I hope we become the snitchingest ass organization going forward on other teams. Fuck this was harsh.
And MLB should accept part of the blame. They’re the ones who have allowed this incredibly fucked system to persist. Now we’re the example for what everybody else is doing, albeit on a lesser scale. I was really expecting to lose more like 6-9 and sit out a year on the international market. Instead we’re out two years and 12 fucking prospects. Somebody play some acuna highlights so I can masturbate while I cry.
That's what makes me so upset and can make rooting for sports teams so goddamn hard sometimes. Not like we did anything wrong.
i gotta be honest....having your favorite team skirt sanctions feels a whole helluva lot better than getting hammered
underrated shitty part of this: after effectively lighting $15 million on fire, good luck ever convincing those cheap fucks at liberty media to increase payroll
This is a classic case of a new commissioner trying to show how big his dick by condemning a system where everyone is guilty and everyone looked the other way while they all did this shit discreetly until Coppy got way too cunty and overt about it.
Maybe MLB needs to take a look at the bullshit system they've propped of for years. The Intl market is bullshit. Every fucking team has massive complexes in these shit dirt poor countries....aint for the fucking good of our hearts. It's kinda bullshit if you really think of it.
It really sucks but I'm very happy to keep Pache and Waters. Pache has the highest floor of any of our recent international signees and looks like a star. These next couple drafts become even huger. Really need to hit on a bunch of guys. Have to be productive in two years when we get half of our international budget back as well. Overall we are fine and still have a loaded system. I'm just afraid of having a talent gap in a couple years.
Not that Coppy would have ever been able to get another job again, nor should he, but a lifetime ban is fucking hilarious from an organization that has turned a blind eye to all of its scandals for decades. Gondee on twitter basically saying we won't develop any international talent for five years as a result of this punishment. Hadn't thought of it in those terms but... god damn. I guess it's time to compete now because our future is already drying up.
He's being a bit dramatic. We are absolutey fucked for one year. But 2018 we can sign guys up to 300k. 2020 we'll have half our bonus pool to do whatever we want with. Acuna signed for 100k, Ozzie for 350. Scouting becomes incredibly important.
I understand his point, but we’ve still got some dudes. Keeping Pache was a must, same with Contreras. And they didn’t take all our 2016 guys. Jeffrey Ramos, Braulio Vasquez and Jean Carlos Encarnacion are all good players. Going to have to scout our balls off the next two years and find some hidden gems. Much like we’ve done in trading for guys we liked but didn’t get in previous drafts (Touki, Alex Jackson) need to do that with international guys like we like as well. I think the toughest part is going to be hiring quality international scouts and higher ups given the restrictions placed on them for the next few years.
Law.. MLB made 13 Atlanta minor leaguers, all signed in the 2016-17 period, free agents, with the most notable name among them Kevin Maitan, signed for $4.25 million on July 2nd, 2016. (I'm using the publicly reported bonus amounts for players here, although the MLB investigation found that the freed players received additional, unreported money too.)Maitan was my No. 59 prospect overall coming into 2017, but pro scouts were not impressed by what they saw from the 17-year-old shortstop, particularly in his swing, which has become long and noisy, with serious timing problems that will give him real trouble making contact until it's cleaned up. His body did fill out more than you'd like, but there was never a chance he'd stay at shortstop anyway, and he could still work himself into a solid defensive third baseman. I've also heard plenty of negative comments on his work ethic. He's also the same age as a U.S. high school junior or senior, and is young enough to grow up and improve his conditioning as well. The swing change, however, is the bigger concern. The rest of the package of prospects is a mixed bag, as many of these players seem to have lost asset value (meaning how the industry perceived them) since signing. Catcher Abrahan Gutierrez, signed for $3.53 million, is a good catch-and-throw guy with big questions around the bat. Infielder Yunior Severino, signed for $1.9 million, has some tools at the plate, with the potential to hit and show power, but he’s a bad defender at second and may not have a position. Shortstop Livan Soto, signed for $1 million, can play short but has no power and may not even have the strength to hit. Right-hander Yefri del Rosario, signed for $1 million, is the most intriguing arm of the group, an arm strength guy with athleticism but below-average secondary stuff. These are all good inventory guys for short-season clubs, and are all so young that there remains both high variance and big potential with each of them, with a good chance few or none of them ends up making any major league impact.
Yeah, that's extremely dramatic. Tough penalty, but not organization crippling. Still have tons of prospects who, if they pan out, will bridge any temporary gap in talent that occurs until we start developing that next wave. Ready to move forward with Greek Jesus at the helm.
So basically just 4 years of no International signings. For comparison how many Astros from their current squad were International signings? Or has that market heated up more in recent years?
No, really only 1 year. 2019. 2018 we have the normal 300k limit for going over previously. 2020 we have half of our budget.
McCann - FA Gattis- Trade Springer - 1st round Altuve - Undrafted free agent Correa - 1st round Bregman - 1st round Marwin - Rule 5 (IFA in 2005) Gurriel - Cuban defector, FA Reddick - FA Maybin - Waivers Fisher - 1st round Beltran - FA Verlander - trade Kuechel - 7th round McCullers - 1st round Morton - FA
So this probably impacts us the most in 2020-2025, right? That's when those international prospects from the Maitan class and the ones we are about to be limited in would be reaching the big leagues. I wonder how we compensate for this. The draft will essentially be our only way to accumulate talent, and that's not sustainable to compete at a high level. It also feels like it's now even more important for AA to handle service time properly over the next few years.
This hurts but will really only hurt us truly badly if Liberty refuses to pony up extra money we need in FA to get some guys to compensate. Which they will.
Per Ben Badler the lost prospects can re-sign with Atlanta, but not until May. Not going to happen though.
How long until we know if anyone is claimed in the Rule 5 draft? Did we essentially grab 2 from the rule 5 draft in favor of Peterson and Demeritte, or am I understanding this wrong? Am I seeing this right? Touki Toussaint 8.2 IP, 7 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 7 BB, 14 K That's an ERA of just over 10, right? It's confusing because it's followed by positive commentary.
We are betting that no one would try and carry those two dudes for an entire season. It's way harder to carry a hitter than a pitcher.
If you were Alex Anthopolous, how would you approach next season? The young position player core is starting to come together, but it's hard to tell what any of the young SPs will give you next year. Dave Cameron The Braves need to do what the Brewers have done so well; find interesting role player types who might have some upside. Grab a bunch of +1 WAR big leaguers and then try to turn them into more than that. Travis Shaw/Chase Anderson types. What is your take on how the Braves OF shakes out? Dave Cameron I wouldn't be shocked if they just cut Kemp in spring training. AA isn't the guy who traded for him, so easier for him to just say "not my guy"
