Figured I would start a catchall thread for anyone wanting to talk about old games. I just got my 3 year old into sports games via Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey. It's perfect for him and he was able to score goals in no time. I may let him run around with Mario 64. I'm not motivated to go buy more N64 stuff...heading to a local retro store. May even get a couple more controllers. I really miss the simplicity of picking up and playing these older consoles. Speaking of which, this can also be a good place to discuss the recent Nintendo Gigaleak where someone leaked codes from old and unreleased games...including Luigi code in Mario 64.
Is it arguable that N64 is the most timeless video game console ever? Just playing these games I still have and they are still legit fun...and not just for nostalgia reasons. When playing NES or SNES or Genesis...those feel more fun for nostalgia reasons but N64 barely feels dated to me if even at all. Because Nintendo has always leveraged a less 'lifelike' art style, the N64 just feels still like anything they could have released at any time. Obviously "sim" sports games aside - but so much of the library holds up over time.
SNES was probably a bigger influence on my gaming upbringing but i can't bring myself to play the games now longer than 10 minutes before the nostalgia kinda wears off. Unless it's something that is just classic like mortal Kombat II. N64 Games are still just as fun.
Have never been able to get into pure RPGs, so I’ve missed so many great games like this. Might have to give it a shot with my kids, since Cheono Trigger is always listed as a Top 50 game of all time.
Im not really into turn based RPGs, but Chrono Trigger is absolutely amazing. Top ten all time game for me.. probably top 5
i grabbed an sp off facebook marketplace the other week to play fire red. the battery was acting up so I replaced it and did a shell swap while I was at it. that 22-year-old rechargeable battery was so swollen i’m surprised it didn’t crack the case. i love this cherry blossom color scheme
Wouldn't mind getting something like this for my kid. I'd rather do 1st party, but availability seems like an issue. Did you look at one of those handheld emulator machines like the anbernic?
it helps that im around Chicago but there were lots of old gameboys on Facebook. i’m on a big physical media kick recently so having the carts is a part of it for me. and luckily people make affordable reproductions of all the expensive/hard to find gameboy games. i was using a side-loaded gba emulator on my iphone but that was a pain in the ass.
i was able to get legit looking carts of fire red, silver, metroid zero mission, golden sun, and mario kart super circuit for less than $100 total off etsy. it’s crazy. i do have retail copies of simpsons road rage, the barbie secret agent/groovy games superpack, and strawberry shortcake summertime adventures that came with the SP. they’re all very bad games
Etsy for retro games? Never would have thought of that. I have my original game boy color that I modded the screen last year. Etsy has modded cartridges?
