and the 8 blown saves is also pretty insane when they built the team around having an awesome bullpen. pretty sure none of us hated the hader signing at the time. i know i didn't
I didn't hate the signing...but also didn't think we needed to spend 20M on a closer at the time when we already had one of the better closers and Bryan Abreu on a cheap deal and hadn't signed any new middle relievers or re-signed Neris, Maton, or Stanek, as well as hadn't seriously pursued an actual CF or considered a depth SP. I also didn't hate the Abreu signing two years ago, but did hate the amount they gave him at age 36 (when he's likely a 2-3 years older than that) and the fact they gave Montero 3 years (when they'd only give Graveman 2) and also gave Montero insane money for a 6th or 7th inning guy.
the montero signing was terrible and i think everyone agreed with that i didn't hate the abreu signing when they made it, but there have been a bunch of advanced stats that have come out since then that show he was on the decline pretty substantially his last year or two in chicago
I would love to see what they saw in abreus numbers that made them think his decline would be any less harsh than yulis
i think crane and bagwell just said abreu is tight and he's available lets get him. really don't think it was more complicated than that
