And that's great, but to mention that as an accomplishment compared to the top teams is odd. "Hey guys we won this thing you were too good to be included in" Especially when you guys went from 7th to 6th in the table and only accomplished one more point. I fully expect Roma to be top 4 this year, but I don't think last season was some triumph. The increased optimism is from a very good market.
but that wasn’t the context. No one was like lol Inter sucks we won the conference league and signed EPL castoffs. The point was that Roma won and Inter choked, which is true even if what they won wasn’t the most prestigious competition.
Same just trying to spur discussion more than anything. I do think Inter's season last year is a little underrated just because they didn't win the title. They had to go through a coaching change and lost their top scorer. Despite that it took Milan being unbeaten for the last 16 games to narrowly win the league
In this context, you’re glossing over ties to Genoa (who got relegated) and Torino (who barely survived not being relegated) towards the end of the season. He wins one of those and they win scudetto. IMO Inter underachieving overshadows Milan’s overachieving Edit: and a loss to Bologna 5 games out from season end.
Milan also drew with Torino (who finished 20 points above the relegation zone) and Salernitana (17th) along with a questionable loss to Spezia at San Siro.
At game time Torino was flirting with relegation territory IIRC. Where they finished the season isn’t relevant to the point being made. Do you think Milan still finishes with the same amount of points if they had Inter’s roster?
In Pioli I trust, we had no business winning with that roster, but just got results. Inter's 84 points does win the league in 2020 and 2021 Also Torino was in 11th when they drew Inter in March and were in the same position when they drew Milan a few weeks later.
Believe Milan went 20 games in a row without a loss to start the season and finished with 16. I don't like the narrative that Inter gave away the league and should've won going away. Milan was excellent and I believe 86 points scored would fall into the top 10 most points scored by an Italian champion ever.
I think the general premise is correct that Milan overachieved last season and Inter under. But Inter finished with 84 points. So how many points did they drop that was so egregious? Are you saying they should've had 6, 7 or 9 more points. If they did accomplish that your talking about one of the greatest teams in Serie A history. 93 points gives them the 3rd highest points achieved in Serie A history for a title winning team. That was the expectations? We're probably putting to much stock in Inter underachieving and more should be put into Milan just playing insane football. Milan was a boarder line top 4 team. I think the betting odds had them 5th in Serie A last year. Last year to me is more about Milan with essentially 10 players just having insane results and pulling wins they had no business doing more so than Inter choking. Also to touch on the bet... I have no problem setting a bet but I want to see the final days of this market play out. We will speak in a couple weeks about where we see things unfolding.
I think its fine for Roma to champion hardware. I don't mind when they say they won a trophy. Just understand that not all trophies are created equal. So when Milan is like we got 7 CL titles and a Newcastle united fan is peacocking over its 30 English championship trophies... foh. No shade to Newcastle fans on this board but on the twitter that fanbase was insane trying to say it was a more historic club than Milan.
Sure. I think any Romanisti who say they're bigger than Milan are being outrageous. But hey, trophy secured.
Yeah I have no problem with lunatic takes and will call them out. But you still get the flowers for winning a recognized trophy that a lot of clubs play for. This isn't some made up piece of shit handed out on a tour of the united states when 80% of the matches feature your youth team as you prep for the season to start.
You're right, those preseason US tour trophies have a longer history But yes Bankz was correct that not all trophies are equal, and with its short history it is probably too early to know exactly where this trophy's true place will be.
I didn’t set a point total for them, but I did mention games that should have been slam dunks that would have won the scudetto. Dropping points to Genoa, Torino, and Bologna towards seasons end when just one of those wins takes the trophy is on brand for Simone. I watched his managerial career as close as any prior to the Inter job so I’m not basing my opinion from last year alone. No qualms in waiting till transfer deadline day to bet, that’s reasonable. Definitely not anytime after though since you said you’re claiming Inter to win the league as things currently stand.
I wonder how the Rabiot deal not going through will affect things as well in terms of funds available
Pretty sure they need to offload both Rabiot and Arthur before making any moves. Did the Man U deal officially get axed?
Wow, a 95th minute OG by Sudtirol bails out another crappy Venezia performance. 3 points closer to coming back up.
My formative years being the 90’s, Lazio was one of the best teams in the league that decade. They were the team I most enjoyed to watch with Crespo, Juan Sebastian Veron, Gascoigne, Vieri, Salas, Nedved, Nesta, Sinisa, etc. The rest of the family being Juventini also played a role because I wanted to have my own team. Chinaglia was also doing soccer broadcasting here in the states.
Not yet but it’s on the bucket list. Goal is to go to games in all the “cool”/major stadiums in the league. Had tickets for Juve/Lecce in March at Allianz and then Covid hit.
I did a tour during a trip to Rome in 2002 but wasn’t into soccer at the time so didn’t really appreciate it fully
Been to Rome twice and never made the trip out to it. With it being outside the city made it somewhat of a hassle and with both times it was out of season so motivation wasn’t there compared to the other stuff to see. It’s dated as shit, how was it in person?
well this was 20 years ago but I thought it was charming and impressive for its borderline antiquity. It fit Rome to me. But again I wasn’t into calcio or anything.
Most of the critiques come from being a fan watching the game standpoint. I love Rome, hence going twice, a good bit with it’s history, aesthetics, landscape, and food. I’d most likely have the same appreciation as you for it
as a Roma fan I understand the downside and need to modernize. But yeah, I’m glad I saw it. Would love to see a match before it’s history.
Sounds like a TMB derby della capitale trip. I had a nice streak of going to Italy every year until Covid hit and haven’t been since. I need any excuse to restart it
Monza not exactly off to a hot start. Berlusconi will have to comfort his sorrows in the Bunga Bunga room
