This show made me crave Star Trek again. I just started up a DS9 rewatch. Forgot how intense that first meeting between Sisco and Picard is.

One thing I really dont like about Discovery is how the writers feel like the supporting female characters need to be obnoxious or annoying to be Strong. Tilly, Reno, and Nhan were given some absolutely terrible lines this season. Nhan saying "yum, yum" in the season finale was some Michael Bay-tier shit.

Compare them to Kira and both Dax characters.

Although to be fair Kira is one of the great Star Trek characters imo

Yeah, It isn't really fair to compare someone from Discovery to Kira

I disagree. Star Trek at its core is a progressive show in the strictest sense. It's about how good the future might be. Kira was never reduced to lines like "yum, yum" or "the power of math, people" or "get off my ass." Granted, 90s Trek definitely had something of a Shakespearean vibe in the way the characters talked to each other, because a good chunk of them were stage actors originally, but it's just a disappointment. It's possible to have someone like Tilly be a young Picard (ie mega overachiever, smart, courageous, decisive) without being a dorky Big Bang Theory character.

Kira was essentially a militant revolutionary, but for the most part the writers either showed how hard she was or had other characters talk about it. They didn't do it through cheeky exposition.

I think maybe my criticism gets at the heart of what I don't like about Discovery. In previous Treks, it was all about the mission, with a bunch of people with vastly different backgrounds coming together to get it done. Obviously there are a bunch of episodes about individual characters. I mean, there is an episode about how generations of women in Beverly Crusher's family were seduced by a ghost. However, those things didn't seem to be the core of those characters. Crusher is also a baller who went on a 3 man away mission into Cardassian territory with the assumption that she would probably die or be captured.

I really don't want this to seem like a criticism of women having important jobs in Discovery. For example, I loved Burnham in season one. In season 2 it seemed like she had to bare her soul before she saved the universe like 5 times. It just kind of degrades the characters into action movie stereotypes.

My perspective is also a function of growing up on the 90s Trek shows. Maybe someone would question Janeway, but if the suggestion was denied, Chakotay would be like "aight, you heard the captain."

Since there isn't an individual thread for it, and it's essentially Star Trek, I'm really enjoying The Orville. Just into the 2nd season and all the episodes have been good.

Thought the episode where Bortis is addicted to porn and gives the ship a virus was great.

They're starting to release those little short episode things(short treks).

1st one was 14 minutes long.

    Episode Overview:
Ensign Spock's first day aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise doesn't go as planned when he and Number One are unexpectedly stuck together in a turbo lift.

It sounds like CBS will have two more shows. One is Section 31 and the other is following Captain Pike and the Enterprise on a 5 year mission.

On Monday, CBS All Access announced that Star Trek: Discovery Season Three would premiere on Thursday, October 15th. New episodes of Discovery's 13-episode third season will debut weekly on Thursdays on CBS All Access. After following Commander Burnham into the wormhole in the second season finale, season three of Star Trek: Discovery finds the USS Discovery crew landing in an unknown future far from the home they once knew. Now living in a time filled with uncertainty, the USS Discovery crew, along with some new friends, must work together to restore hope to the Federation.

The premiere of Star Trek: Discovery's third season will come the week after the conclusion of Star Trek: Lower Decks' 10-episode first season. That means fans can look forward to 23 consecutive weeks of new Star Trek content.

I thought season 2 was pretty awful; Picard wasn't that great either. They need to divert some of that CGI budget to getting better writers.

It's great. Didn't know how I'd like the Rick & Morty approach to Trek but it works for me. Tons of Easter eggs in the show too.

I've watched S1 of Harley Quinn and was a big fan. Loved Bane so much. I'll watch S2 as soon as HBO Max and Roku work out a deal.

I just bought all access for soccer reasons. I’ve never seen any Star Trek other than the recent movies, but usually love sci-fi. should I watch this or am I going to miss most of it not having been a trekkie?

It's pretty stand alone. There are some call backs to OG characters and storylines from the original series, but it's more easter egg than anything else. Show is very good and does a better job of following along with traditional sci-fi while blending in action rather than what we saw in the movies which was an action movie with Star Trek characters. If you love Sci-Fi, you really should watch TNG. It's a great show.

I finished episode 2 last night. I love this storyline because I always wanted to see what happened after TNG/DS9/Voyager but it's basically impossible to write stuff that makes sense with how good the technology was at the end of those series.

Past two episodes have been solid. Seems like they're starting to kind of figure it out. Actually feels a bit more like actual Star Trek. I'll be interested in seeing what happens when they finally get to starfleet HQ.

generally i love all mirror universe stuff but the post-federation story is awesome and basically what i've wanted since voyager ended, and now we're sidetracked for at least two episodes on what is essentially some holodeck treknobabble nonsense. mirror georgiou's molecules are out of alignment with the timeline and the universe? and the computer-sphere sensed danger so it showed the crew a cure?
