’t see mentioned... Spoiler In the original timeline Klaus and Dave meet in the Army but Dave is boarding a Marine bus in the last episode. Did Klaus alter the past and save him after all? Also Harlan is seen holding and playing with a wooden Sparrow throughout the season, is he somehow involved with the Sparrow Academy? I haven’t read any of the comics so apologies if these are already well known
Also the music was exceptional again and seem to get better as the season went on. Wray needs to drop the MCR bullshit and focus on UA imo
S2 thoughts inbound; - really enjoyed the plot a whole lot, they got the who out of the way last season so it was nice to jump right in and go - the soundtrack was good, really really good. I can see why some people were put off by it because there were a time or two where the song was a little too on the nose like Dancing With Myself during Five vs. Five but whatevs. I didn't find it distracting at all. The usage of the Butthole Surfers "Pepper" while Vanya was tripping was fucking amazing and gave me goose bumps - Enjoyed Diego's story arc even though he reminded me of the Geico Cavemen - The Hargreeves alien reveal was satisfying since the comic book revealed it in the 1st few pages of the first issue - Lila's mimic reveal was solid as well...fucking didn't see that coming - Interested to see more about the Sparrow Academy w. Emo-Ben other great quotes/moments - Five on Diego: “Imagine Batman, then aim lower.” - Elliot: “Are you or are you not an enemy of the people?” as Diego and Five pause to mull over the existential nature of that question - Klaus: "You look like Antonio Banderas with the long hair. I just thought you should know." - Diego: "Yeah, why don’t you tell that to Luke Skywalker? I know you don’t get it, but that is an excellent reference." - Swede: "Unharm my weiner" - Klaus: "the point is...Frogs are bitches" - Ben possessing Klaus so he can talk to Jill and finds out that Klaus already had a threeway with her on the sex swing - Five(s) Paradox Psychosis and Luther pointing out all the stages - Diego on the infinite switchboard: "I made that machine my bitch." probably missing a ton I'll bring up later but huge fan of the show and am sad we have to wait for S3
I actually shouted "holy fuck she's a mimic!" and startled both my wife and my dog. I think they're trying to Thor #1 a bit; make him the muscular idiot comic relief
So I just discovered this show a week ago. Burned through both seasons. Music is fantastic. Fight scenes are great. Klaus is the best. So is the dad an alien?
It was implied in S1 when he left his dying wife with rockets in the background and ended up in early 20th century NYC.
Spoiler definitely think you are right about the Klaus/Dave B plot. At bare minimum, Dave ended up in a different branch so he probably doesn't end up on that hill unless they do some kind of pre-ordained destiny type of thing
I meant to imply that the Sparrow reveal makes it appear as if they're moving away from the 'Vanya brings on Doomsday' stuff, which is welcome imo
I work with a doc who loves time travel movies/shows. Sold him on the Umbrella Academy with 3 words "Time Travel Assassins" Anyways he just finished S2 and said S3 is Time Travel Fiction 101, Go Back in time in S1, Try to return to present time in S2, Alternate reality upon returning in S3. The math checks out
I really think the fantastic scene with them all deciding to get in the car with Vanya as a family symbolized the characters finally coming together and moving on from the "Vanya is doomsday" plot, which, at its core, was all about the characters being divided. Now they are together and can move onto this Sparrow Academy plot and whatever the Big Bad of S3 ends up being. Also, I definitely think Sissy's "friend in California" will end up having something to do with the creation of all the kids who were spontaneously born that day.
The more I digest season 2 the more I enjoy it. The show might not have any one aspect that’d be considered ‘elite’ (other than the aforementioned soundtrack usage) but does so many things really well that it makes for a super enjoyable watch. One of the very top shows of the last 5 years in terms of pure entertainment.
agreed. Meatball kinda kept bitching about them always deviating from doing the right thing/sticking to the gameplan for personal reasons. "oh we have to meet here in 45 minutes to use the briefcase back to our own time cool....but first there's something I need to do". Once I fully explained the scorpion parable that Klaus attempted to use w. Ben, the lightbulb finally clicked. That made the whole sequence of the UA putting shit aside so they could be w. Vanya so powerful.
Idk, men have played women for centuries. Eddie Redmayne performed admirably in The Danish Girl. Page won’t have an issue continuing, and Vanya is borderline androgynous as is. edit: I need to throw in that I read the full post and he is non-binary so me saying men have played women for centuries doesn’t fully reflect the situation, but yeah.
BexTaylor-Kraus is non-binary mostly male-presenting and still gets work as both, so I don’t imagine Elliot Page will have trouble getting work going forward. Too big a name in the queer community to blackball even if they wanted to.
Umbrella Academy is certainly far from a traditional television show. I could definitely see the show runners basically leaning into it and showing the Vanya character accepting who he/she is and how it affects her growth as a person.
At the end of the day it’s just acting and these are roles. Unless he has an issue with it, he should still be able to assume any existing recurring role as a female character.
One thing that’s interesting is every season is about a world ending catastrophic event but they spend time on small inconsequential character building. I think that’s what I appreciate.
it’s been said before but I can’t think of another series that nails the soundtrack as perfectly as UA
my only soundtrack complaint (and it's minute) was the Dancing With Myself 5 vs 5 scene was a little too on the nose
I disagree wholeheartedly and think it was the cherry on top of the overindulgence that was that entire scene.
