Left my son this morning for a trip. He's almost 4. First time I've left for a trip where he's been able to understand Id be gone. Almost cried leaving. He was sad and kept asking why he wasn't coming with me. :Tebow:
Child having what I can only assume is the 2 year old sleep regression from separation anxiety . Child is screaming bloody murder when put down to sleep: Me: Let her scream it out, she will eventually tire out and go to sleep Wife: You can't let them scream that hard for that long. Goes into room , rocks baby back to sleep, as soon as she leaves baby screams bloody murder again non stop. Wash and repeat. Eventually I convince wife to just let child cry it out until she does indeed get tired and go to sleep Me: Well if you had just done what I said the first time we could have cut about 2 hours of that out. Me: Did not sleep in the marital bed last night (honestly it gets nice and cold upstairs and the upstairs bed is comfy)
Yeah, that line is a bit on an unforced error when exhaustion and baby frustration is present. Gotta tuck it away and say it at the start of the next cry session
a kid that ain't sleeping can rock even the strongest marriages. Gotta bite your tongue and also have a short memory if she snaps at you. both easier said than done.
I have a lot of opinions on the way my wife does stuff, but I bite my tongue, bc if I say anything then she'll just tell me to do it. I may not like the way she's doing it, but she's doing it. Which means I'm not.
OK, who does allowance for your kids? How do you do it? Thinking about starting one for the 10 year old I like the idea of cash like when I was a kid, but wife thinks we need to do a card of some sort. All I see card wise are ones with like a $5 a month fee. Not sure what $60 a year is buying besides the ability to buy stuff online, but seems some say you can't do that with the card. What say the dad brain trust?
I don't like the idea of paying $5 for Go Henry account with the fancy app for kids. Go with your cash idea to start. He can pay you to buy something online. My credit union has a free checking account when they turn 13. Yours may have a lower age requirement.
We used Greenlight. You can load it super easy, and you can even assign chores to them to earn more money. I would say we did the cash thing but all the other kids had a Greenlight so we moved to that which made it a lot easier. DONT ask me now what we do.
13 seems to be the standard lowest age I find I hate the idea of paying monthly, so I told him that fee would reduce his monthly allowance
My wife started giving my 5 year old something like $5 per week for odd jobs because he wants a switch. Got him this little locking safe. He fucking loves counting his money. He also got all of the coins we could find and last weekend got this coin sorter/wrapper kit. This isn't practical at all because I hate cash and never go to a bank, but he's having fun
Hitting the cash back button for $5 at the grocery store or random convience store stop is pretty easy tho
my 2 year old got some coins from her aunt, put them in the literal piggy bank she named "oink oink" and is peeved they don't come back out
First airplane trip without having to bring a pack and play, diapers, a stroller, or a car seat for the plane. What a goddamn delight
Stroller is NBD, plus it helps you cut in line at many places. I can't wait to get rid of the fucking car seat. It's such a massive hassle.
Gotta disagree. Being able to walk on and off the plane without tagging the thing and then waiting for it was a big upgrade to my QOL.
My 3 year old has already flown more and been to more countries than I did in probably the first 25 years of my life
I haven't taken my kid out of the country yet but she's flown probably a dozen times now whereas I didn't fly (minus one little kids "fly days" in a small cessna at a local airport) on a commercial plane until I was in college. Obviously if you have more than one kid on a flight then it's probably 10x as hard.
Actually I find it to be easier with two than one. My secret? Stick the youngest and most difficult kid with my wife.
We flew with all four of ours (1, 3, 5, 7) about three months ago. Wasn't actually as terrible as I thought. Just be prepared with snacks/toys/coloring books. Baby is the only real wild card. Flying solo with my 5 and 7 year old in June - that will feel like vacation comparatively speaking.
Our 3 year old had surgery for a tethered spinal cord this week. Things looked good but he has proceeded to vomit 7 times since last night. They’re trying to determine the cause. It could be anything from (worst case) leaking spinal fluid requiring anesthesia for an MRI and possibly surgery to something as minor as reaction to oxy or body reacting to being constipated. We had been hoping to get out of here Thursday or Friday when we came in but now it’s clearly Saturday at the earliest.
My wife just asked “Want to come upstairs and take a nap?” I loudly replied “If by nap you mean taking your clothes off and grabbing my dick…” I thought my kids were playing outside. They were one room over.
Uncomfortable conversations that I never considered before being a parent: Went to go visit my wife's grandma. Both kids are scared of her. My son looks at me and asks if she's about to die. Right after asking my wife's dad if this is the last time we're going to be able to see her because she's old.
will be thinking of you. I'm a worrier by nature and can't imagine what this would do to me. stay strong brother
The update is that he has stopped vomiting. There was a rash on his back. Unclear if it’s a virus or reaction to a med. But they aren’t worried about spinal fluid leakage because his condition is getting better rather than worse. They moved him out of the ICU (where he had been since surgery, not because of the vomiting) this afternoon.
Same. Going to Europe again here in a couple weeks and it’ll be her second trip overseas visiting multiple countries. She’s 26mo. First time over (5mo) we got the bulkhead and she slept in a bassinet they tethered to the bulkhead wall. It was awesome. This time will be a different beast but we’ve got a pretty good system worked out now. These stokke rollers are a nice pickup if you travel a lot with little ones. Our stroller also fits through the cray machine and can fit in the overhead but we usually gate check.
