really want to make the jump to Fi (I got my invite and welcome kit last week), but I have a feeling as soon as I make the effort to switch, they will make the N5 eligible for Fi and i will have wiped/factory reset my phone for nothing.
Phone updated to a new version of Hangouts on Thursday or Friday morning. Since then, group texts nor picture messages will download. Get that New MMS Message thing and when I click Download, it attempts it for a couple minutes before failing. Talked to Verizon Customer Service and they couldn't figure it out either. Said it might be my SIM card but I'm not sure at all what would have changed with the SIM that could affect my phone like it has. Any ideas?
Follow up. Is there an easy way for me to revert back to the old version of Hangouts to see if that is actually the issue? Phone is not rooted.
Settings > Apps > Hangouts > Uninstall Updates (This should bring hangouts to whatever version was originally on your phone.) Then go to http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/hangouts/ to download the appropriate version you want to try. There might be a newer version at that link you could try first. Otherwise you probably want the June version. You have to allow unknown sources for installation in your settings app. Probably under security.
Reverting to the old Hangouts worked. MMS is working as normal again. Annoying that it was fucking up though.
Google's upcoming Nexus phone might look like this by Steve Dent | @stevetdent | 6 hours ago We know another Nexus smartphone is coming soon, but built by whom? Both Huawei and LG arerumored to be making Google's reference device for Android M, and we now have pretty solid evidence for LG. A picture of the device from an Indonesian G+ user spotted by blogger Marques Brownlee shows the back of an LG Nexus device. Size-wise, it appears to line up with the 5.2-inch rumors and also features a rear fingerprint scanner, bulging camera, laser focus, dual-LED, iPhone 6-style flash and plastic galore.
Anyone gotten the Edge S6+ or a Note 5 yet? Apparently ruined my S3 this weekend camping and it got soaked.
4 has a better battery. Removable battery and micro SD card expansion. Will also probably be cheaper. Specs upgrades are negligible. I've had every note and I am not upgrading.
I mean...why? Huawei Nexus leak reveals a weird camera hump by Steve Dent | @stevetdent | 2 hours ago Google's Nexus phablet from Huawei looks like a steamroller ran over a periscope, if a leak from China'siNexus.co has any merit. Google is reportedly releasing two new Nexus models with Android M, a 5.2-inch model from LG and 5.7-incher from Chinese manufacturer Huawei. The LG version already leaked, but the above photo is the first we've seen of the Huawei variant (other than a render). We're not quite sure what to make of it -- there appears to be a large, oval cutout at the top for a camera module, a decidedly odd design choice.
With Samsung moving to look like iPhone's, I am fully hoping that other companies jump on this opportunity and do some awesome things. That Nexus, if real, is gross. Wouldn't even consider it as an option for me.
Upgrade time. What phone should I get? Spotify, Internet, alarm and that's about it for uses. Lift with it, fish with it, want something that's not cumbersome. At Verizon now. Suggestions?
It doesn't sound like you really need a flagship device. So you may as well look at the Moto G. It is cheap, on Verizon, and has great battery life. You can also customize it's appearance if you'd like. Edit: Just saw fish with it. It is also waterproof for up to 30 minutes. Link to review: http://www.engadget.com/2015/08/11/moto-g-review-2015/
Went with that until I saw it had no notification light, which is what I need since my phone is only out for 30 seconds at a time. Directed towards that LG G4 instead. Bad choice?
It is true that it doesn't have a notification light, but the reason they got rid of that is it has what they call "Moto Display". Basically when you pull your phone out of your pocket or flip it over (it's activated by proximity sensor), the display will pop on to show the notifications and what they are. You can then immediately access those apps to respond to texts and what not. I have the original Moto X from 2013, when they first introduced this active display, and it'd be hard for me to get a phone that doesnt have it. Extremely useful. My phone doesn't have a notification light, but you just don't need it. G4 is a great phone so you wouldn't be going wrong with that choice. G4 is a flagship phone, and is price accordingly. It just may be more phone that what you need based on your description. See video at 4:30 mark for example of Moto Display: Full description of the Moto (active) Display on my older phone, which I believe they have added to in terms of functionality:
Going to take back the G4 and give the Moto a try. I have 14 days to try the phones. Can I root the Moto? I am unable to use a good equalizer app for my Spotify music with my G4, which is disappointing.
Looks like you should be able to root it... http://liliputing.com/2015/08/moto-g-2015-root-bootloader-unlock-and-custom-recovery.html BTW I am not sure, but I think you have to buy the Moto G directly through Motorola via Motomaker.
LG's 5.2 inch Nexus better be cool and look nothing like the Huawei because that's what I've been waiting on.
I think the thing looks pretty damn nice. Yes, it had a weird nipple-esque camera bump but I bet that protect the lens better than what Samsung and Apple currently have. Finger print scanner on back makes sense for a phone with no home button. I just wish it released now for price comparison prior to buying the Moto X. Although I'd favor the Moto for size and added Moto features.
Love it. Does everything I need and I abuse the shit out of my battery and just have to pop in my fresh one after work. I got used to the size too
I still love the Nexus 6 (even though it's been on my desk for a couple of months) I just wish Google would work on an iMessage alternative. They day they release that is the day I pull the sim out of the 6 plus and put it back into the Nexus. I know there are 3rd party options out there, but I can't find one that I like.
Besides Gvoice (which only a small # of people use), I think Hangouts is the most underwhelming major google product. I think i've been waiting for true SMS/Hangouts ubiquity since about 2012 IO. Nothing.... even 3 years on
I have 0 use for texting from my computer. I guess I just don't understand it because I wouldn't use it.
I use pushbullet right now and I love it. I hate picking my phone up to text from the small screen, so its wonderful (to me) to text just like its from a gchat window. only thing that doesn't work is outgoing mms (group/pic messages).
fingerprint reader that actually works, IM LOOKING AT YOU MOTOROLA ATRIX, would be clutch for me because of HIPAA and shit
I use it all day at work Sending pics and links directly from my laptop to text is great. I never have to pull my phone out of my pocket when I'm in my office. iMessage became a real winner to me when they released full SMS support. Honestly I'm shocked that Google has yet to have an answer to this.
What's the best thing on TMobile now? My S4 is starting to get wonky (WiFi stops working, have to pull battery to get it back on) and have never loved the whole Sense thing. Wife had the original Nexus before she had to get the joneses and do an iPhone 5: enjoyed the Nexus. Would like removable battery and card, but I guess these aren't dealbreakers. FWIW would like the phone to be good for 2-3 years, as I'm not an upgrade fiend. Fingerprint reader and reasonable speed would also be nice.
