“Sea nog” is humorous? My bad. It’s tough to keep up with your elastic morality/ethics on whatever today’s thing is.
Chumbolone Your response to me seems like a deflection. You know I’m not asking what it means. I’m asking why you’re saying it in the first place.
for whatever reason I never really followed this thread or the story and only have an extremely basic idea of what happened, looking forward to seeing all that I apparently missed with this doc
Roy asked Chumbolone why he used the term. You said “Because he is a moron shit poster lacking a sense of humor” which correct me if im wrong implies the term was funny when originally used because DHMB wasn’t using it to be funny but to call out the poster who originally used it. DHMB didn’t introduce the term in this thread he used it to (I assume ) call out hypocrisy and irony. I don’t think it was either and that’s why I didn’t write who originally used the term in this thread.
Him using it over and over again is unnecessary and abusing the term itself. No one else is using it. Him spamming the thread with it reveals his lack of sense of humor. I am not defending the term. Read the room.
Chumbolone is a big boi and can defend himself but he used it once and it was at the same time others were doing the same thing (bringing up stupid shit done in the past). The other two times he used it was to address questions or statements it wasn’t to be gratuitous or “spam” the thread. So to answer Roy DHMB used it to call out someone who I think has an issue with for using it. You guys are taking something out of context and turning into something it’s not.
You asked a question that had already been asked and answered, Danny provided an accurate answer so I quoted it. I do not know what else you’re asking.
he came off really well in the doc imo the flashback where Katie Couric asks him if he's gay and he says no and the crowd laughs is some shit you'd never see nowadays
it was always funny to me when people were accusing him of being in on it, the guy is truly a good guy but just very very naive. His life was church and football, that’s it.
I’m surprised that so many people think this is good for his image. Assuming he wasn’t in on it (which appears to be true), he is the dumbest motherfucker out there. And regardless of whether he did or didn’t know, Teo used the story multiple times after he knew that she “wasn’t dead”. Also seems weird he didn’t attempt to go to the “funeral”
the guy didn't go to his dream school because someone made a passing comment to him that he took as a sign from God. Call it naive, dumb, whatever but I doubt he was smart/sinister enough to think he could benefit from the situation he was in at the time. also I feel like I remember the Notre Dame AD crying in his press conference, did that happen or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
We've had shit like this happen on this very site. Dude was probably beyond embarrassed (deservedly so) and was probably just hoping it all went away without anyone knowing
One of the least talked about but most surprising aspects of the whole story is that the girl whose photos were used never heard about it until the story broke. Imagine someone you went to high school with created a fake Facebook account using your personal photos, ran this account for 3+ years, and then the photos from it circulate heavily on national television for an entire football season without you finding out. Just bonkers.
Yeah but he leaned into it.. he brought it up during the heisman presentation. He could have been vague are talk about his grandma, but instead he brought up her knowing she wasn’t dead.
He explained this in the documentary. It would’ve been really awkward if he decided in that moment to deviate from the story before he came up with a long term gameplan on how to message that he knew it wasn’t totally true. I believe he said he found out two days before that she “wasn’t dead”, but still wasn’t totally sure WTF happened until he went home for holiday break and pieced things together with his family and a lawyer. Could he have just danced around the question better in the moment at the Heisman Ceremony? Yeah probably. But it’s not as if there were still votes to be placed, so he wasn’t benefitting in any way at that point.
He is not the first or last person to get catfished. Think about this thing longer than 45 seconds and it's obvious he wasn't in on whatever conspiracy you're suggesting occurred.
Yeah it wasn’t a well known phenomena at that time, which added to the absurdity of it all for people. One of the Sister Wives (that show about Mormon plural marriage) also got catfish’ed soon after this. I’m not sure if there’s a commentary on the LDS Church there.
Doc was good. He's obviously naiive but this really was before we knew that "catfishing" was a thing. As the two Deadspin guys point out here, the real story is the media blowing this thing up with zero research rather than Te'o lying or being an idiot or something. The doc was clearly told from his perspective but makes you feel for him. It's not like he's an asshole or something (and plenty of football players are) - just the butt of the world's jokes for his entire career. Can see why that would want to make someone wish they..... never existed.
I kind of feel like a piece of shit for ever feeling any schadenfreude about this after watching the doc. Him being Mormon makes so much sense. Maybe people made the gay link because almost anyone else in his position would have been out every night doing debauched things with college girls instead of chatting with someone they’ve never met on Facebook.
There was a movie and a TV show named Catfish before Teo. The act was already known as catfishing before him. I'm sure it was know to some but most knew about it prior.
The show was most peoples exposure and started in '12 when this was all going on, people like us knew of catfishing but a lot of the general population first truly heard of it in the Te'o context.
was wondering why this thread was on the first page and got like auditing from a decade ago primer to the doc some of yall need jesus
Yes that is true dblplay1212 you are right. i think I saw a thread on the 3rd page where somebody disagreed with you, you should strap your boots on and try to find that one.
I learned about Catfishing from It’s Always Sunny. I wonder if Amy Coney Barrett was quick to disavow Te’o from Notre Dame when everyone started assuming he was gay. Handmaidens = Good. Gays = Bad.
If you check out early pages of this thread, pretty clear most didn’t know what it was. And this board is a pretty online segment of the population.
Pretty wild the national championship game was a few days after he learned his girlfriend rose from the dead. Ready to put an asterisk next to that championship for Alabama, imo
I saw 2 people that didn't know what Catfish was; some UM guy named Otto and Moxin. Not important, not trying to derail the thread.
