Like others said it is a cool location. The food is good but overpriced. We stayed in Nob Hill so I thought it unnecessary to go that far to eat.
Some nice hotels there and Union Square. It's good to be near Market for the transit connections. I wouldn't stay in the mission but VRBO and those type of sites might get you a nice loft in SOMA.
I stay at the Intercontinental when I visit SF. Great hotel and great location. The Hilton is also great. You should stay around Union Sq. Easy access to the entire city. Party up on Polk st or head out to N Beach or the Marina. SOMA and Mission are always fun too.
Same general area, good location near Market, just watch out for a few crazies wandering around if you go into the Tenderloin. That said, there are awesome bars in the Tenderloin if you are feeling up for some adventure.
Zero Zero for pizza, it's bomb. Basil Thai is really good and affordable. Lot of good Thai places though Taqueria Cancun is the best burrito in town. The one in the Mission is the best, but there's one at 6th and Market Farmer Brown's, Dottie's, Citzen's Band are all great for brunch Most of those are in Soma though, but Valencia St. in the Mission has a ton of good options
A block or so away, but the cable cars are kind of pointless as efficient transportation. They're a fun experience and great views coming down the hill towards Hyde St pier but long lines and they don't move around that fast. Plus $5/6 per ride or so. Still, give them a go for the experience but don't depend on them for getting around town.
You're not going to be taking BART for getting around the city. If you are going out to the east bay or the airport it's great. To get around the city take muni or uber(and as someone said, maybe take a cable car once just to experience it)
Maybe it was just due to how hungry I was but thought just the simple crab sandwiches they sell on the street at Fisherman's Wharf were fanfuckingtastic along with the bread bowl chowder. Who knows how chock full of salmonilla and other garbage was in the sandwich but I was starving and it was awesome, cheap street food.
Headed out that way on Friday. Will be with my father, who is 70+. Staying at the Drake. Any good food recommendations within walking or short uber? I know I want to head back to the mission for a burrito for lunch one day, but we are wide open for dinner Friday and Saturday night. I got a reservation at Wayfare Tavern for Saturday night, because I really liked it last time I was out there. But I am not married to that idea and am open to suggestions.
Haha if you're at the drake you better go up to Harry Dentons starlight room for the evening shit show that is that place. Wayfare Tavern is awesome. Dayneface tells me Osso is the best steak in the city.
El Farolito and La Taqueria were amazing when I went for burritos. La Taq gets crazy busy so be there around open. After burritos swing into Rosamunde Sausage place for a beer, was awesome sitting on their porch drinking a beer. You're staying in the one area I didn't really get to, so no help on other spots. although I'm still dying to go back to eat at State Bird Provisions, but it's basically a show up and wait type place to get in, reservations near impossible to get, which with a 70+yo may not be the best move
i walked to Brendas French Soul Food in T-loin from Union square once. Great Food and Im glad to be alive
Just looked up the Harry Dentons thing. I was bringing my sport coat regardless, but hot damn I cannot wait to partake in that madness. Noted on Osso. Thanks.
I just realized that I've been there before. Had cocktails before dinner last time I was in town. Hadn't been there after hours however.
Over-rated Lolinda is best steak in the city and there is a great rooftop bar right above it. In the mission though so not close to you. Park Tavern is other good spot and not too far from the Drake. Great food, great drinks. Their b.sprouts are fire
Additionally Lolinda : Fogo de Chao :: Osso : Ruth's Chris imo Can't put South American style joints in the same category as classic steakhouses. You're walking into a totally different beast. (Not that your beast isn't delicious or anything.)
Speaking of South America, SF has some excellent Peruvian joints.Try Limón , La Fusión, or La Mar Cebicheria Peruviana if you want to do something different.
rethinking the Osso reservation. We are booked for Friday night at Wayfare. Looking for a new place for Saturday night, but I am assuming it's going to be a shit show and I will not be able to get reservations anywhere. Any dive bar type recommendations?
My recommendation would be Giordano Bros, and if you want a cool restaraunt outside where the madness is Burma Star, they don't take reservations but the food is awesome + across the street is the Starry Plow is a dive bar u can drink while u wait I also like the Cigar Bar in North Beach, they decent tapas, booze and I enjoy being able to kick back and smoke a nice cigar as well
But I presume you're not hanging out in that area. So essentially you have no plans for where to go? I'd vote North Beach. Enough places where you can grab a quick bite to eat and enough bars to entertain you. Who am I fooling I'd vote Osso then North Beach.
