Grace is a bit of a nutjob, so I’d take that middle one with a grain of salt. But something does feel off here
How the hell does HBO get out of the streaming game and go back to cable and think that’s somehow the way to go? It’s the best one but I sure as shit ain’t getting cable to watch it. I’ll just download it for free.
And Discovery+ has a catalog that only depressed housewives could enjoy so I'm sure as fuck not subscribing to that.
Looks like quite a few people are picking up on it. If true, it's such a terrible decision. I've bought back to back annual subscriptions with HBO Max because it had good scripted content. I don't want unscripted BS from Discovery.
So like… am I going to be able to stream a new season of Curb? Or watch John Oliver at my own leisure? Or will I have to watch it live
I’m sure they will still have the hbo app where you can do that, but you’ll need a cable subscription I’m guessing. But we’ll lose all the amazing hbo max shows that popped up over the last couple of years which sucks
What the fuck? Why must they change this shit like every 5 years? HBO Go, HBO now, HBO max, discovery+??? Just fucking leave it alone Jesus Christ
I think the idea is to keep HBO original programming on the app but take away the original content for HBO Max
I never quite understood the difference between HBO and HBO max but if they cut a bunch of really great shows so chip and Joanna can make another billion I'm going to be very upset and do nothing about it.
Same. I haven't had HBO on cable/satellite in years, but HBO max was apparently both the streaming service and a production company within HBO that I didn't really consider different. I've gathered that HBO produced big shows like House of Dragon, Barry, and Mare of Easttown, and HBO max produced shows with a smaller budget. And now Warner/Discovery wants more reality tv shit. New guy in charge of a billion dollar operation, wants to make sweeping changes to show off how brilliant he is.
Sure, we have the best streaming service. But making quality content is expensive. What if we got leaner and produced more content that sucks but at volume. Worked for Netflix.
Most "Max Originals" weren't stuff I was really interested in but Station Eleven and The Staircase were really good mini-series.
As someone who doesn't have and can't really afford cable I'll be bummed if I lose access to The Sopranos, The Wire, Generation Kill, etc
"streaming focused on unscripted" is code for, "a bunch of cheap-to-produce shit" you're a sucker if you don't cancel
they aren't gonna get rid of HBO as a streaming platform what they are essentially saying is that these produced for streaming shows & movies cost way too much for the return (ie not as many subs as they expect) so they'll cut back on those and keep producing the reality stuff bc it's way cheaper so you'll still be able to watch everything HBO related on a streaming service
overall I get that it sucks, but using Netflix as an example I cannot understand how they burn through as much money they do with all these shit tier movies they keep making, eventually that balance sheet catches up to you granted HBO has a way higher hit rate, but there is still a good amount of direct to hbo max stuff that isn't all that great
Peacemaker is safe according to Gunn. It will probably just be released directly to HBO cable instead of a big premier on HBOMax. The ROI on all these made exclusively for HBOMAX wasn’t high enough with new subs.
I think Netflix said recently that volume won't be their model going forward, rather they'll take the savings and invest more in the projects they do make.
I saw a meme that said The Gray Man cost more to make than Dune. if I'm Netflix, fixing that kind of shit would be my first point of emphasis.
I don't need any of the movies from HBOMAX or Netflix. Save the money and just make good TV shows, miniseries, and documentaries. It isn't that difficult to figure out what things would be easy to cut.
So HBO Max includes Warner movies that were theatrical releases but not HBO/HBO Max movies. Will these movies no longer be on some Warner/Discovery streaming service?
Streaming bubble might be popping within the next 5-10 years. Netflix lost a few million subscribers, Warner Discovery couldn't even make money off their streaming properties, etc.
They even removing shows that were HBO originals now. Not HBO Max originals, but HBO originals. It's quickly escalating to the point where you have to ask yourself WTF is even the point in subscribing anymore? https://tvline.com/2022/08/04/hbo-max-removed-tv-shows-vinyl-camping-mrs-fletcher/ Think when my gift subscription or gift card or whatever it was I got to pay for it runs out I'm done with it. I'll just pirate the HBO content I want to watch.
So I’m gonna unsubscribe? Am I going to have to go to discovery to watch HBO originals? Or will I have to go some HBO thing?
Just started watching Primal yesterday. The current season 2 is in progress on Cartoon Network but HBO Max is streaming as well. By Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Lab, Clone Wars), it’s hyper violent and with no dialogue. But it’s a story of a human and Dinosaur working together to stay alive in prehistoric and magical times. One of the best cartoons I’ve seen. The action sequences are unparalleled.
The Gray Man was alright and much better than the shit movies Netflix usually makes. No idea how it cost $200m to make other than the actors getting paid a ton. Hell, I think the Irishman cost as much as Dune, cause they spent so much money making De Niro and the rest of the cast “look” like a 30 year olds.
