SS United States facing eviction from Philly pier. This ocean liner set the passenger ship record for crossing the Atlantic in 1952 - record still stands. Back story is pretty interesting - saw it on Discovery this weekend. Ship was designed to be converted to a troop carrier if the government needed it. Designer was obsessed with safety, so to prevent fires the only wood items on the ship were the grand piano and one other thing I'm forgetting.
It's really a shame that some sort of non-profit can't get behind it like they do for things like the USS Texas reno. It's a legitimately important part of naval history of the US that no one knows about.
