Just catching up but I live maybe 20 minutes away in the west hills. Never lived in that area but used to be the head guard at the Raleigh hills outdoor pool during the summers as my job and think Multnomah village is great. PM me anytime when you guys move in, I’ve got 3 little ones and happy to meet up.
Awesome Also it's almost twice as expensive to fly to Atlanta from Portland than Seattle which sucks. My brother and parents aren't excited and almost certainly won't come up after we move so it'll be on us to fly back a couple times a year.
Going to Portland for a day next week. What should I do, where should I eat? Staying in the old town area
Eat at Buranko, and Matsunoki at the Pine Street Market. https://instagram.com/pinestreetmarketpdx?igshid=OGIzYTJhMTRmYQ==
Me and DistantFactor met IRL for a kid's playdate at an indoor play area and had beers at the place , love this city.
Been in Hillsboro/Orenco since Wednesday visiting my hospitalized father. Ready to go home even though I do like the area
STATE cmon now btw still haven't yet done an actual Kann meal, but I've done Sousol a few times and even that is worth it. Gourdet even served me himself the first time I was there.
Just finished spending almost 4 hours here at this huge arcade in Hillsboro. Over 475 games, about half pinball and half arcade. Twenty bucks for all you can play, you can even leave and come back. https://www.nextlevelpinballmuseum.com/
Powered through this whole thread going back almost a decade to get reccs for a trip to Portland in a few days. It’s unfortunate how many of the restaurants from 2016 posts are permanently closed but that’d probably be the case anywhere.
Just had lunch at the Dancing Dragon in Hillsboro. Would not recommend Going back to Pizza Schmizza in Orenco for dinner
Discovered there's a bunch of cool places to eat and a German Beer Hall off Mississippi Ave the other week when I had the evening off from the family.
I’m getting pumped for this. Never been before and it has been a long hot summer. Here’s what I’ve compiled from these 15 pages. Open to thoughts. Andy Ngo lost his lawsuit today against two Super Trooper Antifa Soldiers today, Portland continues to heal.
what is your schedule and what is the objective of the trip? just to see the sights? are you traveling alone? are you fit enough and desire some outdoor hiking and activities? would you have any interest in seeing seattle or any of washington? from portland, a lot of it is just as accessible as central oregon. personally don't think a day in eugene and corvallis is all that interesting, especially outside of a football game. bend/sisters/detroit lake can be nice but that's a pretty far drive for a day trip. definitely think the coast can be a nice day or overnight trip. hood river can be a day. the rest is tougher. your mileage may vary on your walking around the city stuff; i re-read a post you had liked from 2015 and i definitely don't think it's as easy to walk around downtown or the pearl with the homeless. something like: day 1 - portland day 2 - the gorge + hood river meal (hiking and/or winery, or maybe just lunch and exploring in hood river and dinner and a show at edgefield) day 3 - central coast to northern coast (pacific city sand dune "hike" + winery or brewery + overnight in astoria or something) day 4 - neahkahnie mountain hike + northern coast and back to portland day 5 - bend overnight or seattle daytrip or just more portland day 6 - outta here
Thanks, noted on Corvallis and Eugene. Definitely for for hiking, will have my family with me. Objective of the trip is to get outdoors, see some of Portland but much more of the surrounding area, and eat well.
The pioneer square museum is not really worth it but they have some history from this period that is interesting https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissa_Whitman I liked the food truck park too lots of great stuff
Bunch of mountain lion sightings around there recently right? We went to Oswald State Park for our first beach experience after moving a few weeks ago. It was really pretty but what freaked me out was these water line isopods that started biting everyone's feet even in very shallow water
yea I think the mountain lion has been spotted a few different times. I love going down to all the various sports between Seaside and Tillamook.
Also hope to try really going up a trail on Mt Hood in a few weeks when my wife and kid are out of town, like hopefully over a 2000 foot gain in elevation.
steamengine when are you going? I'll be bored out of my mind in Tillamook from 8/19-9/4. There's so actually decent restaurants there.
Unless you're actually staying @ the nines, you can certainly skip Departure (though it's kind of a novel space still) Get into Kann and/or Sousol instead. Clyde common is gone, as is Oba. On the team board we've been talking about Eem a bit - a restaurateur pal of mine loves it fwiw.
Corvallis to Eugene (35 minutes) has like 5 wineries off of HWY99. Either town has a route to the PCH, and if in Eugene, Spencer Butte is the 40 minute hike up to a cutie patootie (no that’s not me) IG pic.
Buddy of mine, who is a bit older with a bunch of kids drove his family out to Oregon coast and through Portland and the gorge before driving back to Nebraska. Small town where I grew up. They are conservative but like wine and the outdoors. They now are convinced they are going to retire in Oregon and completely get why I loved it out there. Will be nice having somebody on my side when I say, ‘yes, I’m glad to be back and see family and friends, no I don’t think Omaha or Nebraska is better outside of the family and friends and cheaper golf.’ Lol
Where specifically do you live? Seems like there's a few of us in the greater Portland area that I still am discovering.
Hood River/White Salmon area is underrated AF. So pretty and not yet overrun -- but it's getting there. They should make the Columbia River Gorge a national park.
I love Hood River. I had a buddy get married in that area a few years ago and it was my first time really spending time there and I fell in love with the area.
And easy access to elite WA hikes that are far from Seattle -- Mt. Adams, St. Helens, Goat Rocks Wilderness. Super close to Mt. Hood. Endless adventure.
not quite Portland area, but have you checked out Newport Beach/Lincoln City ? My in laws retired there and I really enjoy our yearly trip out there
This is an insane amount of driving if you are doing a big loop. Do you need to fly in/out of Portland? Eugene has direct flights to Dallas. I would say the things worth hitting are: -portland for at least 1.5 days -any part of the oregon coast -crater lake With that in mind and if you are set on hitting those sights, heres what I personally would do: -Portland 1.5 days -Drive down the I-5, hit Hwy 22 at Salem and head over to the Central Oregon coast. Its not as ritzy as the north coast, but there will be tons of views and things to do. Sea Lion caves is pretty wild too for newcomers. Thors Well, Heceta Head Lighthouse, Cummings Creek trailhead for some massive goddamn trees, etc. -Head over to Eugene once you hit florence. Check out the scene for a night in town. -Drive Hwy 58 from Eugene to Crater Lake. -Crater lake to Bend -Then either drive back to portland via hwy 97 to hwy 26 past Mt Hood -or- change your flight to fly out of EUG and drive Hwy 242 through the Three Sisters Wilderness Map
Definitely recommend that part of the coast. mc415 turned me on to Local Ocean in Newport and it’s the best seafood spot I’ve ever experienced. Tiny town of Yachats has a cool brewery and some nice little restaurants too. If you want to see some cool sand dune stuff as well you could check that out just south of Florence before making the trip back over towards Eugene.
Local Ocean is fucking amazing. I also love Yachats, we have a house about 8 miles south of there so I know the area very well. There is some great exploring up in the woods in that area.
A house you say? Hello new best friend. You do vacation rentals there? We take the camper up that way a lot but it’s tough in fall/winter when it gets dark early.
