I am 42. I have been listening to Stern since before you were born. Artie was very overrated. He is not a funny comedian. He had a good story here and there that were hysterical, but otherwise offered not much. The show still offers plenty of funny moments. The only thing really different is that there are many less episodes and they are stopping at 10 on the button.
The show runs so much smoother without Artie, and this is coming from someone who's basically grown up in the post-Jackie era
certainly no not a jackie fan here, but the dynamic with them hating on jackie while he was there was somewhat interesting.
pffffft Show has never been as funny as it was in the late 80's thru the 90's. I still listen, albeit a day late, but the days of Richard Simmons coming in and getting pummeled are gone. Jackie & Billy West were the brilliance of that time, and that time was by far the best of times in regard to Howard. IDK maybe part of the fun was them trying to control themselves for the sake of the sensors but the Sirius show never lived up to the terrestrial show. Just my
I'm not concerned with identifying which era of the show is the best. I only know this... I've been listening since the summer of 1991 when Howard came on the air in Los Angeles and he never fails to make me laugh and keep me interested.
There have been so many things since that era that were amazing. The get the poison out raven stuff was some of the most interesting, creepy, and funny stuff I have ever heard on the radio.
What can I say? I laugh at simple things. I miss the days of Robin reporting on something horrific like a bus crash killing a bunch of senior citizens and then there would be this really short pause and they would play the Jackie Whoop and then you'd hear him laughing for real in the background. I'm an easy victim to repetitive comedy I guess but stuff like that made me laugh day after day.
you're arguing for the show producing maybe 20 minutes of legitimate comedy a week whereas in years past they used to put out hours a day. said it before and I'll say it again, the show is a pale imitation of itself. Howard has checked out and simply doesn't care and the show was far, far better with Artie than without(in the post-Jackie era, show was best with Jackie). since Artie left there's only been a handful of things that were uproariously funny and worth listening to over and over.
I'm glad Artie's gone. He was rarely funny, and I really noticed him most when he was annoying me. The Italian-common man act was really tired. His impressions were usually solid, and his interactions with crazy Alice were hilarious, but the rest was meh. The only downside of losing Artie was more Robin.
The only thing I liked about Artie was when he drunk-dialed Richard as Richard's dad. Otherwise he talked too much, played the fame card too much, and creeped out female guests past the point of it being funny
110% with rape ape and RU-AGK on this one. I am young so I only started listening in 97 but like I posted earlier, I just finished listening to the whole 1995 year of shows. To say that 2011 shows are anywhere near the pre-95 shows is just ludicrous. There couldn't be less edginess if they tried. Jackie, Billy West and Howard tearing Robin apart slays me. Now Howard will rag on her for 5 minutes and everyone else is afraid to chime in. At least Artie would give her shit for the coffee enemas etc. I still listen fairly regularly so you can spare the O&A shit NYGator. But you're kidding yourself if you think current shows are better than when Artie was on or especially with Jackie and Billy.
I am not in the business of trying to rate one era against another. I still find the show enjoyable and better than anything else on the radio at this time. That is enough for me.
Listening to yesterday's show right now and absolutely loving how he's ripping apart the stupid fucktard students at PSU.
People actually think jackie is funny?? Granted I've only been listening to the show for about a year but The Jo Cunt is retarded. I always thought it was joke that he was on the show because he WASNT funny.
Jackie sucks. The only thing good about Jackie is when he gets made fun of by Howard, Fred, and Billy West.
Jackie was great. His fights with Andrew Dice Clay were hilarious. I don't have sirius anymore, but whenever I rent a car I listen to Stern. Still funnier than hell. When I had to commute in the mid-90s, I was a daily listener. The first time I heard the joke, "What do you tell a girl with two black eyes..." was by Jackie.
Jackie was amazing when he was on the show and brought a lot of material to the show whether directly or indirectly. he was also the very best at taking on Robin. those uninformed should try searching around for the Jackie Spotlight they did on him a few years back. features some of the best all-time Jackie stuff from fights to Nancy stuff to the jetty to arguments with other comics. also I read that the Nick and Artie show is coming to XM this December which is fucking fantastic news because now Artie can really curse again. it's apparently going to be on 165(Extreme Talk). so glad to see the baby gorilla back and doing well.
classic Stern: Bagging on Fred's wife. Fred and his wife got in a huge fight in the rainbow room led to great conversation. And, the gang busting on Fred for his wife's role in Tony and Tina's Wedding (her role consisted of her making out with some other actor dude the entire time).
couple of months ago they played the dial-a-date episode wherein Fred met his wife Allison and then followed that up with the Rainbow Room incident
I thought Jackie and Artie were a lot alike in that they are pretty awful comedians, but when they have howard facilitating things they could come up with really funny stories and zingers.
is Stern really gonna join America's got Talent...or is all that a made up rumor? I'd start watching if he became a judge.
Howard has rarely done anything outside of the show. He will, however, entertain the notion publicly in order to further promote himself. He's king of all media, you know?
You are the first fan I have ever seen acknowledge that Artie is a shitty comedian. I like Artie, but he is an awful comedian.
I don't like his comedy at all but he's an excellent storyteller and worked perfectly in his role on the show. His book is great for the same reason. I hope he has a chance to publish his second one(he's supposedly writing it). I can't imagine it won't deal with leaving the show and attempting suicide and since Stern is a raging vagina and refuses to even acknowledge anything past Artie still being amongst the living it's the only way we're going to get the story.
I agree with you about Artie, but I thought Stern not mentioning Artie has more to do with his psyche on not wanting to contribute to another relapse. Maybe there is more to it. It would be interesting to know. I would be disappointed if Artie was upset with him, or vice versa.
that's Stern's excuse for the matter. I don't think he truly buys into it but he can say that and not feel bad about not having baby gorilla back. as much therapy as Howard's had he should know that you don't recover from a suicide attempt by just ignoring that it happened. Artie's probably spent hour after hour talking and thinking about what happened and what led up to those events in order to heal his mind. to be frank, considering the pedestal Artie puts Howard and the show on it'd probably be a healing experience for him to be welcomed back in a visit and not written off as persona non grata. now that Artie's new show is being picked up by satellite I think eventually something will be worked out. it may be year(s) down the line but at some point he should be invited back. it'd be riveting radio, almost certainly the most listened to satellite show of all-time.
I guess what I am not getting is why you are saying that Artie is persona non grata. I never got the feeling from Howard, and I also never got that feeling the few times I have listened to Artie speak. I genuinely hope and believe that it is part of his recovery. I can't see Howard being mad at him. As bad a rap as Howard gets, he seems like a genuinely compassionate guy.
