There’s a bit in the above review where he brings up a tweet where the guy says “we don’t care what he says we only care about the music” that’s so much of what’s wrong with what hip hop is for this generation. It’s all vibes. Growing up we used to listen to the lyrics and dumb out over witty bars and thoughtful lyrics and now these kids are making all that such an afterthought. There’s still GREAT shit out there but man, this isn’t what it was meant to be
Rap is in a dark place for sure. Agree with you saying that it isn’t all bad, there are always good artists. But mainstream hip hop has been real rough since about the time Kanye started to lose his mind. Read plenty of ppl with worthy opinions expressing concern for the genre
This was really pronounced with the Travis Scott fans losing their minds over Killer Mike winning RAotY. As an old head who took his son to a Travis Scott concert (great time), I see why there’s a massive disconnect.
Yeah this is kinda what’s bummed me out about it lately and made me pay closer attention to what the online fans are saying. There’s genuinely no desire to have these artists say anything of value or anything that even makes sense. I’m by no means against the vibes of it all I’ve always had artists I’ve turned to for that but it seems like this generation is trying to wring all substance from it and that’s just kinda disappointing
I disagree. Art always has “two” different elements across all genres. Hip hop/ rap is no different. There was “meaningful” music but there was also mind candy.
What are you disagreeing with? I never said it was different than what you’re describing I’m just saying the core fan had changed
